Committmentto Excellence

I would like to update all ASD members regardingthe ASD activities since our last Symposium inJune. The 2015 Symposium was a huge financialsuccess for ASD. without listing names, I wouldlike to thank all committee and board memberswho worked so tirelessly to help in ourSymposiums’ success. I am sure the terrific lineup of lecturers who presented at the symposiumhelped, as well as who wouldn’t want to come toChicago- The city of the Stanley Cup ChampionChicago Blackhawks! Some of the highlights of the 2015 year include:1. Development of ASD’s new power point

presentation designed to help educate coaches, athletic trainers, parents, athletes and fellowdentists on the risks and prevention oforofacial sports injuries.

2. updating the ASD position statements on bothmouthguard standards and smokeless tobaccowhich can be found on the website.

3. Launch of our first regional team dentistcourse which was held in Dallas. ASD realizesthat the team dentist course needs to be offeredmore frequently than just at the AnnualSymposium. with the expansion of ourrelationships with NATA and uSOC, it isevident that we need more certified dentists.

4. Improvement of the ASD website to allow ourmembers to be more interactive through ourmember discussion forums and memberresource library. The website also allows newmembers access to other members through ourmentorship program.

5. ASD authored articles in the special editiondedicated to Sports Dentistry in AGD’sGeneral Dentistry November/Decemberpublication. This came to fruition due to the

hard work of the committee and the authors.6. Enhancement of our ASD/NATA referral

program to connect certified team dentist withathletic trainers who need our dentalassistance. This is yet another reason why allmembers should complete the team dentistcourse. Quite often the athletic trainers areresponsible for assembling the medical teamsand very excited that ASD has certifieddentists willing to join the medical teams. wecontinue to educate the athletic trainersregarding dental injuries and the importance ofcustom fabricated mouthguards.

7. Treatment of uS Olympic athletes through ouraffiliation with uSOC. Certified ASD teamdentists have performed not only screenings onthe athletes at training facilities but many ASDmembers have performed dental procedures onsome of the athletes at their private offices.ASD is also exploring the possibility offabricating custom mouthguards on theathletes at an Olympic training facility.

8. Some ASD members were asked to attend theSpecial Olympics world Games this pastsummer in Los Angeles and perform dentalscreenings on the athletes. This venture grewfrom our relationship with Dr. Steve Pearlmanand his affiliation with Special Kids SpecialSmiles.

As you can see ASD has been quite busy and wewould like to invite all of our members toconsider getting involved and offer your talents toour winning team.

SincerelyJames R. Lovelace, DDS, FASDASD President

Concussions and ProperlyFitted Pressure Laminated

MouthguardsYears of Significance 1994 – 2005 – 2014 – 2015

The movie CONCuSSION was released December25th. I was impressed by the attendees viewing themovie this holiday Season. It was a mixture ofsenior citizens, young families and teenage athletes. As a former high school football quarterback, highschool and college football official, working Scoutfor Football Officials for the NFL, Pediatric Dentist, and author of articles on Sports Dentistry, I amconcerned about the concussion injuries and youth’sparticipation in contact athletic activities.

1994 - In the early Fall of 1994, I had a Saturday offfrom officiating in the Mid-American Conference(MAC). My wife and I attended the IADT meetingin San Diego, California. Arriving the night beforethe conference, we went to dinner in the hotel. Ourtable was next to another couple that spoke with aBritish accent.

The next day Dr. Ray Padilla said to me; “You havegot to meet this dentist from Australia. he has a newapproach to custom mouthguards that is better thanwe are making in America.” Needless to say, thedentist was Dr. Brett Dorney with his wife Di. (Thecouple from the next table the night before.) Themouthguard and technique he introduced to us and toAmerica that weekend was pressure lamination.

