School News

Dr. Renee Koplon has been appointed Principal of the Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community High School.

Dr. Koplon holds degrees in mathematics from Barnard College, Columbia University and Rutgers University. She comes to Beth Tfiloh with a wealth of experience, most recently having served as Assistant Dean at the Ramaz School in New York City, where she spent seventeen years of her professional life in various positions. “Dr. Koplon has been described as approachable and sensitive, intelligent and insightful, dedicated and professional,” says Mrs. Zipora Schorr, Director of Education. “We

look forward to introducing her to the BT school community in the coming months.”

Mrs. Schorr expressed gratitude and admiration to the Interim High School Principal, Mrs. Deborah Rapoport, “for the extraordinary job she has done and continues to do in leading the High School so ably.” Mrs.

Alumni NewsBT Alumni: Eat, Pray and Give Together

February was a busy month for BT alumni, with BT grads living in New York or studying at University of Maryland, College Park reuniting with friends and school faculty! Talia’s Steakhouse on the Upper West Side was completely packed with alums of all graduation years who enjoyed catching up with Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg, Mrs. Zipora Schorr, Rabbi Yehuda Oratz, and Mrs. Cherie Brownstein. Ari Lesser ’07 shared why he supports the Alumni Campaign, which inspired nearly 100 percent of the reunion attendees to make their own campaign gifts. It was a beautiful evening full of laughs, mingling, and delicious food.

Down in College Park, the UMD Hillel hosted alums for the annual BT reunion. Our graduates were excited to hang out and enjoy Chinese food from David Chu’s while catching up with Rabbi Oratz and Morah Sara Lanner. Mrs. Schorr and Rabbi Jonathan Gross also attended the event, where Mrs. Schorr schmoozed with her “kids,” updating them on all the latest BT news.

“Warrior Day” took place on February 24th and inspired Alumni to show their Warrior Pride by making gifts to the Alumni Campaign. Their generosity helps to sustain BT’s competitive athletics program and creative arts program, as well as supporting the scholarship fund which enables nearly 50 percent of our students to benefit from a BT education. Thank you to all the alumni who participated. Congratulations to Cheryl Pruce '04 and Spencer Kronthal ‘14, winners of the ticket raffle for SPOTLIGHT 2016 Celebrates Israel with The Idan Raichel Project!

It’s not too late to show your Warrior Pride. Donate online at bethtfiloh.com/

At BT, Jews from all backgrounds join together in a joyous and supportive Jewish community. While the BT family includes a wide range of Jewish traditions, one of the key values that unites and defines our community is our love and support for Israel. And so it is fitting that this year’s SPOTLIGHT Scholarship Event will be a celebration of Israel, featuring Israel’s top musical group, The Idan Raichel Project.

Supporting Israel, like supporting BT, is part of Spotlight 2016 honorees Tova and Rony Natanzons’ core values. As Rony says, “Israel is our life insurance policy. It’s there for us, for our children, and for generations to come.” Beth Tfiloh is

a guarantor of that policy. By instilling a love of Israel – its sacred sites, its breathtaking landscapes, its eclectic and diverse people—BT ensures that our children’s commitment to Israel is a core part of their Jewish identity.

Just as Israel is the Jewish people’s insurance policy, the SPOTLIGHT annual scholarship event is our students’ safety net. The Scholarship Fund enables 50 percent of our students to benefit from a Beth Tfiloh education, providing them with the academic, social/emotional and spiritual foundation they need to be successful, proud, committed Jews on college campuses and beyond. At this year’s SPOTLIGHT annual scholarship event, the Beth Tfiloh family will once again unite in its support of our School and of Israel, while singing and dancing to the acclaimed music of The Idan Raichel Project. The Idan Raichel Project is a microcosm of Israeli society, comprised of Jews from all backgrounds – Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Ethiopian, Mizrachi. Their voices blend in perfect harmony, weaving elements of each culture’s traditions and history into an enchanting musical tapestry, one that

Dahan Lecture: A Night to RememberNatan Sharansky gave a riveting retrospective on his years in the former Soviet Union, together with his compelling analysis of the major challenges facing the Jewish community in the U.S., Europe, and Israel. Over 1,000 attendees were moved by Mr. Sharansky’s historic role in freeing Soviet Jewry and inspired by his dedication to Israel and world Jewry. The evening was a fitting tribute to the legacy of Haron and Rachel Dahan.

AT BT IN 1986 - Natan Sharansky spoke to the first class of Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community High School shortly after his release from a Soviet prison in 1986.

30 YEARS LATER - Mrs. Zipora Schorr introduces Natan Sharansky to Daniel B. ‘17, a member of the BT High School Student Government and AIPAC Delegation.

SALE OF CHAMETZ AUTHORIZATION FORM(Please return to the Synagogue Office)

I _________________________________________________________ residing at the following locations:

_______________________________________________

_______________________________________________

_______________________________________________

do hereby fully authorize Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg to act as my agent for the sale of all Chametz in my possession, whether according to Biblical or Rabbinic law or accepted Jewish custom.

____________________________________________ ____________________ Signature Dated

SELLING YOUR CHAMETZBecause the Rabbis realized that disposing of Chametz completely would

involve a considerable financial hardship for many, they devised a process whereby a Jew could sell his or her Chametz to a non-Jew before Pesach and repurchase it after the conclusion of the holiday.

This sale has been structured so that the non-Jew will find it in his or her best interests to resell the Chametz after Pesach. Because this sale involves many technicalities, it has been traditional for the Rabbi of the congregation to act as the agent for those who sell their Chametz.

Everyone who prepares his or her home for Pesach should arrange with the Rabbi to sell their Chametz. This is effectuated by signing a Statement of Authorization (Shtar Harsha’ah), which may be done anytime prior to mid-morning on Friday, April 22.

The authorization form below meets the Halachic requirements and should be delivered to the Congregation Office in order that Rabbi Wohlberg may receive it prior to Friday, April 22. If you own Chametz in several places, such as your home and a vacation home, include all of the addresses.

It is customary to make a contribution in connection with the selling of Chametz. Please make your check payable to the “Beth Tfiloh Charity Fund” to assist the many needy individuals in the Baltimore area who will not be able to properly observe the Passover holiday without some financial assistance. Your generosity will be most appreciated.

REMINDER - Please wait a brief period after the end of Passover before using your Chametz in order for Rabbi Wohlberg to have sufficient time to repurchase it on your behalf.

Use our online form at www.bethtfiloh.com/pesach or complete the form below.

BT SEDER EXCHANGE: ISO Seder hosts and guests

The Seder is one of the most beautiful Jewish home rituals, filled with the many festive symbols and sounds of the Passover holiday, and the Mitzvah of retelling the exodus from Egypt.Unfortunately, there are many people in our community who will not experience a Seder in its fullness simply because they have not been extended an invitation. These individuals may be college students, recent immigrants, newcomers to the area, those unable to travel to be with relatives, or otherwise unable to make a Seder for themselves.

If you or someone you know would like to be either a Seder host or a Seder guest, please call the BT Pesach Hotline at 410-413-2244 or email [email protected], and we will be happy to make a “Seder match” for you.

Rabbi Gross publishes new book about Warren Buffett

Rabbi Jonathan Gross has published a new book, “Values Investing: An Omaha Rabbi Learns Torah from Warren Buffett,” which serves as a commentary to the legendary investor’s values through the lens of Jewish texts and tradition. Rabbi Gross has studied the work and teachings of Warren Buffet, and shares in his book the many lessons they provide about morality, ethics, and character development that are consistent with Torah values.

The book is available for purchase at www.lulu.com/spotlight/BuffettTorah.
