Village officials are consid- ering a change to the recycling program, which would elimi- nate the open red bins and re- place those with larger carts with lids and wheels. The Health and Recreation Committee met Jan. 20 to dis- cuss the proposed changes and responses to a survey about the recycling program. Of the 186 survey responses, most indicated they preferred using a 65-gallon recycling cart and bringing it to the curb to keep the waste collection fee the same, said Councilwoman and Committee Chairwoman Mary Ann Schwartz. With this option, Mariemont would save about $17,000 per year on its trash and recycling contract with Rumpke. The vil- lage currently pays about $284,000 for trash and recy- cling service, but residents also pay for waste collection. It costs $75 per year for de- tached homes or townhouses, and $45 per year for units, such as apartments, with a common collection point. Residents also have to attach a $2 sticker to trash cans for those to be col- lected. With the new program, resi- dents would have an option of a 36- or 65-gallon recycling cart, and Dean Ferrier, who repre- sented Rumpke at the meeting, said they’d aim for delivery of the new carts this spring. “The key was getting it to the curb … and we can offer this be- cause the labor cost is less,” he said. A Mariemont resident’s trash cans would still be collect- ed at the back of a residence, and there are no proposed changes to that program. One of the main reasons the village is proposing curbside recycling with lidded carts is to get rid of the open containers residents currently use. “We’ve gotten a lot of calls about rodents, and they’re not sanitary,” Mayor Dan Policas- tro said. “We want to get rid of the bins.” Schwartz, who lives in and represents the historic district near Maple, Oak and Chestnut streets, said rats have been a problem in that area. “Part of it is the open containers, and I think it’s key to have the lids (on the recycling carts),” she said. She’s concerned, however, that the larger carts would block the narrow lanes behind many of the townhouses and apartments in the historic dis- trict. “I don’t think taking it out front would be an option for four-family units,” she said. Councilwoman and Commit- tee member Maggie Palazzolo said some of the townhouses don’t have garages so the carts would sit out anyway. Also, she said, the connected buildings would mean residents in the middle townhouses would have to walk a block or two just to bring the carts to the curb. Ferrier said they might be able to get the smaller recy- cling truck through the lanes, but he’d have to check with the route supervisor, and they could find a solution for the his- toric district. By Lisa Wakeland [email protected] Mariemont will likely change its recycling program and get rid of these small bins. Rumpke has agreed to provide larger carts with wheels and lids if they are brought to the curb. LISA WAKELAND/THE COMMUNITY PRESS Trash would still be picked up from the back of residences WINTER WONDERLAND The Mariemont Community Church Memorial Chapel, on Cherry Lane in the village’s historic district, stands out in the snow. Completed in 1926, the chapel was built in the Norman architectural style of an English parish church. Its stone roof is believed to be the oldest roof in North America, and it was originally on a tithe barn built around 1300 in Calcot, England. LISA WAKELAND/THE COMMUNITY PRESS OAKLEY — Oakley may once again have a “Ball on the Square” celebration. Piper Fennimore Rogers, who along with her husband, Mark Rogers, organized previ- ous New Year’s Eve Ball on the Square events said another one is a possibility. “It was a fan- tastic party, (but) it’s a very expensive party to put on,” she said. Cost was a primary reason the event was not conducted this New Year’s Eve. Rogers, who is a member of the Oakley Community Coun- cil, said she had received a sig- nificant amount of feedback from people wondering why the event didn’t occur. Members of the Oakley Community Council said they had received inquiries as well. There was a lot of disap- pointment that it didn’t hap- pen,” said board member Ja- son Wilcoxon, who coordinates the community’s Oakley After Hours event. Rogers said previous Ball on the Square celebrations cost between $36,000 to $37,000. However, she said the event only brings in about $18,000. However, she said because of the community’s reaction it is once again being considered. “We are planning on having an exploratory meeting to de- termine if it’s feasibly possi- ble,” she said. She said the 2014/2015 Ball on the Square event, which would be the fourth, would be coordinated with the Oakley Chamber of Commerce. “We are going to do every- thing we can to make it hap- pen,” she said. “It will all de- pend on the financial support we get.” She said the exploratory meeting could happen in Feb- ruary. Rogers said she is also look- ing for feedback from the com- munity. Emails can be sent to markrogers20th@cin- ci.rr.com. A Forty-Day Journey of Transformation

from Death to Resurrection and New Life

On Ash Wednesday we began the season of Lent, a forty day journey of transformation, modeled after Jesus’ forty days in the desert. Just as Jesus’ journey was initiated by the Spirit, so is ours. Just as Jesus’ journey tested him, but ultimately strengththe desert more deeply convicted to walk his life’s path, so also we will hopefully emerge at the end of this Lenten season, more deeply convicted to walk our life path, to live out our life’s purpose. Just as Jesus’ journey led hiresurrected life, so also for us Lent is a fortyto those things in our lives which no longer serve us, in order that we can then rise, with Christo live new and resurrected lives.

In the early church the forty days of Lent were also a time of preparation for baptism. Converts to the Christian faith would spend the forty days of Lent immersed in a time of instruction, deepening their faith and spiritual practices, dying to their old ways of life, so that, on Holy Saturday, or Easter Eve, as Christ passed over from death to resurrected life, adults would be baptized, passing over, with Christ, from death to new and resurrected Life! Each year, Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday, we are invited to remember our baptisms, and in doing so, to pass over from death to new, resurrected Life in Christ.

