Student Highlights – Striving for Success with Spel ling This week I would like to highlight all students across our school who have worked extremely well towards striving to achieve 6 months growth for 6 month input in spelling. We have many students who have achieved at least 6 months growth as well as students what made their own individual goal. We also had several students who made a lot more than 6 months growth which is fantastic. Prep Cale Tilly Evie Noah Evie Jack Charlotte CJ Jesse Blake

All these students are truly an example of lifelong learning happening across Tieri State School. I am very proud to have these students at our school. Well done Tieri State School! ☺ It has been great to see your confidence and ability grow throughout the year and your hard work and dedication to improving in our explicit improvement agenda for spelling is paying off.
Attendance Counts! Are you at school every day?
Oh No! Our Whole School Attendance is currently 92.0%. I know this has the potential to improve. We can achieve 96% or above attendance.
School Support Staff Recognition Week I would like to take this opportunity to celebrate how lucky we are to have the support staff that we have. This week is School Support Staff Recognition week. Cheryl Randell does an absolutely amazing job as our School’s Business Services Manager and she heads up a great team.

Academic Achievements and our Annual Implementation Plan Progress Every year we write our Annual Implementation Plan we collaborate with staff, P&C and students on how best to achieve the goals we wish to achieve and then review this plan to say how we are travelling 2 or 3 times a year. Our Key School Improvement goals for this year are:
2017 School
Priorities
School Attendance – Our target is an average student attendance rate of 96% or above Spelling – Our target is 70% of our students exceeding 1 year of spelling growth Explicit Teaching – Our target is that our school achieves the national mean in Spelling Quality Ensured – Whole School Consistent Teaching and Learning through Explicit Instruction
At this time of the year we are achieving and even surpassing these goals. It is very important to me that parents are informed and know what is happening in their children’s classrooms. I get the opportunity in P&C meetings to go into more detail as to what is happening in classrooms and why but I do try to ensure that you get some information relating to curriculum and learning in the newsletter as well. I believe it is important for you to understand why we collect and analyse internal and external achievement data extensively, and that this information influences us as to what areas of the school and which students need additional support/ extension. Assessment is not just about reporting back. It is about how we can improve our practice, what teaching strategies are working for us across the school and in individual classes. It gives us the opportunity to give our students and teachers relevant feedback on how to improve individual and school results. Please contact the school at any time if you want more information about curriculum, assessment or how best to support your child.
Strive for Success Virtue – Consideration Consideration is being thoughtful about other people and their feelings. It is thinking about how your actions affect them and caring about how they feel. It is paying attention to what other people like and don’t like, and doing things that give them happiness.
Striving to be Lifelong Learners – The answer to la st week’s riddle Did you guess the right answer? Q: I had 10 gems and I dropped 7 of them. How many gems do I have left? A: Three gems left. Striving to be Lifelong Learners – This week’s ridd le inspired by Abbie and Beau ☺ Q: If I have 100 tennis balls and I take away 19 footballs, how many balls do I have left? If you think you know the answer please put your riddle entry into the MAGIC MAIL BOX located at the office. If you have the correct answer your name will go into the draw to win an ice cream voucher thank you to our local sponsor Tieri Caltex! The draw will take place on Friday’s morning assembly next week. You must be present to win unless your absenteeism is explained. Good Luck! ☺ Remember we are all striving to be lifelong learners. What have you learnt this week? Have a great week! ☺ Miss Sarah-Jane Clark Proud Principal of Tieri State School
Curriculum Update:
English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world so it is not surprising that so many people want to learn how
to speak English.
FACTS ABOUT ENGLISH:
1. ‘E’ is the most commonly used letter in the English language. In fact, as many as one in eight of all the
letters written in English is ‘e’.
2. More English words begin with the letter ‘S’ than any other letter of the alphabet.
3. ‘I am.’ is the shortest complete sentence in the English language.
4. The longest English word that can be spelled without repeating any letters is ‘uncopyrightable’.
5. The following sentence contains seven different spellings of the sound “ee”: ‘He believed
Caesar could see people seizing the seas’.
6. Do you know what is special about the following sentence? ‘The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog’. This
type of sentence is called a ‘pangram’ as it uses every letter in the English language.
7. The longest word in English has 45 letters: ‘pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis’! It is a type of lung disease
caused by inhaling ash and sand dust.
8. There is no word in the English language that rhymes with month, orange, silver or purple.
9. ‘Queueing’ is the only word with five consecutive vowels (five vowels in a row). This is a great word to use when you play
hangman!
10. There are nine different ways to pronounce ‘ough’ in English. This sentence contains all of them: ‘A rough-coated, dough-
faced, thoughtful ploughman strode through the streets of Scarborough; after falling into a slough, he coughed and
hiccoughed.’ You can search for these words on the Cambridge Dictionary website to listen to their pronunciation.
http://dictionary.cambridge.org/
11. Due to a printing error, there was a word in the English dictionary from 1932 to 1940 which didn’t have a
meaning. The word was ‘Dord’ and it became known as ‘ghost word’.
12. ‘Pronunciation’ is the word which is most mispronounced in the English language!
13. English is the official language of the sky! It doesn’t matter which country they are from, all pilots speak in
English on international flights.
14. The most difficult tongue twister in the English language is “sixth sick sheik’s sixth sheep’s sick”.
Why not try it out on your friends and see if any of them can say it without making a mistake?
15. Approximately one new word is added to the English language every two hours and around 4,000
new words are added to the English dictionary every year.
One extra interesting fact for you:
Have you ever wondered why the English computer keyboard is set out in the way it is instead of in
alphabetical order? The reason for this is on early typewriters, the keys needed to be arranged in a certain way
so that the mechanical rods which held the letters did not clash too much and jam. The letters needed to be
separated so that the ones which were most commonly used were not next to each other.

