Welcome to Tried and Tweaked: Activities to re-energize peer learning sessions. Who here as already received a PDF of the book? I will have a copy for everyone to take home with them after the session. This is a collection of activities that our student leaders have created over the past 5 years. Many of the activities address 2 principles (out of 8) that guide facilitators when planning and conducting their sessions: 1) they model productive learning behaviors, and 2) they encourage students to interact with each other so peers are truly helping peers.

How Tried and Tweaked came about? Inspiration for T&T goes back to 2010 Released a book Two (or More) Heads – a collection of stories of our PAL facilitators’ experiences in and outside the PAL classroom.

I stumbled upon an excellent article “Storytelling in Organizations.” It was my students who had the stories and I wanted more of them. They were too valuable to let fade away. Given success of our first book, I knew we would put together future collections, even though I didn’t know at the time what we would collect. I was continually amazed by the creativity in the activities facilitators designed and I wanted to capture that and give it more permanence. I thought that new facilitators would value learning about specific activities that had worked well for their predecessors, and would appreciate some tips on how to modify an activity. The facilitators were very onboard with this idea; especially because they would be the creators of the content. They felt their work was valued.

We decided to create an archive by using the Moodle platform – similar to Blackboard - which we were already using anyway for its forums. Here you can see the different forums over the semesters. The forums were also used to store team meeting notes.

I invited facilitators to step forward if they were interested in serving as editor - it was a paid (hourly) role and would involve working over the summer. The student most interested was Justin. He facilitated chemistry PAL sessions for 5 semesters and served for one year as the sciences team leader.

Managing the volume of activities facilitators had written about presented a challenge. The first task was to set up a system to archive the stories that would also lend itself to editing by multiple users. I created a Google spreadsheet and inserted the narratives, as they were written, right from the Moodle forums. The two student editors – Justin and Alyssa – read the narratives and generated the headings of each column. Each column is a different attribute by which we wanted to sort the stories. If a story had more than one attribute, it would show up twice.

Our initial format included little picture icons that indicated the type of activity, suggested grouping, and This activity “It’s a Scratch Off!” shows that it is a game, is done individually, and involves a worksheet. It also is quite specific as to group size and length of time for each portion of the activity. Ultimately, we decided this was too prescriptive and gave an impression as being less adaptable to a reader’s situation.
