AUGUST 2019
“JUST OUT FOR A WALK”
Mark 1:16-20: 16As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee,
he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake—
for they were fishermen. 17And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me
and I will make you fish for people.’ 18And immediately they left
their nets and followed him. 19As he went a little farther, he saw
James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat
mending the nets. 20Immediately he called them; and they left their
father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.
There are three things that strike me as ridiculous in this story.
First, Jesus appears to recruit a pair of brothers into ministry
while they are already employed. In fact, each of the fishermen
are in the midst of working with their respective employers on the scene! Second, the prospective
disciples actually accept the offer on the spot and proceed to leave the family business without
negotiating their salary or benefits. Lastly, the story gives no indication as to why Jesus chose these
people. They don’t appear to hold any special skills fit for ministry.
More than anything, it looks like Jesus went out for a walk and decided to make a recruiting pitch
on a whim. It all worked out though. The four fishermen became some of Jesus’ most trusted
companions. Peter and the two sons of Zebedee were there at the transfiguration of Jesus. They were
there again on the last night in which Jesus prayed in the garden. Also, Peter was declared by Jesus
to be the rock on which the church would be built. I’d say Jesus did a great job recruiting the day he
walked along the Sea of Galilee.
Although I’m not Jesus, I wonder if you would be open to doing some of the work that is involve in
fishing for people. In my short time here, I noticed the nursery operates on a kind of self -serve basis.
Parents are welcome to enter the nursery, make use of the toys for their little ones, and listen to the
service through a speaker. This is okay, but is it the best we can do? Would a young parent and his/
her child return to our church or would they decide to check out another? After a long week, I know
most parents would love to sit, sing, and worship next to a real live adult as opposed to worshiping
alone in a nursery.
Moreover, I could not help but overhear our annual Trunk or Treat event is in need of some dire
help and new leadership. Tracy Kramer has graciously committed to running the show for one more
year, but next year someone else will have to take the reins. In the meantime, we need at least 25
people to commit to bringing their automobile and some candy to make Trunk or Treat 2019 a success.
From what I see on Sundays, we have plenty of people who both own a car and can afford to purchase
some candy. Again, it’s our hope we can get at least 25 people to commit to the event.
I understand the needs are many. I understand there are people who wear many hats in this
church, and I truly thank you for your service. Still, I hope you would consider the fun adventure that
is before you. We have lots of work yet to do.
May God continue to bless you so that
you can be a blessing to others.

N.O.A.H. Project (Networking, Organizing
and Advocating for the Homeless)
It’s that time again! The NOAH Project’s
annual Sock-It-To-Me September donation drive is just
around the corner and they have asked our Mission com-
mittee to extend the invitation to Commerce UMC to help.
You can place your donation of NEW Socks & NEW Under-
wear in the designated tubs now through September. Men’s
(ALL sizes) socks and underwear are most in demand, BUT
Women all sizes are also needed.
Last year the project collected a total 7,615 pairs of
socks – everyone of which were greatly appreciated to
keep many feet warm during the winter and prevent
blisters during the summer. Commerce UMC happily
earned the “Silver Skivvies Award” (on display in the
narthex) as the location with the highest number of pairs
of underwear given (577 of the 8,220 total the project
collected).
Both Socks & Underwear again this year are in competition
for achieving highest number donated awards. Please help
us reach our goal to keep our Silver Skivvies Award.

They address life skills, health and well-being, and prepare the women for independence. BFA will discuss more in depth about their Center and ways people can volunteer/help this amazing organization. Everyone is welcome and this is a free event. www.facebook.com/BeautyForAshesMAP/

We will be meeting at Commerce United Methodist Church upstairs in the Wesley Room. Group Leader: Kati Brush, 586-991-1389
We educate because there is a lot to learn about the complexities of human trafficking and how to prevent it. We inspire people to take action and we help them engage in activities that address root causes. We believe human trafficking can be eradicated by ending the demand that drives exploitation. We need you and your fellow community members to help us respond to the atrocity of modern slavery that exists throughout Michigan!

Halloween already ? ? ?
On Saturday, October 26th, we have an evening (6 p.m. – 8 p.m.) Halloween Event on the calendar, called
"Trunk or Treat". This is a community event where the congregation and committees come together to provide
safe trick-or-treating, at their decorated trunks in the parking lot for not only our church family kids, but
for the local community kids too. Afterwards, we move the party inside for fun games and snacks.
Tracy is looking for 2 people to step up to coordinate this event this fall. She will work with you this year, as
a training year, before the event is handed over. If no one steps up to take over as coordinator, this will be the final
year for Trunk or Treat.
In order to put together a successful Trunk or Treat event, we MUST have a decent amount of trunks
participating! That is where all committees, groups and members of the church come in. I am placing a sign-up on the
Narthex board. If you or your group (i.e. Missions, UMM, UMW, Trustees, Fellowship, SPRC, Nominat-
ing, Christian Ed, Finance, Worship, Mustard Seeds, Elderberries, Prayers & Patches, Bible Journaling,
Pickleball, Basketball, etc.) will commit to doing a trunk for this event, please sign up to participate.
If we don’t have at least 25 trunks committed by Sept 30th, this event will be cancelled.
Other items we need for this event is donated children and youth books. One of the stations we have inside is
a "Book Walk". It works just like a Cake Walk, but the prize for your number being picked is a book! Donated books
can be placed in the marked bin in the Fellowship Hall.
Here is hoping for a successful Trunk or Treat event for the kids this year! Tracy, Christian Ed Director.

Maya Angelou said, “Each person
deserves a day away in which
no problems are confronted, no
solutions searched for. Each of
us needs to withdraw from the
cares which will not withdraw
from us.” Similarly, when Jesus’ disciples were consumed
with ministry, he urged them, “Come with me by your-
selves to a quiet place and get some rest” (Mark 6:31).
The late days of summer might be just the time to seek
“a day away” not only from problems but even from
ministry. While serving God and others can be energizing,
we must balance work with rest. God set that example,
resting after creating the world; Jesus set that example,
calling his disciples away — not just alone, but with him —
to be refreshed.
Spend a relaxing day at a lake. Go on a scrapbooking
retreat or a leisurely hike with a friend. Find a monastery
that welcomes guests, and experience 48 hours of prayer
and silence there. Invite Jesus into that time and space.
And remember another message he shared: “Come to me,
all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you
rest” (Matthew 11:28, NIV).