On Saturday afternoon of the conference, I took abreak to watch the university of Southern California(uSC) football game on television. I wanted to checkit out since I had been assigned to referee the NotreDame vs uSC game in the LA Coliseum on theFriday after Thanksgiving. I noticed that the uSCQB was not wearing a mouthguard. I knew that I wasgoing to be put on the spot if I did not enforce themandatory equipment rule when I refereed theND/uSC football game. I told Ray about it and hecontacted the head athletic trainer at uSC. A fewweeks later I was officiating the ND/uSC game.During the first time out, I noticed that the uSC QBwas not wearing a mouthguard. I stepped into thehuddle asked him where his mouthguard was. he

pulled it out of his pants. I told him not to embarrassme. "I am a dentist. You better wear it!"

It was a highly contested game. Bowl Invitationswere on the line. It was the only game on TV thatThanksgiving Friday night. It was a split crew ofofficials from the PAC-TEN and the MAC. we hadnever officiated together before.

The game ended in a 17 - 17 tie. It was the last majorcollege football game to end in a tie. The next yearthe NCAA went to overtime. Both teams got BowlGames. The QB for uSC wore his “Cut-Off” MGmost of the rest of the game after our time out talk.

That weekend at the IADT Meeting, in San Diego,Dr. Brett Dorney introduced Pressure LaminatedMouthguards to Dr’s Padilla and I. The Academy forSports Dentistry (ASD) encompassed the thoughtsand added the terms: “Properly Fitted and Properlyworn Mouthguard” as recommendations for ASD.

This chance meeting at the IADT meeting in 1994changed the attitudes and thinking of the Academy ofSports Dentistry and increased my awareness of thequality of mouthguards the football players werewearing on the fields.

2005 - The first controlled study was conductedlooking at high school football. high school athletesfrom 6 football teams were recruited to participate ina study to look at mouthguards and the incidence ofconcussion injury during the course of a season ofhigh school football. Three teams wore ProperlyFitted Pressure Laminated Mouthguard.s (LM).Three teams wore Over The Counter Mouthguards(OTCM).

2014 - It took nine years for the study from 2005 toget the information and findings published. Like themovie, we met resistance. Mouthguards could notpossibly make a difference in the concussion injury

situation. Articles had been published from datacollected from questionnaires over the Internet. Theauthors did not physically examine themouthguards the athletes were wearing at the timeof the concussion injury nor did they look at theMGs of the non-injured players. The conclusionreached was mouthguards did not make adifference. The thrust of research was concentratedon helmet research. That thinking remains.however, the movie and this article, published inGeneral Dentistry, will possibly stimulate a newdirection in research.

In this controlled study, the authors found thatwearing custom made properly fitted LM MG’swith>3 mm. thickness in the posterior occlusal areastatistically reduced the incidence of MTBI/concussion injury when compared to OTC MG’sduring a season of play.

2015 CONCLuSION - There are many variablesthat contribute to the concussion injury. Afterviewing the movie CONCuSSION, more researchand rule changes are needed to make the game saferfor the athletes at all levels that play the greatAmerican team sport of football. Also other contactsports would benefit from further research.

Jack winters, DDS historian Academy for Sports Dentistry

Over the Christmas holidays I had the pleasureof going to the theater with my family to see themovie, Concussion. we really enjoyed themovie. Our 12 year old son, is a quarterbackand kicker on a youth tackle football team.Although we are always fully aware of thepossibility of Andrew getting a concussionand/or some other injury, it was an eye openerto see how devastating some of the long termeffects of concussions can be. hopefully, thismovie can act as an impetus for further rulechanges in football and other contact sports.

I feel blessed to be part of such a wonderfulprofession. In general, I find that most dentists arevery giving of both their time and money when itcomes charitable causes and volunteering. Growingup as the son of a dentist I saw how much my fathervolunteered both in our community and with ourprovincial dental association. he never talked to memuch about volunteering but his actions inspiredme. It wasn’t until I graduated from dental schoolthat I realized how much better our world is when

people volunteer. It is very heart warming and somuch fun to volunteer. You feel that, in a very smallway, you have helped to make the world a betterplace. I currently coach three different sports –football, speed swimming, and basketball. I find itvery rewarding to help our youth to become betterpeople. Recently my wife, son, and I have beenhelping 10 Somali orphans who recently moved toCanada. I have offered to help one of the dentists atthe university of Manitoba Dental Schoolcoordinate dental services for these children.

