BT CaresBT Cares Says Thank YOU!

Thank you to everyone who donated clothing to the Wolfe

Street Academy Clothing Drive.

We were able to fill more than 30 boxes

of clothing that got distributed to families in need.

Thank you to our BT Puppeteers group, led by Anita Knisbacher, who performed Chanukah puppet shows at local nursing homes during the holiday. The residents at Brightview, Emeritus, Springhouse, Sunrise, and Weinberg Park were thrilled to welcome us into their facilities for these special moments.

Thank you to everyone who continues to make a difference by sending in HELP lunches, to our High School TOGA students who make the sandwiches, and to Rachel Goodman and Cheryl King for delivering the lunches to Beans & Bread.

Thank you to Hennie Laifer, Sheri Seaman, Alicia Broth and everyone from the PreSchool and Lower School who donated toys that were given to the Jewish Caring Network so children at Gevuras Yarden were able to celebrate Chanukah with gifts.

Thank you to the families who brought toys with them to Chanukah Bingo that were donated to the children at Hackerman Patz House. You helped brightened up their holidays and made them feel special.

Thank you to everyone who donated clothing during the BT Cares and Sisterhood Men’s Clothing Drive! Your donations were given to men in need at Helping Up Mission, Beans & Bread, and Paul’s Place. Due to your generosity, these men will be able to stay warm during the cold months.

Thank you to everyone who dropped off home-baked desserts to Mercaz for the children in the after school program at Paul’s Place. They sincerely appreciate your generosity and delicious treats and look forward to getting them again in February.

Thank you to everyone who donated gloves to the Community Mitzvah Day Glove Collection. We were able to collect more than 1,800 pair of gloves to donate to winter survival kits that were given to the homeless. In addition, we were able to color more than 300 mitzvah cards that were used during Mitzvah Day, with great thanks to Lower School early drop-off students and students in BT Plus. Also, a huge thank you to everyone who volunteered at Community Mitzvah Day.

Under the leadership of Alicia Broth and Sheri Seaman, Beth Tfiloh served as a Mitzvah Room partner by hosting a table where we made stress balls for patients with Dementia. What a difference we made in the lives of so many!

Willie & Sophie Mazer remembered at annual Chanukah Luncheon

Members of the BT Synagogue Staff enjoyed memories of Willie and Sophie Mazer (z”l) at the Annual Chanukah Luncheon, conceived and endowed by the Mazers.

Willie's ties to Beth Tfiloh go back to his childhood when he attended Beth Tfiloh with his father. As an adult Willie continued to be an active member of the synagogue and Brotherhood as well as serving as an accountant for the Congregation. Beginning in 1999, the Mazers hosted the first Chanukah luncheon. Sophie served the soup, and Willie entertained attendees with stories about the “old days” when there were only three people in the administrative offices, one rabbi, and handwritten ledger books. After Sophie passed away in 2003, Willie and his daughter Roslyn and son-in-law David Holzworth, continued this tradition.

With Willie's passing last year, Roslyn and David have continued to personally host this annual Chanukah luncheon. The BT staff valued the opportunity to remember Willie and Sophie's love and commitment to Beth Tfiloh, while enjoying a much-deserved break from their dedicated service to the Congregation.

Holiday packages are a big hit with the college crowd

Over 100 college students were treated to a Chanukah care package compliments of the Beth Tfiloh Brotherhood. The packages, which are coordinated by the BT Youth Center and packed by parent volunteers, included a menorah and candles, a dreidel, chocolate gelt, Chanukah decorations, and recent sermons and articles from Rabbi Wohlberg.

Steven Grutman '15 said his Chanukah package “really made my day.” Stephanie Kronthal described how she “Facetimed” with her sons Bradley and Spencer on the first night of Chanukah to light candles and enjoyed seeing them light the menorah in their apartment window. “The packages are really appreciated as most of the kids would not have what is needed for Chanukah at college,” she added.

Beth Tfiloh sends two holiday packages each year to college students who are alumni of the day school, or who are children of synagogue members. If you haven't already

submitted your child's name and address, you can still do so in time for the Pesach package by emailing Cherie Brownstein at [email protected] by January 31st.

ISRAEL SOLIDARITY - Mrs. Zipora Schorr led Beth Tfiloh students in the singing of Hatikva as part of a webcast with 22 other day schools in the U.S. and Canada to show solidarity for Israel.

