Improvements

Attract and serve a more diverse set of users• Provide a destination for older, local and regional skaters (35 yrs and older) for increased passive

supervision and reasons to spend in downtown Lakewood.• Provide young, local skaters a balanced skate park. Skaters desire both Street Style elements

(ledges and stairs) and round-wall Transition elements (bowls, half pipes, quarter pipes).

Transition skating is more similar to surfing and can be performed with less impact and later into life. Many young skaters are more attracted to Transition skating first and must travel farther to find private or public facilities. Transition skaters travel across a region to seek out quality facilities and Lakewood currently does not offer a destination for this audience.

During summer months, the heat saps energy from users and spectators with no shade for respite. Skaters and spectators have brought personal shade structures during skate camps and regular hours to escape the heat. Young skaters have crowded in the shadow of the Skate House to get a break from the heat.

Improvements

Extend the operational conditions of the park• Provide Shade for spectators and skaters to allow more skating

during the high temperatures in June through September.• Provide Extended Skateable Area to skate safely during peak

hours of activity.• Provide Covered Area to skate during light rain or snow.

Improvements

Decrease or maintain costs of maintenance• Extended Skate Area will replace grass/mowable areas and trimmed fenceline• Brick Paver Donor area will replace mud prone, grassy area on south end - easier to clean/

sweep• Bowl Element area replaces grassy mound and handles drainage in-place instead of the erosion

caused by current drainage that needed repairs. Bowl ties-in directly to existing drain.

Improvements

Improve overall visual presentation of Lakewood Park• Tall Shade Structures add visual elements to improve the look and feel of west side of Lakewood Park.• Pavers and Tinted Concrete provide more vibrant presentation compared to plain concrete.• Paved areas replace muddy, well worn areas - easier to sweep and clean garbage.
