The Connected CarWhat is it?
• At its simplest the connected car has a two way connection to the outside world giving access to information and services.
• The real connected car is one that comprehensively integrates external content and capabilities with the car’s own on-board network, systems and capabilities allowing many functions to be undertaken unmediated by the driver.
• The connected car generates, collects, &distributes data and consumes data and services

MultiModal InformationTwo Distinct Types
6
InterCity – National/International• Developing fast in Europe.• Less likely to involve private car• Not that relevant for Australia
IntraCity – Urban/Metropolitan • Well advanced within PT network – PT MultiModal only • Virtually no well integrated universal Public/Private (Car & PT) MultiModal
Information Services• Linked to integrated ticketing• Will need to link to MaaS initiatives• The future quite possibly about MaaS where most transport is Public Transport• Differentiator will not be
• Public /Private Transport, but• Mass / Shared / Personal Transport

MultiModal InformationWhat's stopping it?
7
Plentiful, but limited UseMore than a hundred multimodal journey planners are already available in European countries, regions and cities.
However, information services remain very fragmented in what they offer……... Services such as car-sharing, car-pooling and demand-responsive transport, which provide more environmentally-friendly modes of transport, have not yet been integrated into travel planning to a practical level
Hurdles to Overcome• Insufficient accessibility of full multimodal travel and traffic data with
detail, coverage & quality • Lack of interoperable data formats and data exchange protocols • Cooperation between stakeholders

MultiModalIn Vehicle Navigation with full MultiModal routing
12
The next step for in-car navigation/routing: If you are able to reach your destination more quickly using alternative transport such as the underground or rapid-transit train, the Navigation will take these into account and show you the current schedules and guide you to an available parking space near the respective stop.

Volkswagen’s 2025 strategy targets Mobility as a Service (MaaS). June 2016
“Mobility services as additional growth driverThe second key building block of “TOGETHER –Strategy 2025” alongside the transformation of the core business involves the establishment of a cross-brand mobility solutions business. The new unit will develop and acquire - ride hailing, i.e. on-demand mobility services. Other services such as robotaxis, carsharing and transport on-demand will then be grouped around this nucleus. Volkswagen Group has already invested in on-demand mobility company Gett.Volkswagen’s aim is for the new mobility solutions business to generate revenue in the billions by 2025”Source VW Group strategy announcement June 2016

MultiModalAll aboard – but which direction?
14
Move Fromprivate transport
(owned by individuals)
Topublic transport
(owned by others and shared)
This does not necessarily mean a move from Cars to –Trains, Trams, Buses
Need to talk about • mass transport and personal transport – not• puplic transport and private transport
This will be Mobility as a Service
At its heart will be information and transactions which will be integrated with your personal needs
