Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist Joins BMC Medical Staff

Berkshire Health Systems announces the appointment of Kyle Chambers, MD, an Otolaryngologist and Head and Neck surgeon to the medical staff of Berkshire Medical

Center and the physician staff of Berkshire ENT & Audiological Associates, PC. Dr. Chambers is accepting new patients in need of ear, nose and throat care and joins John Loiodice, MD, at Berkshire ENT & Audiological Associates.

Dr. Chambers specializes in medical and surgical care of conditions of the ears, nose, throat, sinuses and upper aerodigestive system for adult and pediatric patients.

He received his medical degree, with honors, from the University of Washington, Seattle, and completed his residency in Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery through Harvard Medical School in a combined training program at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Massachusetts General Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Chambers also received additional training in the diagnosis and treatment of allergies.

For an appointment with Dr. Chambers, ask your physician for a referral or call Berkshire ENT & Audiological Associates, PC, at 413-448-8291 in Pittsfield or 413-664-5484 in North Adams.

Berkshire Health Systems announces the appointment of Jason Bratcher, MD, a board certified and fellowship trained Gastroenterologist, to the medical staff of Berkshire Medical

Center and the physician staff of Gastroenterology Professional Services of BMC. Dr. Bratcher, who came to the Berkshires from a New York City practice, is accepting new patients in need of comprehensive Gastroenterology care. He is partnered with Jeffrey St. John, MD, Rangan Murali, MD, and Richard Woller, PA, at Gastroenterology Professional Services of BMC.

Dr. Bratcher specializes in the use of Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS), an advanced, minimally-invasive technology that allows for the examination of deeper tissue layers of the upper and lower gastrointestinal (GI) tracts. The upper GI tract consists of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum; the lower GI tract includes the colon and rectum. EUS allows for the evaluation of tissue and organs that are not visible with traditional endoscopy, such as the liver, biliary tree and pancreas. During the EUS procedure, fine needle aspiration (FNA) can be performed to assist in the diagnosis and staging of various GI malignancies, including esophageal, stomach and pancreatic cancers. He also is trained in ERCP, a technique that allows for treatment of hepatobiliary disorders that can cause blockage of the biliary tree, liver and pancreas. EUS and ERCP are oftentimes used in conjunction for complicated GI disorders.

Dr. Bratcher most recently worked in a private Gastroenterology practice in New York, with Jerome Siegel, MD, a pioneer in the development of ERCP. He was affiliated the Center for Digestive Health at Mount Sinai/Beth Israel Medical Center in New York, and also served as a voluntary physician with Englewood Hospital and Hackensack University Medical Center, both in NJ.

He is board certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine, and fellowship trained in Gastroenterology at Lenox Hill Hospital, New York City and in Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy at Beth Israel Medical Center/St. Vincent’s Hospital. Originally from Artesia, New Mexico, Dr. Bratcher received his medical degree from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and completed his residency and served as Chief Resident in Internal Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.

For an appointment with Dr. Bratcher, ask your physician for a referral, or call Gastroenterology Professional Services of BMC at 413-499-8590.

Berkshire Medical Center Recognized for Outstanding Record in Patient Safety with “A” Grade in Spring 2015 Hospital Safety Score

BMC in Elite Group of Straight “A” Hospitals

Berkshire Medical Center has been recognized by the Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Registry for

Defect-Free Care for stroke patients. The Defect-Free Care designation “demonstrates that a minimum of 85% of stroke patients received all of the interventions for which they were eligible.”

The Coverdell Hospital Collaborative awards were developed in 2009 to recognize participating hospitals, like BMC, for their achievements in improving the quality of care provided to stroke patients. BMC is one of 49 institutions in Massachusetts participating in the program, and has been involved in the Coverdell Hospital Collaborative since 2005.

The Defect-Free care measure includes ten stroke consensus measures, including Thrombolytic Therapy

Berkshire Medical Center has been awarded an “A” grade for Hospital Patient Safety by The Leapfrog

Group, and is one of only 182 hospitals nationwide to have achieved straight A grades since the initiative was launched in June of 2012. The grades are issued twice each year, in the fall and spring, and are the gold standard rating for patient safety, compiled under the guidance of the nation’s patient safety experts and administered by The Leapfrog Group, a national non-profit hospital safety watchdog.

“This consistent performance in patient safety as documented by the Hospital Patient Safety Score validates the commitment of Berkshire Medical Center, our physicians, nurses, technologists and all staff to provide nothing but the highest standard of care for our community,” said David Phelps, President and CEO of Berkshire Health Systems.

