The BMC Health Fair celebrated 10 years of Wellness for

Berkshire Health Systems, with over 350 employees visiting the Private Dining Rooms on May 11th for free screenings, education, interactive displays and refreshments. In all, 24 departments across the spectrum of care participated in the Health Fair, with staff providing helpful information on good nutrition, exercise, health screenings, high blood pressure, diabetes, pastoral care and spirituality and much more.

Over 150 employees had their blood pressure checked, 200 picked up information about donating blood and its importance to the hospital and community, 43 scheduled mammograms to help prevent breast cancer or detect it early, and 50 scheduled their annual Wellness Screening.

Speech Therapy Services Available at Fairview Hospital

The Fairview Hospital Rehabilitation Department now offers comprehensive Speech-Language Pathology Services

on-site, and at the Fairview Hospital Outpatient Rehabilitation Clinic, located at 10 Maple Avenue in Great Barrington, filling an important service previously unavailable in the Southern Berkshires. Comprehensive clinical speech-language therapy services, including evaluation and treatment for pediatric through geriatric populations, are provided for those who present with speech, language, hearing or swallowing disorders, on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.

Theresa Sullivan, Au.D., CCC-SLP/A, has joined Fairview’s Rehabilitation team, bringing with her over 36 years of clinical experience in New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts. She has extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric, adult and geriatric populations, with expertise in Dysphagia, Voice, and Neurological disorders. Sullivan has worked in a variety of settings including Acute and Long-Term Care facilities, pediatric and adult rehabilitation, and private practice.

Her credentials include dual certification in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA).

Fairview Medical Staff Honors Physicians’ Commitment Through a Donation to Community Food Pantry

The Fairview Hospital medical staff has made a $1,000 donation to the People's Pantry in Great

Barrington in honor of National Doctors Day.

Dr. Brian Burke, Fairview's Chief of the Medical Staff, and Kathy Townsend, Medical Staff Coordinator, delivered the check to Rosemary Carpenite, who oversees operations of the pantry. In a letter to physicians serving South Berkshire, Dr. Burke wrote, "We feel exceptionally fortunate to have you as a member of Fairview Hospital’s medical staff. You are at the center of the strong network of care that provides accessible, high quality health services for our community. Instead of giving you a tangible gift, our doctors' commitment is best reflected and appreciated by making this gift to help the vulnerable in our community. "

The donation will help the pantry purchase fresh foods to distribute on a weekly basis. In the past year, the People’s Pantry has experienced a sharp increase in families accessing food. The pantry is open every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Christian Cavalry Church on North Plain Road in Great Barrington.

Fairview Hospital Pharmacy Renovation Improves Patient Safety and Staff Satisfaction

The Pharmacy at Fairview Hospital, which serves inpatients, outpatients and employees, recently completed an extensive

remodeling of its facilities. Without increasing square footage, the renovation added a segregated IV buffer room, increased work area and improved lighting.

“The benefits of the reconfiguration of space directly enhance patient safety by creating a better environment for the process of medication dispensing,” said Pharmacy Interim Operations Manager Linda Jackson, RN-BC, MS, CS, who also serves as the Director of Regulatory Compliance/Clinical Educator at Fairview. She noted that staff productivity and efficiency has greatly improved as a result of the remodeling.

As part of the renovation, key staff were trained and certified on the new isolator. “Fairview’s Pharmacy has made a major advance in the operations of the service with this renovation,” said Jackson, noting that the Massachusetts DPH has approved an increase in the Beyond Use Date (BUD) on compounded items prepared at Fairview. Previously, medications mixed under the old hood had a life of 12 hours immediate use at room temperature. The renovations and new pharmaceutical mixing systems now extend medication shelf life to 48 hours at room temperature, two weeks refrigerated and 45 days frozen.

Fairview’s Pharmacy is Joint Commission accredited.

Chaplain’s Corner: Good MedicineBy The Reverend Art Kaufman, BMC Chaplain

Recent research affirms what we have always suspected; giving thanks, even when it seems as if there is little to be thankful for is good for us and, for those who need healing it is good medicine. And it’s easy to take, or should I say

practice?

Here’s one way to do it that I use at the beginning of every day (outside if practical). In a relaxed standing position with hands together in front of my heart I say the words, “I give thanks that I’ve been able to wake and greet this morning and welcome into my life yet another day with all the challenges, possibilities and opportunities it has to offer me, and especially for the people who will share this day with me and whom I will share my day.” Thank you for “listening.”
