Getting to know you...• You should have brought your photographs

from the summer with you on a pen drive.• Load them onto your desktop and show the

person next to you (after introducing yourself). Do not explain the shots.

• Can your partner understand the photos? • After your partner has looked through them,

explain the contexts.

Page 7: Aquinas Media AS Intro

• A good journalistic photo should:– Work out of context– Potentially have a narrative OR– Allow the reader to make their own meaning – Be in focus– Have only a little space above the head– Be well lit– Have a central focus, something to draw the eye

Tick off the following if they apply to your partner’s shots

First Task (This will count towards your PLANNING)

In groups of no more than 5, create a Double Page Spread where you are the stars.

• Take cameras and tripods along the Media wing and main corridor

• Using white walls as your backdrop, take 10 group shots in different poses.

• Upload all photos to your desktops• Share with the rest of the group ONE picture from

your summer that represents you (use email or pen drives)

There are TWO basic types of group Double Page Spread...

Headline on left

All text on one side

Sub-headings in a different colour to draw the eye through the text

Group images on one side

Star is generally prominent in the shot

Captions for all photos are needed for context

Photos may overlap to create energy and a careless atmosphere

MODE OF ADDRESS may be conversational to make reader feel that they belong to an exclusive group

Journalistic spreads with lots of material Images

may not be “set- up”

Page 10: Aquinas Media AS Intro

Or image-heavy editorials with very little copy

Large headline on

left

A large “stand first”- the paragraph that starts the article

“Set- up” star images, taken in studios
