FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS – FEBRUARY 2014
What happens to the existing building? The current club house will be demolished to make way for the new building.
When will it happen? At this stage, we are expecting the current building to be demolished/closed in
April/May 2014.
How will the club continue to operate?
How will it impact my participation/membership
with the club
The plan is to develop temporary facilities to the north of the current club rooms.
This will include ensuring members still have access to storage, gym, social
administration, change rooms. The temporary facilities are budgeted for in the
total project cost. We have a sub committee working on this at the moment. We
have some great discussions with Clancys who are prepared to let the club use
the undercroft for the gym, office and storage. We are looking at sea containers
for the balance of other essential equipment.
What are we doing for change rooms? The plan is to utilise the existing public change rooms located beneath Clancy’s.
Some work will need to take place to improve the standard.
What will happen regarding storage of
members/club equipment?
The majority of the club equipment will be stored under and next to Clancys.
Some equipment may need to be stored off site.
Will there be gym space and equipment? Yes – we are working through the logistics to make this happen.
How will the club do X, Y & Z during transition? The majority of the club’s activities will still operate in the same way, however
the storage of equipment, meeting rooms etc will be different. We will still patrol
at City Beach and will still conduct club beach activities (e.g. training, Nippers,
swims etc) at the same location.
For how long? We are expecting the club to require temporary facilities for approximately 18
months - 2 years. This time will obviously depend on the progress of the
building.
Have we gained or lost It will be different. It will be better. The club will be receiving a brand new
building that is largely financed by sources other than the club. It will be a great
building. The club will be much better off as it will allow us to implement our
business plan/strategic plan. The business plan will ensure the club is a great
place to be and will be financially viable.
What size will the club be The Town of Cambridge went to tender (gain quotes) on two sizes. The original
size (1610m2) and the larger size (1790m2). The current area of the club is
1480m2
We have as part of the lease another 174m2 of courtyard and we have
negotiated with Council for a Facilities Agreement for club use of the apron and
paved area.
NEW CLUBROOMS - CITY OF PERTH SLSC
3
What are/were the planning issues we had and
still have?
The majority of the planning issues are the responsibility of the Town of
Cambridge. While these planning issue are relevant, the Town have worked
hard to address them in a proactive manner.
What the club needs to fund? The funding model for the new club rooms is as follows
ToC $5.05m
CSRFF $0.95m
Lotterywest $0.95m provided to the club
Club $0.2m by the club from fundraising
The club will also fund the fitout, temporary facilities from fundraising and cash
reserves. This amount will be clarified in the near future.
Why do we want/need to raise more funds? It is important that the new facilities are of a suitable quality to enable the club to
operate at a high standard. Let’s face it – the current facilities are tired and worn
out. Any extra funding that the club can generate will go towards ensuring the
finished facility is built to a very high standard with an expanded social, change
room and storage capacity.
Where we are at with fund raising and how the
club intends to meet its funding targets.
The Town has committed $5.05million to the new club rooms.
The Town/club has also been successful in gaining $950,000 in funding from the
State Government through the CSRFF Fund
The Club has successfully applied for $950,000 from Lotterywest.
The Capital Raising Campaign currently has over $360,000 in donations/pledges
with a goal of $650,000.
The Club has an additional $200,000 in a building fund.
What members can do? Members can get involved in the fund raising in a number of ways.
Talk toTony Taylor – 0488 180 175, Dean Hely – 0419 947 646 or Robert Harper - 0411 881 959 about how you can make a fully tax deductible Capital Donation to be applied strictly to the building/fit out of the new building and provide an ongoing source of income to offset future capital expenditure maintenance.
Support all fund-raising initiatives being undertaken by various groups of club members. (eg boaties, nippers, beach competitors, club supporters etc.)
Identify potential donors
Donate yourself
Will the club pay rent in the future The club will not pay rent for the new facility.
Does the club have to pay power and water Yes – the club will continue to pay for its own water, power, waste removal, gas.
These costs have been incorporated into the business planning/model for the
new facility.
4
Does the council subsidize any ongoing costs for
the club
The Town will receive an annual grant of $25,000 once we take up the new
lease in the new facility. The club will pay 1/3 of maintenance costs and the
Town will pay 2/3 ($58,000 approx).
Is there a sinking fund for the maintenance of the
clubrooms and who pays for that
The Club will make an annual contribution to a maintenance fund in accordance
with the Town’s club facility maintenance policy. This amount is expected to be
$29,000. These costs have been incorporated into the business planning/model
for the new facility.
How can I find out more information? Keep an eye on the club website.

