BMC Crane Center Achieves National Recognition for Patient Safety

The Crane Center for Ambulatory Surgery has been recognized by a national magazine for its

commitment to patient safety. Outpatient Surgery Magazine has honored the Crane Center with its 2014 OR Excellence Award for Patient Safety. The magazine cited BMC’s investment in using an on-site patient safety trainer as “the centerpiece of the facility’s heightened efforts to safeguard its patients.”

“Our commitment to patient safety begins before the patient arrives at the Crane Center,” said Carol Fairchild, RN, BS, CASC, Director of the BMC Center. “The procedure is verified by the scheduler,

“Berkshire Health Systems has been honored by Truven Analytics as a 100 Top Hospital, by Healthgrades with its Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence and by CareChex as a Top 100 Hospital for Overall Hospital Care,” said Lauri Klefos, Chief Marketing Officer for 1Berkshire. “These awards are indicative of the kind of quality healthcare BHS provides, rivaling the level of care normally found in more metropolitan areas, and also highlights the power they have in drawing people here to work and to live by demonstrating that we have an incredible network of healthcare options.”

Reggie Cooper, Chair of the Board of 1Berkshire and Managing Director of Canyon Ranch in Lenox points to the work BHS is doing to bring the Canyon Ranch Institute Life Enhancement Program to underserved members of the Berkshire community. This health and wellness education and training program is part of a long-term BHS investment in the community, focused on wellness and disease prevention. The core goal is to provide participants in the program with the knowledge and tools needed to make better choices and take better care of themselves and their loved ones. This innovative program has already helped to change the lives of 60 people, along with their family and friends, in Berkshire County.

“This partnership is a great example of Berkshire Health Systems commitment to improving the health and well-being of our community, which is a core of its mission. As a community we are fortunate to have BHS as a national leader

and we use a universal protocol form that starts in pre-op and focuses on patient identification, procedure verification and site-marking. Everything is documented and it’s a very, very rigid procedure. It creates at least three hard-stops, where we confirm that we have everything we need for the procedure to be safe and successful. If something isn’t right, the chart is flagged, and the patient doesn’t enter the OR until flags are removed by the people who put them there.”

Even after the patient is in the operating theater, there is another physician-led time out before any incisions are made. Fairchild says this empowers employees, promotes communication and the implementation of fail-safe procedures. Many additional steps are included in the Crane

in quality healthcare and the role that plays in enhancing the overall image, and health, of the Berkshires,” said Cooper. “We certainly have seen that in their recent efforts to stabilize and restore needed healthcare services in Northern Berkshire.”

When North Adams Regional Hospital closed in March of 2014, Berkshire Health Systems quickly stepped in and assumed responsibility for essential healthcare services, including primary care and OB/GYN practices, home health care and hospice services, laboratory and imaging. In May, BHS opened a 24-hour Satellite Emergency Facility in North Adams, providing comprehensive critical and non-critical emergency care services. As a result, BHS hired over 150 former North Adams Regional Hospital employees to provide these services.

“We are so pleased to be recognized by 1Berkshire, an entity that fosters the ability to join forces to advance economic development,” said David Phelps, President and CEO of BHS. “The future of healthcare in the Berkshires is dependent on our ability to provide clinical excellence and economically sustainable services. We do this through continual investments in our people, our facilities and our technology. Examples of this include our unique partnership with the Elms College, providing tuition-free education for our employees who wish to advance in nursing, and other similar education initiatives, and our ongoing physician recruitment efforts that have been successful in bringing world-class physicians to practice in our community.”

Center’s patient safety process, providing top-to-bottom initiatives, always with an eye on further improvement.

“We used Crew Resource Management to develop these initiatives, and we want to continue building on our success,” said Fairchild.

Outpatient Surgery Magazine serves as a meeting place and a marketplace for decision-makers in facilities where ambulatory surgery is done. The magazine facilitates the exchange of ideas, advice, experiences and information between surgical facility management team members. Issued monthly, it also delivers relevant info and advice from experts, professional advisors, industry, and others.

