ARTsmart New MexicoHooked on Helping

When was the last time someone helped you out?

I reflect on that question each time I’m asked to write something for ARTsmart. Luckily, I get help from the ARTsmart board and staff, each of whom is dedicated to improving the lives of New Mexico’s kids through the arts.

As the president of ARTsmart New Mexico, I want to thank Valerie Plame for helping us out. Valerie agreed to be the first ARTfeast honorary chair, plus she donated a fabulous auction item to our Saturday event (page 13). Valerie’s credits are widely known, including her two Vanessa Pierson spy-thriller novels. She is also a mother of two children and an activist in Global Zero. ARTsmart applauds Plame’s vision of a nuclear-free world and thanks her for inspiring others to support ARTsmart’s goal of ensuring that our young people have the opportunity to explore, experience, and engage in the visual arts.

I’m excited to share with you several other significant changes in our annual ARTfeast fundraiser. First of all, don’t panic when you learn that the popular Edible Art Tour is not on our winter itinerary! We’ve moved this “gaze and graze” stroll to the month of June, doubled its evenings and gallery/restaurant pairings, and added an exciting celebration of the arts that involves parents and kids. Read more about it on page 17.

Our Friday evening cocktail party and Saturday gala dinner are more fun than ever, with not only great food and drink, but an opportunity to support ARTsmart programs through your attendance and purchase of a variety of artworks by both professional and student artists. We especially thank Honorary Artist Greg Reiche for mentoring Santa Fe High School students and donating a commanding sculpture to our Saturday auction (pages 9 and 13).

Lastly, I’m delighted that Keller Williams Realty has become the new organizer of the Art of Home Tour. They have teamed with First Mortgage Company and Western Art & Architecture magazine to underwrite this admission-free event featuring 12 unique homes–learn more on page 15.

ARTsmart programs are designed to help today’s youth become the creative problem-solvers of tomorrow. Thank you for helping us make that a reality. Connie Axton, ARTsmart President

Valerie Plame, ARTfeast Honorary Chair

Greg ReicheHonorary ArtistGreg Reiche (born 1957) says that if he had a motto it would be to create artworks that “surprise, inspire, and/or soothe the viewer, drawing them into a personal conversation with not just the work but the space it occupies as well.”

This interactive experience is am-plified by the Santa Fe sculptor’s materials. “I’ve always been drawn to the strength, solidity, and primal quali-ties of stone,” he explains, adding that to this ubiquitous earth element he marries metal and glass in “collabora-tive arrangements. Glass is suspended liquid that brings light and life to stone, while metal exhibits strength, beauty, and malleability.”

UNLIMITED POSSIBILITIES. For his ARTsmart project, Reiche worked with students at Santa Fe High School, sharing his lifelong fascination with

ancient arts, cultures, and the physical sciences. “Circles, squares, triangles, spirals, and arcs are simple, powerful, iconic forms that human beings have been using for tens of thousands of years. As such, they resonate with us all on a subconscious level. Within these elements lie unlimited possibilities,” he says. Reiche, who is represented by Pippin Contemporary, has donated his sculpture titled Tuntawu Offering to the Saturday night auction (page 13). Standing just over four feet tall, it is constructed of sandstone and steel, complemented by an “eternal stream” of chevron-cut glass that sparkles in response to changing light. Whether displayed indoors or out, the sculpture’s seductive presence speaks of an ageless continuum that is close to the heart.

HAPPY HOUR. ARTfeast weekend kicks off with two hours of food, drink, fashion, and a lively atmosphere enhanced by the New Mexico School for the Arts Jazz Ensemble.

PM WATERLILY. Patricia Michaels displays an array of fashions and textile designs, as well as offering a selection of her scarves and clothing throughout the evening (20 percent of sales benefit ARTsmart!). Michaels, who is based in Taos, was the first Native American to compete on Project Runway, where she received the 2013 runner-up title. In November 2014 her work garnered the prestigious Arts and Design Award from the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian.

COCKTAILS & HORS D’OEUVRES. Though it is debated whether cocktail parties were

invented in London or St. Louis, they take their name from appetizers and classic mixed drinks. Walter Burke Catering serves epicurean fare complemented by cocktails by creative mixologists, along with sparkling and white wines chosen by sommelier Kate Collins.

ARTFUL OFFERINGS. Bid on a set of 12 unique salad/dessert plates (page 19) inspired by Kandinsky’s color theories and a wine trip to Oregon’s pinot noir countryside. Also available are batik-dyed silk scarves made by De Vargas Middle School students, who were inspired by International Folk Art Market celebrity Gasali Adeyemo from Nigeria.

HONORARY ARTIST. ARTsmart proudly rec-ognizes Greg Reiche, whose mesmerizing Tuntawu Offering is part of the live auction. Reiche mentored Santa Fe High School students whose sculptures are for sale, proceeds from which are divided between the student artists and their schools.

CUISINE & WINES. A three-course gourmet dinner prepared by Peter Dent, owner of Adobo Catering, and his chefs Alain Jorand and Lisa Sanderson, is paired with select fine wines chosen by sommelier Kate Collins. A dessert buffet caps off this evening of decadent dining and spirited giving.

QUICK DRAW. Watch artists at work and bid on their artworks. Two student artists, along with renowned professionals, create unique items just for ARTsmart: Alison Keogh (William Siegal

Gallery), Jami Tobey (Waxlander Gallery), Roger Williams (Joe Wade Fine Art), and Fran Larsen (Manitou Galleries and ARTfeast’s 2009 Honor-ary Artist).

AUCTIONS. Live and silent auctions include an array of fine art, travel and adventure packages, food and wine excursions, and a once-in-a-life-time opportunity to have dinner with and be-come a character in Valerie Plame’s next novel. Also on the block are the winners of the “I Made It!” plate competition, which come in a variety of new shapes and sizes (pages 18-21).

HOMAGE TO KANDINSKY Amber Paz-Csibi, art teacher at El Camino Real Academy, inspired her fifth-grade students to create this set of 12, 8-inch plates by studying a painting titled Squares with Concentric Circles by Russian abstractionist Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944). “My goal was a set of plates that when assembled has the impact of Kandinksy’s painting,” Paz-Csibi says. “The kids worked in watercolors

for their placemats, and I encouraged them to choose their favorite colors in exploring the visual and emotional effects of colors placed side by side. The plate project is so popular that the kids can’t wait to get into fifth grade to be a part of the process. And I enjoy it as much as they do!” This plate set is auctioned at Friday’s It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere (page 11).
