• With a population of 12.2 million people, Buenos Aires has become the world’s tenth largest metropolitan complex, with approximately 35 percent of the country’s population residing in the greater Buenos Aires conurbation. Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, is also the country’s chief seaport and its industrial, commercial, and social center.

Several features of the urban infrastructure are visible in this near-vertical photograph—runways of airports, and highways and railroads radiating from the central part of the city, which is located near the waterfront. South of downtown, the Matanza River flows northeastward, emptying into the Rio de la Plata.

• Situated on the southwestern end of the Rio de la Plata at the mouth of the Paraná and Uruguay Rivers and the northeastern edge of the pampas (Argentina’s most productive agricultural region), Buenos Aires has access to south-central South America and the rest of the world. The city has become the distribution hub and trading center for a large portion of southern South America.

Rio De La Plata/Buenos Aires: The Argentine capital of Buenos Aires, known as the Paris of the southern hemisphere, is the gray area upper center, with the satellite university city of La Plata to its upper left.

Upholding History

• The museum was once the home of the Bazán family and was the site of the signing of the declaration of the United Provinces of Argentina on July 9, 1816

• The house (from the Independence museum), built around a large courtyard, contains period furniture, including the bedroom typical of the period, as well as documents and other artifacts

• This monument, dedicated to San Martin's army, the Ejercito de los Andes, commemorates the heroic actions of the General and his troops

• Shaded walks and a monument to General Jose de San Martin tempts strollers to relax and remember the rich history of Mendoza

Historical Argentina

• This colonial chapel is a reminder of the regions's roots, going back in history past colonial times to the indigenous people who once lived in the area

• At 22834 ft, or 6960 m, Argentina's Cerro Aconcagua is among the world's highest mountains and is the highest peak of the Western Hemisphere, presenting a challenge to climbers and trekkers

• The Uspallate valley is beautiful and the traditional route to Chile. The Pan American highway now makes the route up and over Uspallata pass an easy one, but it wasn't so when San Martin's army made their way through here