In an earlier edition of the newsletter we learnt some amazing things about our club captain John “Garbo” Leivers.
Not surprisingly Garbo continues to add to his folklore. Our fearless Club Captain, Legend and Master Sweep - has
been at it again!
With the States and AUSSIES upon us what better way to prepare to do battle than to hear of another of our
Garbo’s fine feats!
The story goes something like this....
A boatie was having a post Rottnest Solo Swim chat one morning with her paddler extraordinaire - another Master
Sweep at the Floreat Café. Although they are both boaties we will call them swimmer and paddler in this story.
Seated at their regular table, No. 30, the paddler noticed Garbo riding home on his bike from the club and beckoned
him over.
They of course became involved in a long and intense discussion involving one of the important things in life – Surf
Boats - when swimmer happened to glance down to see a snake slither past paddler’s foot at the base of the
limestone wall, near where they were seated.
(Some weeks earlier they had seen a fairly large dugite slither by on the steps to the café, after one of their
regular training swims, so there was reason for caution!)
No sooner had the swimmer managed to scream, “Is that a snake?" Garbo leapt into action trying to grab the
slithery creature with his bare hands. The snake was at first determined not to be caught and gave Garbo a nip.
Paddler and swimmer had moved far enough away to be of no help but Garbo persisted with his efforts to catch the
snake - of course without harm. After a brave battle, Garbo had overpowered the creature and managed to place it
in a calming trance, enabling the frightened pair to come closer to capture some photos.
The story quickly circulated among the boaties with no surprises from
the group regarding Garb’s actions, with one boatie asking the obvious
question - “I'm assuming he then ate it?”
No not this time – Garb, lover of nature, quietly placed the snake
at a secret location in the bush
In the words of Boat Captain Bruce Lilburne,
I think the order is - God, Garbo and The Stig
Move over David Attenbough!

On Saturday 1st March, a bunch of enthusiastic senior club members braced a very hot day to compete at Trigg
Beach for the State Maters. Competitors were looking at this event as a good lead up to the AUSSIES which will
be contested on Monday 31st March and Tuesday 1st April for the masters. Many medals were won by City with all
results available at

The Jungle Night turned out once again to be a true City party with perfect weather, venue and the
balcony to cool off after getting "hot" on the dance floor. There was a fantastic crowd who went to so
much trouble dressing up and great City clubbies to make the event happen.
Big thanks to Chris and Pam Murphy, Gabby, Britt Houghton, Meags, Jess, Colin and Ali Slattery and Lisa
Dwyer for her fantastic photos. To Yellsy, once again our DJ, made the night happen and to James for
being our “roadie", organizing all the sound gear setup.
We took a few weekends to transform the hall into the jungle. For those of you, who saw it, am sure you
will agree we have some very creative, talented girls.
Thanks again to everyone who supported the event; we hope you had a great time!!