BT tops Israel Bonds High Holy Day Appeal in Baltimore and beyond

When it comes to Israel there is no question that Beth Tfiloh Congregation has earned a reputation as one of the most passionately Zionistic and supportive synagogues. Anywhere. And so it will come as no surprise that for the 2015 High Holy Day Israel Bonds Appeal, the members of Beth Tfiloh Congregation purchased not only the most Israel bonds of any synagogue in the Baltimore metro area, but the most bonds of any congregation in the U.S.

Alan Dorenfeld, Executive Director of the State of Maryland Israel Bonds office agrees that Beth Tfiloh has had a tremendous impact on the success of Israel Bonds in the Baltimore area, which yielded the highest High Holy Day Appeal of any region in the country, both in the number of cards returned and the dollar value of bonds purchased. “Beth Tfiloh leads our community in High Holy Day responsiveness. There is no question,” says Alan. He pointed out that the $3.4 million in Israel Bonds purchased by Beth Tfiloh members this fall (breaking all previous records set by Beth Tfiloh) comprises 30 percent of the $11 million from tab cards in the region consisting of 26 synagogues.

Many believe that Beth Tfiloh’s exemplary support for Israel Bonds and other Israel causes stems from its strong rabbinic leadership from Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg over the past 38 years. Others will credit the many Beth Tfiloh members who have taken a leadership position in Israel Bonds.

Every one of Beth Tfiloh’s 874 bond purchasers should take great pride in the impact they are making by investing in our Jewish homeland through Israel Bonds.

“Beth Tfiloh leads our community in High Holy Day responsiveness. There is no question.”

School News

“When I was little, I used to play teacher and make fake attendance books,” shares Ms. Rachel Levitt-Klein, Beth Tfiloh Dahan High School’s Director of Student Life and Israel Guidance. That’s not just playing pretend – that is a commitment to a lifelong goal. There was a brief period in high school when she entertained the notion of joining the circus, until she discovered the incompatibility between circus life and being Shomer Shabbat (“I still have the application to clown college!”). From then on, her career trajectory progressed through the educational field by way of Yeshiva University where she earned both a Bachelor’s degree in Jewish/Judaic Studies and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Administration. Her path since then has included serving as a teacher, as a programming leader and as a school administrator…all preparing her for her current role at BT.

“I don’t teach subjects, I teach people,” says Ms. Levitt-Klein of her philosophy behind her multi-faceted role. “One of the most fun, challenging parts of my job is getting to know each person, how they learn best, and how to help them become better in the areas in which they need to grow.”

Now in her second year as a member of the BT faculty, Ms. Levitt-Klein devotes her limitless supply of energy, enthusiasm and creativity to helping students cultivate their leadership skills by developing and implementing programs for their peers. “Student life is the place in which I see the integration

stepping into greatness as individuals and as a class; and Seniors are developing independence and preparing to be involved Jews in the world beyond BT. As Director of Israel Guidance, she helps students and their families navigate the process of deciding whether to spend a gap year in Israel, and if so, to find the program that is the right fit for them. And if that isn’t enough, she also teaches Bible classes, “because Hashem is great,” her famous catchphrase.

“As my Jewish Leadership teacher, Ms. Levitt-Klein not only teaches us information but connects with us and understands each of us — not just as students but as people,” shares Rebecca G. ‘16. “She relates the teachings to our everyday lives and instructs the class in a way that makes it feel like a place where we come to learn while thoroughly enjoying ourselves.”

Yitzi T. ‘16, Student Government’s Commissioner of Spirit, is also a big fan. “Mrs. L-K is incredible, she really goes out of her way to make sure the students of Beth Tfiloh love school.”

“BT is a really special place,” notes Ms. Levitt-Klein. “It’s a great place to work, a great community to be a part of. This school actually is everything it says it is on paper. It’s a really special place.”

CHUMASH PROGRAM 2nd Grade students received their first Chumashim (Hebrew Bibles) in a beautiful program generously sponsored by Deborah and Searle Mitnick.

Focus on Philanthropy

The Sachs family’s relationship with Beth Tfiloh spans four generations, making their family history intertwined with BT’s, so it’s only fitting that their philanthropic generosity is ensuring BT’s future. Alvin Sachs was “born in BT,” as his parents were married by Rabbi Samuel Rosenblatt in 1928. He and Marcia were also married at BT, as were their son Michael and daughter Ellen. In fact, all the Sachs family life cycle events have taken place at BT, “and we hope that will continue for many years.”