This term has already been a very busy PE and Arts term for our students at Tieri State School. We have had CQ Football visit us as well as the Queensland Cricket Development Officers. In PE this term students are learning the skills and rules necessary to play a game of cricket. Our junior school students are working on the modified game of cricket whilst our upper school are working towards a T 20 game of cricket. In the second half of the term we have students attending the Capricornia Track and Field trials and U10 Josh Hannay and Steven Bell Challenge. In the Arts this term we are focusing on Music with all students throughout the school learning to play the recorder. All students will be offered the opportunity to play in the school Recorder Band at the end of year concert. This term has also seen the Circus Challenge visit Tieri State School. All students attended a whole school Circus presentation followed by class workshops where students learnt how to perform circus skills of juggling and plate spinning. The program for the Central Highlands Eisteddfod has now been published and distributed
to all students involved in solos and duets. As previously advised, all students involved in
solos, duets and small groups will be responsible for ensuring that they arrange their own
transport to their events on Wednesday August 30 and Thursday August 31.
Please ensure that all students arrive at their designated venue at least 20 minutes before
they are scheduled to perform so that they may tune/warm up etc.
Students attending on Wednesday and Thursday will need to be in full school uniform
(unless in costume for a verse/song) and should come prepared with:
• A copy of their music/verse for the adjudicator (with their event number and competitor
number clearly marked on the top left hand corner - Ms Hilder has the Instrumental Music
students’ music)
• A water bottle
• Any equipment that they need for their performance (e.g. instrument, music, CD’s, etc)
Please note that you are responsible for your child and their behaviour at this event.
We are also still in need of volunteers to help run venues across Emerald. If you can spare a
few hours please let me know asap.
Good luck to all of our students performing in this year’s Eisteddfod and if you have any
questions please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected].

BOOK WEEK/BOOK FAIR 2017
 Monday 21 August - Friday 25 August
Children’s Book Week is an annual event promoted by the Children’s Book Council of Australia. It is a week where
we can celebrate books and Australian authors and illustrators. It is also an opportunity to promote reading and
writing, as well as an appreciation of books.
It gives us a chance to view and read some of the books that have been selected as the “Short-listed Books of the
Year”.
The theme for this year’s Book Week is
Over the next few weeks, classes will be hard at work creating their masterpieces to promote one of the shortlisted
titles being nominated for this year’s CBCA’s Early Childhood/Picture Book of the Year Award. This art work will be
displayed in the library, so look out for it during Book Fair.
Students, don’t forget to enter our Book Week Competition for your chance to win a voucher to spend at Book Fair.
This year we are running a Design a Poster competition to tie in with the ‘Escape to Everywhere’ theme. You are
asked to design an A4 - A3 size poster that advertises a place, real or imagined, that you would love to escape to.
Your poster can be illustrated using whatever medium you choose. The poster should include the name of your
escape place/world and it should show everyone what you like about this place eg. what can you see or what
activities can you do there. Students from Prep to Year 6 are encouraged to participate. Entries, clearly labelled with
your name and class, are to be handed into the library by Monday 21/08/17.
Book Character Parade is on Friday 25/08/16. Come dressed as your favourite book character or as a character from
an ‘escape’ book to fit in with this year’s theme.
In celebration of Book Week, a Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the library from Monday 21/08/17 to Friday
25/08/17. The fair will be open before school from 8.00am - 8.30am, during first break, 10.35am - 11.00am and after
school, from 2.30 pm - 3.30 pm.
Purchases can be paid for via cash, credit card or cheque (made payable to Tieri State School P&C). Please note that
orders may have to be placed for some books and we will send off a bulk order to Scholastic at the end of the fair.
Commission earned from Book Fair sales will enable the library to select more wonderful books to add to our
collection. Come along and have a browse!
