Rockwell Annual Community Lunch

Volunteer Corner Sharon has been a volunteer reception-ist at the Rockwell Centre for over six years. She originally

lived in the flats on the Rockwell site but came to us through Shipley Volunteer Bureau after moving away from the estate. You can meet Sharon every Wednesday on reception, she always

has a warm welcome for you, dealing with phone calls, post, photocopying and general administration. Sharon has been married for twenty years, has six children and one grandchild

but still manages to fit volunteering time in! She enjoys meeting new people and

is very keen to support vulnerable people wherever possible. “ Before volunteering at Rockwell I

had little confidence and low self-esteem. My experience here has made me a different person, I am much more self-confident and have made lots of new friends. I really feel part

of a team that has a lot to offer and make a real difference in vulnerable people’s lives. I have also managed to

lose seven stone with lots of encour-

agement from everyone at the Centre which has boosted my self image”

Making new Friends at Rockwell During the Christmas period, Rockwell Centre staff and an army of volunteers gave up their time to prepare, cook and serve a Christmas Dinner for elderly isolated people within BD2 and BD10. A special thank you to everyone who helped to make the event a great success and Sainsbury's Supermarket, Greengates who donated vouchers and mince pies. Also BMDC East Committee for their grant support.

H i everyone, it

seems no time since we were celebrating our first Thorpe Edge Carols – which was great by the way – and now we’re ready to dig into our

chocolate eggs!! Easter for us at St John’s is really important. We celebrate because we believe that Jesus overcame death and is alive for all time. God’s love is greater than death. This victory means that new life for all believers is a reality! How about you – do you have reason to be hopeful? I pray you do and would love to chat to you about it sometime. Remember St John’s is your church and you’re welcome any time. God Bless

Mary Winter

One hundred and eighty local people took part in the Rockwell Annual Event held during half-term. There was something for all ages including creative arts, bird box making, information stalls, pizza making, theatre workshop, apple pressing and a hot meal. The day included short presentations from the Little Gardeners, Rockwell Me-Time Group , Friendship Group, Little Chefs and the Young Leaders project. It also featured an Annual Review of the work of Thorpe Edge Community Project including nominations for the Management Committee.. The organisation is facing a very challenging year ahead with severe financial cuts in the pipeline. The event proved to be a real success having a unique intergenerational approach that created a good atmosphere and a real sense of community.

Andrea and Usman, University of Bradford Occupational Therapy Students, talking at our AGM about their role emerging placement at the Rockwell centre. This is their final placement prior to graduating and qualifying as Occupational Therapists. During their time here they have researched, designed, developed and are currently delivering a 4 week evidence based anxiety management programme that will continue to be delivered in the community in the future.