Our March Past squad is approaching the State Championships with renewed confidence. With very good
attendances at training sessions, we continue to refine the specific marching sections required of top teams. We
have been placed fourth in all the competitions this season before slipping to fifth at Fremantle, a reflection on our
season’s policy of ensuring that all members had opportunities to march in carnivals.
Our journey started in June with only one member with prior marching experience, and although picking up another
experienced member, everyone else has started from scratch. We have had the use of a full time “band master” in
Colin Slattery, with other volunteers taking film and photos of the various competitions, filling in for Colin and
assisting me with coaching tasks.
We are looking forward to marching at both the States and Aussies and carrying the club flag and continuing our
traditions.
Everyone hard at training
We hear from another of our great Patrol Captains - Shelby Warren, Patrol Captain of
Team 13 - R Somerford
How long have you been a captain for?
This is my first year of being a captain. I took the big step up at the beginning
of the season, but I have been a Vice Captain for about 3 seasons.
Shelby, left, with her sister Danica
Why do you enjoy being a patrol captain?
No tower duties!!!!!! (Clearly the best thing)
What do you think about the Champion Patrol Competition?
I think it is an awesome competition! I did it once, training was heaps of fun and you also get to work in a team. So it
not only fun but you get to work on your team work skills as well.
What is one of your best experiences on patrol?
I don’t really have a best experience, but every patrol - something else makes it fun.
What makes a good patrol member?
A good patrol member is someone that gets up and does things and doesn't just lie around and work on their tan. It’s
someone who offers to go up to the tower or someone who just gets up and asks to do a roving patrol.

On the Australia Day Weekend a big group of boaties headed down south. Most of the group stayed out at Dan
Keirath’s Family Farm (big thanks to the family for that) some in the noisy caravan park and a small but soft group
stayed in a chalet which was very handy on Sunday arvo for showers and pre party drinks.
Saturday was the best day surf wise and all the crews were able to get out and crack a small but fun wave. We had 4
boat crews go down - 2 ladies and 2 mens. One of the men’s crew had about 200 years of boat rowing experience and
it shone out on Saturday when we were catching waves. The sun went away and the wind came up on Sunday so it was
not the best conditions to row in but our crews did very well. Then the wind dropped and the sun came out for the
after carnival festivities as you will see in the photos - we did enjoy ourselves.
Nipper parents, Boaties and other clubs had a great time on the balcony overlooking the bay at the Denmark Surf
Club.
Summing up the Denmark Country Carnival –
WHEN CAN WE GO BACK AND DO THAT AGAIN :)))))))))))))
On Saturday 1st February 3 crews went up to Sorrento for a round of the Sunset Sprints. Not the best conditions
with a very fresh south westerly blowing, 12 crews had 3 races each and were happy when it was decided that that
was enough.
That’s about us up to date for now people.
Don’t forget that States and Aussies are just around the corner so train hard!
If anyone has any “old” pictures and stories to share with our newer and younger members that will help provide
some sense of our club’s great history, please feel free to send to the office - [email protected]
We can include this in our future newsletters – contributions are more than welcome.

In recent years officers and members have overlooked saving many copies of Nipper Handbooks, photos and other
memorabilia. These are valuable records that need to be saved for club historical purposes.
If anyone has any of this type of record they no longer wish to keep, Sue and Ian Scott (9341 5231) would be very
happy to take them off your hands to preserve them in the City archives.
On Saturday 22nd February the Annual Rottnest Channel Swim took place. Many club members were involved in
either the solo, duo or team swim OR were involved in a support capacity by paddling, being “skipper” or as crew on a
boat. To all members involved, this is a great event to be part of and congratulations to you all for participating.
One special mention is made of our own club president – Grant Trew – who had a top 5 finish. Grant completed his
third crossing - very successfully completing the swim in a time of 4 hours 25 minutes. This placed him fifth in the
solo field of 244 competitors. This is a fantastic achievement of which the club and its members should be truly
proud of. Grant amazingly found time to train hard for this iconic event with a busy lifestyle - juggling work, a young
family and a commitment to leading our club through a very challenging period of time, especially with our new
building development.
Placed in the top ten solo finishers were Tim Hewitt in fourth place and Ben Hewitt
in tenth – terrific results also!
Also big congratulations to Kaylene Bozich for completing her first solo Rottnest Channel crossing.
Normally seen mixing it with the boaties, Kaylene showed she is equally as talented out of the boat.
