"12 Metre Intrepid Racing in Larchmont" - 24" x 30" - Oil on Linen

1 Interestingly, sometime before, Jim had bought a painting of a dory by the Canadian marine artist Jack L. Grey (1927 - 1981) at auction for $250. He sold it for $5,000 enabling him to make the down payment on the co-op. 2 One of the oldest one-class boats in the world, the Star is significant both for its long history as a successful racing boat but also because men associated with it revolutionized the concept of one-class racing. The Star made its debut in 1911 in the Memorial Day races held at the Harlem Yacht Club. (Established in the 19th Century on the East River in Harlem, New York City, it moved early in the Twentieth to City Island in the Bronx where the Star debut occurred.) The Star’s immediate predecessor was the Bug, a one-class boat designed earlier that century by William Gardner of New York City for Commodore “Pop” Corry who wanted a class that was affordable. But the

Bug proved too small and was a wet sailor so in the winter of 1910 the Commodore went back to Gardner who got one of his draftsmen, Francis Sweisguth, to design a larger version of the Bug. Originally gaff-rigged, the new boat, the Star, became very popular in Long Island Sound.

But many one-class designs were popular. What set the Star class apart occurred during the first decade of its introduction. Before 1920 there were neither international classes nor class organizations; there were not even any inter-club classes. Each yacht club had its own design of a boat, which raced locally, and that was all. Against this heterogeneous background George Elder conceived the idea of a unified organization with enough influence to administer the affairs of many fleets of the same class, not only in various harbors of Long Island Sound (which in itself would have been a novel idea), but all over the country

and eventually throughout the world. He created the Star Class Association and it transformed racing.

Another interesting aspect of the Star class was its evolution from its original gaff rig to its present rig. The gaff of the original Star was so tightly up against the mast that it did not take long before the same mainsail was tried out on a gaff-less mast. By the ’Twenties the shape of the sail – but not the square footage - changed from a long boom and short mast to a shorter boom and taller mast. In fact, the mast was so tall that it was stayed with spreaders, giving it the appearance of the newly invented Marconi radio tower and thus gave it the name that is still used today, the Marconi rig. In 1930 the Star Association formally adopted the Marconi rig.
