Sue Olson From the desk of Pastor Sue…

This has been my conviction for my entire life. When I found out I was finally able to an-swer God’s call to public ministry, I was excited and overjoyed. Never in a million years would I have guessed God would ask me to serve in rural Minnesota among the cornfields! You have encouraged me, nurtured, taught and loved me in ways that are simultaneously humbling and uplifting. I thank you for your support and encouragement as I grew from stranger, to Intern, to Lay Associate Pastor, to your called Pastor. I truly believe that God has called me to Long Lake Lutheran Church for a purpose. I have asked myself why God would want a woman in her mid 60’s to be your lead pastor. I followed the Synod guide-lines for assignment, but nothing felt right about it. I still felt a strong message from God that my life experiences and skills were needed here. The NW and MSP Synods agreed to allow me to stay if the congregation prayerfully considered this, and I was willing. You know the answer to that!

Now, with a vote of confidence from this congregation and a Letter of Call, I will be or-dained and installed here during the evening service, Wednesday, July 14th and will begin ministry with 20/20 vision for the future. I hope to do this with a visioning team who will create a mission/action plan with short range and long range goals. I am available to hear your concerns and your joys; please share your thoughts with me. I am excited to try some new things, but first, I want to hear what you love the most about your church, so I don’t mess up the ministry excellence we have strived for and focused on in the past.

SAVE THE DATE: You are all invited to a dinner on Wednesday, July 14th beginning at 4:30 pm. Worship with Ordination and Installation will follow at 6:00 pm. Cake and coffee will be served following the service. Bishop Ann M. Svennungsen will preside over the Ordina-tion and Installation. The color for the Ordination celebration is red; I invite you to join in my big day with a splash of red.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart,

Pastor Sue

Director of Youth and Family Ministries

We are big baseball fans at our house. I recently read a story about Pirates outfielder

Gregory Polanco. In June of 2014 he was called up from the minor leagues to play for

the Pirates because his batting average for the minor league team was off the charts.

In his first 12 games in the majors, he got a hit every game (a huge accomplishment) and

after three weeks he was boasting a batting average of .360 Pretty impressive for a

rookie. After six weeks however, his batting average had dropped to about .260 and he

had gone several games without a hit. So what happened? What changed? The

game didn’t change. Baseball was still the same right? The big change was that now

the other teams had adjusted – they had seen him and knew how to pitch to him and

adjusted their pitching and defense. They saw what they were up against and made a

change.

Change is hard. Most of us don’t like it. We joked about this even in a sermon a few

weeks ago – most of us don’t even like to sit in a different pew in church. We are com-

forted by routine and by our rituals and habits. Sometimes, however, change can be

good.

In our recent meetings with Education and Youth it seems like there was a phrase that

kept coming up over and over again – “Shake it up” (and no, we aren’t talking about the

former Disney show with Zendaya). We are doing lots of great things here, and we will

continue to do those things. However, we want to try to figure out ways we can do

some things better with our Children and Youth and so we want to try some new things

to try and figure out how we can do this in the best possible way. We have to “adjust

our game” in order to most effectively be able to be in community with and share the

Gospel with today’s kids and teens and we are so excited to do that! Keep watching for

more ways you as a congregation can support our programs by volunteering and giving.

If you have children or youth watch for information about all of our fall start ups and

fundraising opportunities for the new year. Continue to pray for us as we “shake it up”!

It’s amazing that we will soon be talking about the State Fair and going back to school shortly after you read this. Summer in Minnesota truly is a gift from God, but often goes by too fast. Soon, some of our youth, along with Margaret Bau-er and Shawna will be heading out to Denver, CO on a mission trip. Please keep all of them in your prayers as they head across part of the country to join with other groups in Jesus’ name. I would like to thank all of you that came to our congregational meetings on Ju-ly 21st. Weeks leading up to the meetings, I had several people tell me that they were unable to be there that day. I would say around 15 or so. We still managed to have 100 people in attendance! It makes me so happy to witness the love and support for our church from our congregation. I’d especially like to thank Therese Cathers and John Hass for volunteering to be counters for our offer-ings. Your work may go unnoticed at times, but it is definitely appreciated all the time. Thank you for stepping up! I’m also excited to offer a Call to our very own Pastor Sue! Pastor Sue had a very strong showing of support by vote of 95%. A tentative date of installment and ordination is scheduled for our Wednesday night service on August 14 at 6pm. Please make an effort to come and continue to show your support for Pastor Sue at her installation/ordination. One final thought: Please continue to pray for Long Lake as we search for a youth director. Although calling Pastor Sue is great news, we still need to per-manently fill our youth director position. We will continue to work on filling this important position with the appropriate candidate for our church. God’s Peace, Matt

