I was asked recently, “Why do we worship on Sunday?” I was also asked, “Is Sunday the

Sabbath?”

Let me answer the second question first, using one simple word: “No!” The Sabbath is not

Sunday, though many Christians think it is. The Sabbath is actually the 7th day of the week,

as we read in Genesis 2. Since Sunday is the first day of the week on our calendars, that

would make Saturday the Sabbath, not Sunday. In reality, the Jewish Sabbath actually begins

at sundown on Friday evening and continues till sundown on Saturday evening. So, if we

want to be strict Sabbath keepers, Saturday is to be our day of rest. That sure isn’t going to

happen, is it? There are some traditions, like Seventh Day Adventists, who do hold to the

Old Testament understanding of the Sabbath and hold their services on Saturday.

Now my answer to the second question: We worship on Sundays because that was the day

Jesus was raised from the dead. All the gospels indicate Jesus was raised on the first day of

the week. In the early church Sunday became known as the Lord’s Day, the day for

Christians to gather and celebrate Jesus’ resurrection. They would probably rise early on

Sunday morning, gather in a fellow believer’s house for worship, then head off to work,

wherever that might be. This would certainly keep them distinct from the Jews, whose

worship took place on the Sabbath.

So what’s my point? Some of you may have already figured this out! I had a professor in

seminary who disliked the phrase Easter Sunday to indicate the day in the spring when we

gather in celebration of Jesus’ resurrection. Dr. McCloud insisted every Sunday was an

Easter. In other words, every Sunday was the day for Jesus’ followers to gather and celebrate

his resurrection from the dead. This is what the early church did!

Easter Day this year was March 31st. We had a larger than normal crowd, we had our

worship area filled with lilies and the accompanying aroma from the lilies, our kids enjoyed

the Easter Egg hunt, and we listened to Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” as worship drew to a

close. Then comes April 7th, the Sunday after Easter. We called the Sunday after Easter

“Low Sunday” in seminary because of the let down in the crowd following Easter. Seminary

students who worked in churches often got to preach on Low Sunday! Yet April 7th is also

Easter, the day we are called to gather and celebrate God’s incredible grace as well. And so

is April 14th and 21st and 28th and so on and so on!

See you at worship – every Sunday!

Ken
