July 01, 2008 Demotion DinnerJune 25, 2008 Gender, War, and Peace

Can we put an end to war? Yes, according to behavioralbiologist Judith Hand. Dr. Hand is the author of "Woman,Power, and the Biology of Peace" and the founder of A WorldWithout War. She will discuss the connections among biology, biochemistry, and aggression.

Arline Curtiss, who spoke to our group in April, has said aboutDr. Hand's work: "Everybody speculates, in general, philosophically, if Homo sapiens will ever be free from war. Thisis the first time anybody has actually figured out, specifically, biologically, how we might avoid it in the future."

Dr. Hand earned her Ph.D. in biology from UCLA. Anevolutionary biologist, her areas of specialization includeanimal behavior, ornithology, and primatology. After completinga Smithsonian Postdoctoral Fellowship at the National Zoo inWashington, D.C., she returned to UCLA as a researchassociate and lecturer. She is a member of a number ofprofessional organizations among them the InternationalSociety for Human Ethology (ISHE), the American Associationfor the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the AmericanOrnithologists Union (AOU), and San Diego ProfessionalWriters (SDPW).More information...

May 07, 2008 Earthquake risks in developing countriesBrian Tucker of GeoHazards Int'l will tell us about steps that canbe taken to minimize the damages from earthquakes beforethey happen.

Brian writes: The earthquake risk in developing countries islarge and growing rapidly. Unless something is done to reduceit, developing countries will suffer human and economic lossesfar greater than these countries have experienced in the past.Given the “shrinking” of the world, these losses will affectdeveloped countries as well. GeoHazards International (GHI) isa Palo Altobased, nonprofit organization that has attempted toreduce the death and suffering caused by earthquakes in theworld’s most vulnerable communities, through advocacy, preparedness, and mitigation. Disaster response, recovery andreconstruction, which attract so much attention and resourcesafter earthquakes strike, are not the work of GHI. Instead, GHIworks before earthquakes to raise awareness, strengthen localinstitutions, and launch various mitigation activities, particularlyin schools and hospitals. This is how to reduce death, sufferingand economic losses. GHI and its partners around the worldhave achieved some success: because of our work, thousandsof school children are safer, hundreds of cities are now awareof their risk, the seismic hazard of dozens of cities have beenassessed, and numerous local organizations are more capableto manage their communities’ earthquake risk. But there isdisturbing evidence that the rate at which earthquake riskmanagement is improving, globally, is woefully inadequate. AsGHI continues its work to improve risk management indeveloping countries, it has launched an effort to recruit newallies, such as the Rotary Clubs, for ideas and support.More information...

March 26, 2008 The early days of Arabian OilThe world was forever changed when American geologists andengineers in the 1930s and 1940s discovered oil in SaudiArabia and developed the Middle Eastern oil industry.

Tim Barger, the publisher of"Discovery! The Search for Arabian Oil" will discuss the birth ofthe Saudi oil industry and its implications that continue toresonate to this day.

In 1955, Aramco (the Arabian American Oil Company)commissioned Wallace Stegner to write a narrative account ofthe creation and development of the oil industry in SaudiArabia. The manuscript was shelved until 1967, when it wasunearthed and published in 14 installments of "Aramco World."An abridged version was published in Lebanon in 1971, but itremained unpublished in the United States until September2007.

In "Discovery! The Search for Arabian Oil," Stegner chronicledthe construction of the first wells, the political and corporatetussles, and the collaboration across cultures. It's a tale thatincludes Saudi princes, American geologists, mechanics, desert guides, British nobility and a cast of colorful characters.

Stegner (19091993), who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1972 for"Angle of Repose," was the author of more than 30 books. Hewas a writing professor at Stanford University when Aramcohired him to write the narrative account of the oil venture's earlydays.