We started a meeting with prayer and a verse from Jeremiah 32:27 "I am the Lord God of all man-kind. Is anything too hard for me?" We are excited to have had so many attendees for the education committee meeting. The educa-tion committee is excited to announce some changes happening for Sunday school, confirmation, and high school youth. We are also gearing up for rally Sunday. We are going to have a multi-aged Sunday School with a different focus each week (music, art, story telling, service, etc.) We are also going to be on a rotating schedule for our teachers. This will also provide more flexibility of our volunteers. We will be making a slight change in curriculum, more in-formation to come on this. We are always looking for volunteers to help. Please see me if you have a passion you would like to share with the children or youth. Confirmation letters will be going out soon. Please make sure to watch your mailbox. The confir-mation retreat is going to look a bit different. Please make sure to come to the parent meeting and read your letter. See Shawna with questions. We are also going to start a High School group every other Sunday, this will be led by Marcy Stoeck-el and Margaret Bauer. It will be called the "Breakfast club", yes eating breakfast is part of it too. If you are of high school age or know some friends, join us! Our three missions for the year are going to be centered around helping other children. We are go-ing to be helping the children's hospital in some way in the fall, making birthday bags for the local food shelf around Christmas time, and going to feed my starving children in the spring. We focused on something local, something national, and something international. Please watch for ways every-one can help. The money collected in the children's offering bucket each week will go to one of these three missions. Important dates: Spoke Folk concert August 8 at 6:30 (meal before) Rally Sunday and Blessing of the backpacks on September 8 Parent meeting for confirmation on September 11 Installation of the Sunday School teachers on September 15 (9:30 only) Third grade bible presentation in October Trunk or Treat on October 26 Blessings on a beautiful day! Dear Long Lake Lutheran, Thank you for all of your support and pray-ers. My eagle project is nearing completion and I am very grateful for all of your help. I am going to work on filling behind the wall and putting some black dirt in. I will be leaving for summer camp soon, but I will complete the project when I return. How can it be August already? Did summer come and go that fast?

It will be State Fair time and school starting. Then soon it will be Rally Sunday right around the corner. WOO HOO !

Please keep our community and church in your prayers.

A big thank you to Ron S for taking care of the property details this year. You did a great job and we do appreciate your time.

Thank you to all the volunteers for making this church run smoothly through their time, talent and treasures. All forms of stewardship are appreciated.

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8

Pray your way through the day!

Kathie S.

What is Rally Day?

It is a family reunion of sorts. It is not just about rallying for Sunday School and Fall pro-gramming. It is a congregational event. So let’s Shake It Up and Put the Rally back in Rally Day! On Sept. 8th, we will worship together as one family beginning at 8:30 am. We will roll right into a celebration of our joys and triumphs as we move forward with 20/20 vision! We will continue with stuffing bags for our two mission partners, then join together for hotdogs, chips and root beer floats! You won’t want to miss this one!

Greetings!

We’re half way through 2019 and are feeling strong! I’m so very thankful for this community of faithful people and the passion they bring as we strive to move forward. On July 14th the Congregational Life committee met to discuss ways in which we could align with this mis-sion. We had a very productive conversation. We shared ideas about how our team could help bring people together to enhance our congregation’s life together.

As we embark on a new chapter for Long Lake Lutheran, we felt it was appropriate to strengthen our foundation. We’re excited to examine the information within our current database that helps Long Lake Lutheran communicate with our active and non-active mem-bers. Rally Sunday is right around the corner which will provide the perfect opportunity for our congregation to double check that we have the most current information on file. This will allow the church to effectively communicate in the preferred method chosen. Please be on the lookout for this and support us in strengthening our foundation so that we can move into 2020 successfully.

“for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” – Philippians 2:13

ALL are welcome to join us for our next meeting on Sunday, August 11th after the 2nd service.

Prayers and Blessings! Kara Hepp

ADULT FORUM will begin again on Rally Sunday, September 8th.

We will continue to meet in the conference room at 9:30 am every Sunday.

We will be using Brene Brown’s “The Gifts of Imperfection” as our study

guide. All are welcome to join!

All of these events are a chance for teens and the younger generation, along with retirees,

to help out around the church in some capacity.

We know this can be hard to do for all those people who are working, but we can try and

find some time that would work around your working hours if we work together.

With that said, this is an invite for anyone that could help out at these functions to come and

join us when you can. Most of the time any events are posted well ahead of time. We hope

to see new people around church functions. Come and join us!

Step Eight Made a list of all persons we have harmed, and become willing to make amends to them all.

A.A. Step By Step

As the Big Book states, Step Eight is the beginning of the end of isolation. This 8th Step list helps me to let go of the guilt and regret I may be carrying from the past. I will approach this Step with love and gentleness because I take it for my own freedom. Revisiting the Fourth Step inventory can help to refresh memories. In every area of my life I must take responsibility. When making a list of the people I have harmed, I must consider putting myself at the top of the list. How much has my behavior harmed me... directly or indirectly?

Step Eight is about forgiving and being forgiven. If we hate and hold resentments against someone we are tied to them. We are enslaved by our resentments. If forgiveness doesn’t come easily we pray and talk about it until it does come. We pray even when we don’t mean it at first, for it is through forgiveness we can finally let go of the past and begin anew.

This Step is about making a list and being willing to change. It’s not about making the amends but becoming willing to do so. Sometimes you don’t even know who the person is. You just remember the incident. Just describe the incident as fully as possible and list it. The list can get very long and detailed but the more effort you put into it, the more cleansing you get out of it.

Why do we need to do all this? Until we totally examine our lives honestly, we are unable to see how much harm these character defects have caused in our lives. We cannot get rid of them till we truly recognize them.

Anger and resentment waste great amounts of energy. We are always the losers when it comes to holding onto resentments. Often we have the tendency to feel guilty about everything we’ve ever done. That’s unearned guilt. Writing helps clarify whether or not we are punishing ourselves for no reason. Our intent in Step Eight is to be as honest and forthcoming as we can - not so we’ll feel bad about ourselves, but so we can begin to free ourselves from guilt.

The life we live is ours alone.

Give thanks to God over and over again.

“43Do not take the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, for my hope is in your ordinances. I

will keep your law continually, forever and ever. I shall walk at liberty, for I have sought your precepts. I will also speak of your decrees before kings, and shall not be put to shame; I find my delight in your commandments, because I love them.. Psalm 119:43-47
