DEFINICION Asthma is a chronic infammatory

disorder o the airways in which many cells and cellularelements play a role: in particular, mast

cells, eosinophils, T lymphocytes, macrophages, neutrophils,and epithelial cells. In susceptible

individuals, this infammation causes recurrent episodes owheezing, breathlessness, chest

tightness, and coughing, particularly at night or in the earlymorning. These episodes are

usually associated with widespread but variable airfowobstruction that is oten reversible either

spontaneously or with treatment. The infammation alsocauses an associated increase in the

existing bronchial hyperresponsiveness to a variety o stimuli.eversibility o airfow limitation

may be incomplete in some patients with asthma (EPR 1991;
