One of the many components of providing integrative care for patients at the new

BMC Cancer Center is access to a social worker who specializes in Oncology support. Teresa Caldwell, LICSW, OSW-C, ACHP-SW, has joined the Cancer Care team at BMC, with an extensive background in Oncology social work.

“Most of my practice experience has been working with patients and families affected by cancer,” said Caldwell. “My services are available to BMC patients and their loved ones at the time of cancer diagnosis, during treatments, after treatment, during their survivorship and planning for the future. I will work with them at any time where there is a need.”

Caldwell graduated from the Washington University School of Social Work with a master’s degree focusing on healthcare social work. She has advanced certification in Oncology social work and Hospice and Palliative Care. She helped to develop psychosocial care programs at Washington University Cancer Center, the Ellis Fischel Cancer Center at the University of Missouri and Eastern Virginia Medical School. Prior to joining Berkshire Health Systems, Caldwell worked with HospiceCare in the Berkshires.

Appointments can be made with Caldwell for Oncology social work services by calling the Cancer Center at 413-443-6000.

The first phase of the $30 million BMC Cancer Center opened in November, featuring new offices for Berkshire Hematology Oncology, BMC Infusion Services and a dedicated cancer care Pharmacy and Laboratory. The next phase includes construction of a new glass-enclosed entryway and building façade at the Center, providing scenic views of the surrounding areas. This second phase also features the integrated program of support services, such as Oncology social work, a Wellness Center, physical therapies and more.

The final phase of construction will be the completion of our new Radiation Oncology Suite, where patients will receive the latest treatments. The last two phases are expected to be completed in 2014.

Employee Group Takes Wellness to Heart

A number of BHS employees recently banded together for a Wellness Challenge, and as a group succeeded in losing 75 pounds. With the goal of making healthy food choices and being more

active, a group of 18 BHS employees from five departments recently got together and supported each other as they sought to improve their health. In the process, the employees, who all work in the Bishop Clapp Building, lost a significant number of collective pounds in just one month.

Research shows that it’s easier to commit to a healthier lifestyle and attain weight loss when you have a strong support system, including social support, or being in a group that is committed to meeting your goals. That was a key to success, according to Alexis Keeler, Director of Process Engineering for BMC.

“Since we all work so well together to accomplish the organizational goals of Berkshire Health Systems, we decided to apply the same principles to our personal goals and create a ‘Living Healthy Weightloss Challenge.’ We selected and coordinated a number of activities that supported our goal, ‘Eat Healthy and Move More’, allowing individuals to pick and choose the activities that would work for them,” said Keeler. “We were fortunate to be supported by the BHS Wellness Department, that helped us with confidential weigh-ins and gave us weekly tips and literature on healthy habits.”

While individual weight and weight loss were kept confidential, the group was given the total for the initial month-long period, which was 75 pounds. Keeler said the group did track and share how close each participant was to achieving their personal goals. The group used a number of tactics to achieve success, including:

Salad Club – Each participant selected a day to bring in a salad based lunch for the group, with participants having a healthy and convenient lunch option almost every work day for a month. This also aided in eliminating take-out food orders.

Weigh-Ins – Confidential weigh-ins were recorded by the Wellness coach.

Walking and Running – A lunch-time walk was held each day for all who could participate on any given work day, and members of the group also met up after work for walking and/or running.

Wellness Fitness Activities – Smaller groups within the overall group enrolled together in various BHS Wellness programs, such as Fitness Boot Camp and Cyclone Circuit.

Elevator Boycott – The group pledged to take the stairs rather than the elevator.

Tracking – Using a shared tracking sheet, group members could see how close each person was to hitting their personal goal and support and congratulate each other.

Nutrition Lecture – The group scheduled a “Lunch and Learn” lecture with a Registered Dietitian from the BHS Wellness Department

Keeler said the group mentality resulted in success. “Proximity, since we all work in the same area and see each other every day, made it easy to motivate each other and also help keep each other on track to meet or exceed our goals. The support of the BHS Wellness Program was also invaluable, providing us with resources and key education.”

Learn About State-of-the-Art Orthopaedic Surgical Care at January Presentation

Berkshire Health Systems and Berkshire Orthopaedic Associates will present

a lecture in January focusing on the latest advances in hip and knee replacement, including the state-of-the-art Anterior Approach for hip replacement, and customized knee replacement.

Hip & Knee Replacement: State of the Art and Close to Home, will take place on Wednesday, January 15th from 6 to 8 pm at the Berkshire Hills Country Club in Pittsfield.

Drs. Kevin Mitts, James Harding and Mark Sprague will discuss the latest advances in hip and knee replacement surgeries, including the new anterior hip procedure and customized knee replacement, where the new knee is designed specifically for the individual patient. The event will also feature personal experiences of BMC Joint Replacement Program patients and a question and answer period.

We cannot accept any corrections to benefit election errors that are identified after December 27. So a careful review of your statement is very important.

Any changes to your 2014 ET Cash In Election can be made directly to the Personal Information screen on the MyBHS website. These changes must also be completed by December 27.

“I joined the Wellness Program over the summer even though I do not have Wellness insurance through BHS. I wanted to participate in some of the great programs that Wellness was offering. Over the past several months I have met great people from other departments and taken part in numerous activities after work including; Beginners Bootcamp, Exercise, Keeping it Simple at Berkshire Nautilus and Cyclone Circuit. The best news was at my annual physical; I lost 12 pounds without dieting, my cholesterol went from 212 to 154 and I now have a waist. I’ve toned my body and feel wonderful! Thank you Wellness!” -LD

Thanks and Recognition

In Memoriam• Dorothy “Dottie” Howe, who worked as a Registered Nurse at the former St. Luke’s and Hillcrest Hospitals, now Berkshire Medical Center, died on November 25th at the age of 83.

• Concetta “Dolly” Stankiewicz, who formerly worked in Food Service and Nutrition at BMC, died on December 3rd at the age of 85. She retired from BMC in 1991 after 13 years of service.

• Jane F. Brown, who formerly worked at Mt. Greylock Extended Care facility, died on December 3rd at the age of 76. She worked as a dietary aide for Mt. Greylock Extended Care.

• John Wnukowski, a maintenance supervisor for Berkshire Medical Center for 20 years, died on December 13th at the age of 80. He retired in 1988.

• Mary E. Barnes, who worked for the former St. Luke’s and Hillcrest Hospitals, now Berkshire Medical Center, died on December 14th.

The staff of Berkshire Health Systems offers its deepest condolences to their friends and family.

The motto of the Christopher Brothers is, “It’s better to light one candle than to curse the Darkness.” Their News Notes reach out to people all over the world. It is, in a way, I believe, the motto of almost every religious tradition and lighting candles or stringing lights or gathering around a bonfire is our way of affirming that the darkness that comes into our world and our lives every now and then will not define us or win out.

I believe it is the unwritten, perhaps unspoken motto of BMC and every one of you who work here. For it is you, whether you’re the person who cleans our patient’s rooms or the aide, nurse or physician who provides hands on care who gives life to this motto for the people who come here often in a very dark place unable to light that candle for themselves. You light up their lives and, as many of you know they often light up ours. Happy New Year to all!
