Ἀριστοτέλης• Aristotle was a Greek philosopher, a student of

Plato and teacher of Alexander the Great.• Together with Plato and Socrates, Aristotle is

one of the most important founding figures in Western philosophy.

• His major areas of interest were: physics, poetry, theater, music, logic and philosiphy.

• He was born 384 BC and died 322 BC.• His first name was Tim.• Haha, just kidding, I had you going though.

Cont’d• While Aristotle was very brilliant, he was also

completely inaccurate a lot of the time.• For instance, he believed that the everything in the

universe was composed of 5 elements:

Air Earth Water Fire

EtherEther being a mystical energy that the heavens were created from.

Elements• He felt that everything moved according to what

elements it was composed of.• For instance, fire always goes up and earth always

goes down.• This proved amazingly accurate when predicting what

a rock will do when dropped in some water.• But also proved horribly useless in more complicated

calculations, such as predicting change in momentum in a moving body passing beyond the edge of a black hole!

• Metaphysics investigates principles of reality transcending those of any particular science. It is concerned with explaining the fundamental nature of being and the world.

• This means major questions like: is there a creator?

how real is our reality?and

do we really exist?

categories:Ontology Natural Theology Universal

The study ofbeing and

existence.

The study of God or Gods.

Science

The study of the basic fundamentals of life.

In each one of these areas there lies hundreds of theories, most without answers still to this day.

Question?• Let’s add a little fiery debate.• Suppose that one is sitting at a table, with an apple in front of

him or her; the apple exists in space and in time, but what does this statement indicate?

• Could it be said, for example, that space is like an invisible three-dimensional grid in which the apple is positioned? Suppose the apple, and all physical objects in the universe, were removed from existence entirely. Would space as an "invisible grid" still exist?

• Fraser believed it would not, arguing that without physical objects, "space" would be meaningless because space is the framework upon which we understand how physical objects are related to each other. Chris, on the other hand, argued for an absolute "container" space.

Our thoughts

• Chris:• Aristotle is a pretty cool dude, he was thousands of years

ahead of his time and even now people still don’t fully understand his methods.

• I think everyone should take a couple minutes of their day to think about how amazing this universe (real or not) that we live in is!

• That way people would take less for granted and really appreciate what they have in life.

• As for being real or not? I asked my mom and she said the smell drifting from my room was definitely not an illusion. So I guess that settles it?

Our thoughts

• Fraser:• Aristotle is one of those geniuses that saw the world in a

different view. A fake reality.

• I don’t know if I totally believe his theories, maybe out of fear, or maybe they just don’t make enough sense.

• Either way, I see it that we are stuck where we are now.• In whatever universe or dimension this is we can’t leave it. • So why not make the best of it, instead of spending your life

trying to prove a chair is not real?