To ensure that trend continues, Marcia and Alvin have left substantial legacy gifts to Beth Tfiloh through the Chazak Campaign. “We had already left a nice gift in our will, but decided that a major gift both now and in our estate, along with a dedication ceremony that our children and grandchildren could experience with us, will solidify for them our belief in BT and hopefully they will continue to do the same,” says Alvin.

Alvin and Marcia dedicated the Synagogue’s business office, where Marcia spends “countless hours” as one of three members of the High Holiday seating committee. “Some while ago, my friend Sandy Dobres volunteered to join the seating committee and I, along with Helen Gordon, became the seating committee,” shares Marcia. “We worked long and hard to place the BT members with their families and we still serve on that committee today!”

She notes that once Beth Jacob merged with BT, the task of placing everyone in comparable seats was “enormous,” but that they welcomed the new Beth Jacob members with open arms. Additionally, being long-time business people with an understanding of finance, the business office seemed a natural choice for their dedication.

Alvin and Marcia have a long history of involvement and generosity at both local and national organizations. Beyond Beth Tfiloh, their beneficiaries include the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF), AIPAC, The Associated, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society and the Baltimore Child Abuse Center. This involvement demonstrates to their children and grandchildren their commitment to helping the community and to sustaining traditional Jewish values, because “nothing is more important than their being Jewish and continuing our dedication and involvement with BT,” says Alvin.

And their children are paying close attention. “My parents have instilled generosity in our family, which we

are hoping carries on to generations to come,” comments daughter Ellen Shevrin, who considers Beth Tfiloh like a family and home for her family. “They are a fabulous example for us and our children. We love being active at BT,” she notes, adding that she has served on the School’s Parent Association for many years in a variety of roles, including chairing the annual Mishloach Manot program, Yad B’Yad’s Mitzvah Miles fundraiser, and this year’s Spirit of Shabbat Chanukah Dinner.

Their youngest son, Greg, sees his parents’ involvement at BT as both a testament to and manifestation of their commitment to Jewish values, which they have passed on to their children and grandchildren. “Between involvement at Beth Tfiloh at every level of our lives — school, camp, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, weddings, holidays, charity — and their unwavering support for Israel, Jewish values were part of our lives from our youngest memories,” says Greg.

“Our parents have taught us that the reward is in giving and the intrinsic value far outweighs any monetary costs,”

says their son Michael, who, along with his wife, Jen, have followed their parents’ examples, both philanthropically and as communal leaders. Jen is the Baltimore Child Abuse Center’s board president, where she gives her time to help children and families begin recovery from abuse, as well as serving on Jemicy School’s Parents’ Association executive board. Besides serving on several boards at Beth Tfiloh, Michael is also a trustee at Jemicy School and an avid fundraiser for

SAVE THE DATE:Third Annual Dahan Memorial Lecture: Natan SharanskySunday, March 20

No one has been more passionate about securing the continuity of Jewish education to both children and adults than Beth Tfiloh’s most generous benefactor, Haron Dahan, of blessed memory, and his beloved Rachel, of blessed memory. To help perpetuate all that the Dahans have stood for, an Annual Dahan Memorial Lecture takes place every spring.

Baltimore Child Abuse Center.

“Initially I took the leadership role as Chair of the Beth Tfiloh Camp Committee to support Beth Tfiloh Camp,” notes Michael. “Subsequently, it has been rewarding to use my business acumen to better the institution. I feel that integrating all aspects of Beth Tfiloh—the Synagogue, Camp and School will provide for a better future for our children’s generation.”

Michael and Jen have expressed their deep commitment to Beth Tfiloh with a gift to Camp through the Chazak Campaign. “To me, it is very important that Jewish children connect with the outdoors and nature in a positive and meaningful way,” shares Michael, who attended BT Camps as a child. “I fondly remember collecting critters and walking up streams in the woods and I remember playing all kinds of sports.” Additionally, their own sons, Matthew, Bennie and Zachary, are big BT Camps fans themselves.

Jennifer and Michael have made several gifts to the camp including the nature center, the ropes course and most recently the lake and slide. “We dedicated the ropes course to provide children with team-building opportunities and to build a giant swing set that is just fun to climb,” explains Michael. They chose the nature center, which is one of Zachary’s favorite parts of camp, because of their strong personal dedication to and love of nature education, and the lake and slide “because there was a need for improving it—we are blessed with having the ability to meet a need and to give to the community that we care so much about.”

Both generations of the Sachs family have created a strong legacy of involvement and generosity that benefits the entire BT community. But it’s their family’s future that is their inspiration: “We want our children to be philanthropic, kind-hearted, hard-working, successful and generous.”