According to The Leapfrog Group, “An A grade is one of the most meaningful honors a hospital can achieve, and one of the most valuable indicators for patients looking for a safe place to receive care. Since the onset of the Hospital Patient Safety Score in the spring of 2012, the

publicly available data shows Berkshire Medical Center consistently exceeded the standards of other medical institutions in terms of patient safety procedures in place, earning it a Straight A’s distinction.”

The Hospital Patient Safety Score issues A, B, C, D or F grades to all US hospitals based on publicly available data on patient safety.

Partial credit for this award is not given, as it is an all or nothing measure. Data from January to December of 2014 were analyzed for this award.

The Coverdell Hospital Collaborative is a stroke registry and quality improvement initiative implemented as a partnership among the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Registry and the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines program.

The Institute for Organizational Learning held its third graduation ceremony for the Leadership &

Management Development Program on June 5th at the Pittsfield Country Club. In all, 19 managers from BHS entities were recognized for completing the 8-month long training. Participants represented a wide range of experience levels as well as functional and divisional roles.

Diane Kelly, RN, Chief Operating Officer applauded the group and cited sentiments shared by the participants’ capstone speeches that were formally presented the day before. Darlene Rodowicz, Chief Financial Officer and Arthur Milano, Vice President of Human Resources joined her in presenting certificates to the participants.

The graduating class nominated classmate Lou Ann Quinn, Clinical Manager of the North Adams Satellite Emergency Facility to offer congratulatory remarks on behalf of the class. She thanked senior management for the opportunity to participate in the program. Quinn,

Chaplain’s Corner: Torn-To-Pieces-Hood By Sister Colette Hanlon, SC, BMC Chaplain

Recently I have been reflecting on some wisdom from Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s wonderful book, “Gift From the Sea.” She quoted the famous psychologist and author, William James, who used the German word Zerrissenheit to

describe what I think so many of us are experiencing these days: “Torn-to-pieces-hood.”

There are invitations, pressures, demands and desires coming all at once from many different directions, including family obligations, friends, faith communities, work colleagues, charities we support, civic organizations, and, yes, even our pets. This list doesn’t begin to address other challenges, such as cars, living situations and leisure things. No wonder we experience torn-to-pieces-hood.

Must this be inevitable? Take a moment to think of at least three ways you personally can stay centered on your core values. Maybe it is solitude time, a sacred space, a meditation or yoga practice, a shared time of group prayer, music, nature or… We are not born to be torn. We are given life so we can live abundantly. If we find riches in and around us, we will promote our wholeness. Let’s just say no to Zerrissenheit.

Thanks and Recognition

S c o p e8

“Words cannot express our gratitude and heartfelt thanks to Dr. Steven Will and his team, Jim O`Brien, Sam Smith, and Maureen. I have worked in the health field most of my life and never have I seen such a warm, caring, professional attitude demonstrated by a very well organized team. They explained things in a manner that was precise and clear and met with the patient (my husband) three to four times in a 36-hour period. We never felt we were not educated or communicated with. Thank you again to all.” – A thank you email for BMC Neurosurgery from Lisa and David Brusie, Fairview Hospital employees

“Wonderful, fantastic, comfortable. They are an amazing team. I thank Dr. Lauren Slater and all of her colleagues for the great team work and care they gave me for my first experience of becoming a mom.” – Comment from a BMC Mother Baby Unit patient

“All of the many involvements of my health were well taken care of by the special staff at Fairview. They are the best.” – Comment from a Fairview Hospital patient

“I cannot express how excellent my overall experience was. Everyone was caring and attentive at all times, from doctors to nurses to the people who took blood and the people who served the food. I have no complaints whatsoever.” – Comment from a BMC Oncology patient

“My husband and I were vacationing in the Berkshires when I experienced an unfortunate mishap and suffered a broken hip. A broken hip is bad, but the idea of going through the surgery, hospitalization, etc., while in an unfamiliar city made it seem worse. As things turned out, the experience was as good and as pleasant as possible given the situation. Thank you for that.” – Comment from a BMC Orthopaedic Unit patient

“A nurse held my hands at the time of my back injections, asking me how I was doing. I told her I loved their pampering so much I may come back just for that.” – Comment from a Crane Center for Ambulatory Surgery patient

“I cannot say enough regarding how wonderful the entire nursing staff and Dr. Chi Zhang were. Complete professionals - one and all.” – Comment from an Endoscopy patient of the Northern Berkshire Campus of BMC