Three members of the ASD, Dr. wayneNakamura, Ms. Lesley McGovern, and Dr. JeffLloyd volunteered at the 2015 Special Olympicsworld Summer Games healthy Athletes Village. They thoroughly enjoyed their experience. whileyou are in Baltimore in June I encourage you tospeak with them and see how you can help outwith Special Olympics Special Smiles program.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone inBaltimore!

SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD GAMES 2015 HEALTHY ATHLETES

Dr. Steve Pearlman (Special Olympics Special SmileFounder and global clinical director) invited the ASDto help with the Special Olympics healthy AthleteVillage. This past July, Jeff Lloyd, Lesley McGovernand myself, wayne Nakamura, were honored towitness and represent the ASD at the ribbon cuttingand opening of the 2015 Special Olympics worldSummer Games healthy Athletes Village. TheSpecial Olympics healthy Athletes Village is part ofthe Special Olympics program that offers healthservices and information to athletes in need. Thisvillage housed facilities for seven disciplines whereSpecial Olympics athletes, their care givers andcoaches, could receive free examinations in podiatry, physical therapy, health promotion, audiology, sportsphysical examinations, vision and dentistry. Thethree of us were able to volunteer and participate inthe Special Smiles tent to provide dental screenings, oral health information and education, and delivery ofmouthguards for those athletes requesting them.Individuals seeking dental treatment were able to becared for by the local dental schools which providedstaffing and mobile facilities for dental treatment suchas dental prophylaxis, restorations and extractions.

while some may ask what does this have to do withsports, they should know that Special Olympicsmission to raise awareness about the abilities ofpeople with intellectual disabilities uses sports as the

vehicle to showcase the skills and dignity of athletes, overcoming everyday barriers and bringingcommunities together to see and be a part of thetransformative power of sports. Special Olympicsbelieves in our world there are millions of people withdifferent abilities not disabilities. Special Olympicsbelieves many valuable lessons can be learned fromsports, some of which are the joy in learning to dreamwhen we train and strive for a goal, the selfdetermination, and willpower to keep going when wesuffer roadblocks, setbacks and losses beforereaching our goals.

On a personal note, the time spent away from mypractice and volunteering for this event was morethan compensated by the experience of being able towitness not only the athletes’ unbridled joy and sense

of accomplishment of reaching their goals ofparticipating in the world games, but also theuniversal feelings of goodwill and giving ofeveryone associated with the games from fellowathletes, coaches, and volunteer staff, to the fans inattendance. I was proud to be able to be present andwitness such a memorable and positive experienceand also being able to give back through the use ofmy profession. I would encourage everyone to getinvolved with Special Olympics Special Smiles orsome other charitable function, as the old saying of“you get more back than what you give” was trulymy experience. I would like to mention that topossibly facilitate and enhance this ability tovolunteer, the Academy for Sports Dentistry Boardof Directors and Special Smiles, through the supportand assistance from Dr. Perlman, is in the process ofresearching a possible affiliation to providevolunteers and dental consultants for Special

Olympics events both domestically andinternationally.

At this time I would like to publicly acknowledgeDr. Perlman’s role in bringing to light the problemsfacing individuals with intellectual disabilities withregards to dental health care disparities as it cannotbe praised enough and also to thank him for all ofhis hard work and dedication in this endeavor. Theassociation between Special Olympics and SpecialSmiles was made possible through Dr. Perlman’ssuccessful treatment and care for RosemaryKennedy (of the famous Kennedy family). As adevelopment of this relationship with Rosemary’slegal guardians, Eunice Shriver and Senator TedKennedy, Dr. Perlman was able to bring clarity andawareness to the significant health disparities thatexist for people with intellectual disabilities to theKennedy family and was granted a request to alignthe Special Smiles program with the SpecialOlympics healthy Athletes’ role in becoming thelargest global public health organization dedicatedto serving people with intellectual disabilities.