Paul refers to this in Romans 6: verses 3

“Do you not know that all of us who have been baptizdeath? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with Christ in a a resurrection like his.”

Celebration of Creation: A Retreat for Men and Women at Casa del Sol, Ghost Ranch, Abiquiu, New MexicoApril 16-22, 2012 (April school vacation week)

This course will focus on sacred texts from various faith traditions which celebrate our Creator God in all God’s creation. The course will follow a retreat format. Each day will begin with an optional yoga practice for all ages and levels of practice, followed by breakfast. Our morning sessions will include morning prayer, then teaching, discussion, and activities based on sacred texts celebrating God’s creation from various faith traditions. During the afternoons, participants may use their free time to enter into the sacred text of the high desert itself, participating in optional group hikes or fieldtrips, as we immerse ourselves in the mystery of the breathtaking Ghost Ranch and nearby landscapes. In the evening we will gather back at Casa del Sol for Evening Prayer, and to process our day. The retreat begins with dinner at Ghost Ranch on Monday, April 16. It concludes with morning worship, led by Pastor Linda, in the spectacular Agape Chapel, on Sunday, April 22. Linda Forsberg, Newport, Rhode Island. March 2012

Confirmation Classes and Service:

Classes this month are March 7 and 21. The weekend of March 10-11 is our annual youth-led service. Our theme is “Destroy!” and we will work on the service at the March 7 class. All confirmands must participate in the Saturday evening worship and Sunday 9:00am worship. Only the sermon team needs to come to the Sunday 8:00am worship. However, we will all be rehearsing before the Saturday service together.

Because the youth service weekend is such an undertaking, it stands as our service project for the month! However, we are in the process of creating a food packaging drive for the local food pantries. This will be on a Sunday afternoon in the upcoming month or in April, and we will be working with the youth from Emanuel Church in West Warwick. I am looking for good dates for everyone, so please let me know what weekend might work.

Fellowship:

Last month we had a great movie night, and I would love to have another one. However, I’m thinking maybe we could go see the opening of Hunger Games! We could get a group together and buy advance tickets. The movie opens nationwide March 23, in case you’ve been living under a rock and didn’t know!

Also, the Nerd Herd is back in swing, and we had a great time at the RISD Art Museum last Sunday. We should choose a night to pick a new book. Anyone who loves reading and all things “nerdy” is welcome to join.

New Orleans and Fundraising:

The next youth breakfast is Sunday March 4, and we need lots of help! Also, our big event will be our May 19 Auction and Talent Show. We will be serving food cocktail style, with lots of Cajun dishes, and fantastic entertainment. Tickets and more information will be distributed in the upcoming confirmation classes.

We have seven youth and three adults registered for the New Orleans trip! We also have our plane tickets and hotel reserved. We are staying an extra day (coming back Monday) because it actually saves us money, but it also will give us a great opportunity to explore this fantastic city on our own!

Sincerely,

Carrie Koslofsky, Youth DirectorFirst Evangelical Lutheran Church

Please use MY money to helpyour neighbors in need!

My name is Alan Shawn Feinstein. For the past 14 years, I have been giving away $1 million each year to anti-hunger agencies throughout the country.

This year, I am doing it again…

WHATEVER YOU DONATE TO THIS AGENCY,I WILL ADD MONEY TO IT. THE MORE

YOU GIVE, THE MORE OF MY $1 MILLIONTHEY’LL GET—THANKS TO YOU!

Why am I doing this? Because I believe each of us was put here on earth to do what we can to help those in need. You got this letter because we feel that YOU believe that, too.

My money started this campaign but it is YOU who will help decide how many needy people in your city or town will be fed this year. All that will matter to us someday is what we did while we were here to help those who needed us.

This has become the greatest grass roots campaign ever to fight hunger in our country. Your donation makes you a partner in it with me!

We Are Needed Now!

Please give whatever you can - I will gladly add some of my money to yours. (My $1 million will be divided proportionately in full among the agencies receiving donations toward my offer.)

Thank you for sharing my heart, and the hope that—someday—no one will ever go hungry.

Sincerely Yours,

Alan Shawn Feinstein

Christ’s Cupboard Food Pantry has been blessed with many monetary donations recently, and we are very excited to be able to reach out to those in need in new ways. There will be two opportunities to reach out those in need in our community this month during Lent.

The first is a community meal we will host on Wednesday March 14th from 5-6:15consisting of soups, salad, bread, beverages, and dessert.

The second is a “First Annual Good Friday Brunch” on April 6th from 10-11:45.

This meal will be a light continental brunch before our Ecumenical Good Friday noon service and Stations of the Cross walk that we host every year. Both meals will be open to the community as well as our own church congregation. Free will donations will be accepted.

Our primary goal is to help those in need, and to also invite them to stay for the Wednesday Lenten message and also the Good Friday service and walk. If you would like to help with one or both meals, please contact Christine Kellerman 738-4353. Thank you all for your continued support of Christ’s Cupboard.