Ecu-Health Care, a non-profit community organization that provides Northern Berkshire residents with information and application assistance to access state health insurance programs, has announced that it will relocate to the Northern

Berkshire Campus of Berkshire Medical Center, effective October 24th. Ecu-Health Care will occupy the second floor office it had used for many years prior to the closing of the former North Adams Regional Hospital, 71 Hospital Avenue. The office is in the former Doctor’s Building, located between the Ambulatory Care Center and the Clark House.

Ecu-Health Care is currently located at 26 Union Street in North Adams. The office will be closed on October 23rd for the move, reopening on October 24th. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5 pm.

“Since the closure of North Adams Regional Hospital, Berkshire Health Systems has provided Ecu-Health Care with significant support, allowing us to quickly move to new quarters in early April, and BHS has consistently aided us in continuing our mission for the community,” said Charles “Chip” Joffe-Halpern, Executive Director of Ecu-Health Care. “We are grateful that we can now return to the office setting at the BMC Northern Berkshire Campus, and I thank Berkshire Health Systems for its support of our organization.”

The Employee Electronic Record, known as MyBHS, moves into its next phase in the near future with the addition of Performance Manager, an electronic system that will help the organization improve the communication of job expectations and evaluation of performance. Performance Manager is a paperless system for performance appraisals, job descriptions, skills and goals all merged into one place and specifically designed for healthcare.

“Performance Manager will help Berkshire Health Systems to provide a faster and more efficient approach to appraisals for managers and their staff,” said Arthur Milano, BHS Vice President of Human Resources.

“This will benefit all employees, with managers having access to a comprehensive online appraisal system and staff getting a clearer vision of goals and objectives and how to meet them.”

Performance Manager includes not only the paperless performance appraisals, but also: online job descriptions, including employee electronic sign-off; electronic workflows; automated notifications of due dates for appraisals; improved process for introductory reviews; position and coaching feedback for reference; manager and staff goal collaboration; and a streamlining of all aspects of the process to one central source.

On-Site Training: Manager training sessions will be offered on November 5th and 6th in four locations and with eight training sessions. This training is required for all managers who have direct reports. The times and locations are listed below and are also available via BHS Employee Web Portal, manager emails and the next issue of Scope.

Why? Because it is hard to lose or maintain weight while being tempted by unhealthy treats! It’s time to change your work environment to make it easier

to support making healthier choices. Studies have shown that simply moving a bowl of candy from a desk to a far-away file cabinet is enough to reduce consumption. Better results come with keeping the treats out of sight. We all know that the best option is to not bring it in at all.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women age 40 and older should have a mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. While mammograms can miss some cancers, they are still a very good way to find breast cancer.

The most important thing is to see a doctor right away if you notice any changes in your breasts.

“From the parking valet to the kindness of my therapist, I wouldn't change a thing. Everyone was very helpful, cheerful and professional.” – Comment from a BMC Center for Rehabilitation patient

“I was at the Crane Center for two procedures in the past several months. The care I received each time was phenomenal. The staff is top notch.” – Comment from a Crane Center for Ambulatory Surgery patient

“We are so appreciative of all the services Fairview offers, but particularly Advocacy for Access – Cheryl and Jen are always there for us with the answers.” – Comment from a Fairview Hospital patient

“The doctors and nurses at the Mother Baby Unit have all been so warm and nice that if my husband and I ever decide to have another child, I have all the confidence in the world to come back here. Thank you all so much. We couldn't say it enough.” – Comment from a BMC Mother Baby Unit patient

“It was outstanding. Without reservation, I would highly recommend BMC to our many local friends and those who come to the Berkshires in the summer. If I have to be hospitalized or have any future surgeries, I wouldn't hesitate to come to BMC again, rather than some large hospital where you are just a number.” – Comment from a BMC Orthopaedic Unit patient

“Excellent group of professionals. Kind, caring, funny. Made me feel very comfortable. They performed their duties efficiently and caring for my comfort during my time there.” – Comment from a BMC Cardiology Services patient
