Flood Protection

Flood.protection.is.on.everyone’s.mind.this.season..Your.Chamber.board,.after.weeks.of.study.and.consultation.with.its.members,.endorsed.the.City’s.plan.for.flood.protection.and.its.proposed.method.of.payment.–.an.extension..of.the.current.local.option.sales.tax..Many.of.the.details.are.in.the.main.article,.and.more.can.be.found.at.www.voteyesMay3.org...Please.attend.one.or.more.of.the.numerous.neighborhood.meetings.scheduled.in.April.so.that.you.can.be.an.informed.voter.on.this.critical.issue.in.our.development.as.a.community.

We.continue.to.work.on.our.Prosperity.Agenda..After.months.of.study,..we.have.determined.that.we.would.like.to.pursue.a.public/private.partnership.for.the..development.of.the.Innovation.Center..To.that.end,.we.met.in.March.with.the.Economic.Development.Administration.(EDA),.the.primary.grantor.for.the.Innovation.Center..They.are.funding.similar.centers.throughout.the.Midwest,.as.they.know.the.benefits.of.a.physical.space.and.dedicated.programming.to.developing.a.culture.and.practice.of.innovation,.in.accord.with.the.latest.science.on.innovation..We.plan.to.have.the.detailed.public/private.proposal.to.the..EDA.in.early.May.

Many.people.have.asked.me.how.our.search.for.a.new.Chamber.President.is.progressing..We.have.not.started.the.search.process.yet,.as.we.are.taking.this.time.to.determine.the.scope.of.responsibilities.and.the.skills.needed.to.pursue.our.Prosperity.Agenda..For.example,.determining.the.Chamber’s.role.in.the.Innovation.Center.will.also.determine.in.large.part.what.skills.are.needed..We.are.also.in.discussions.with.other.organizations.with.related.missions.to.determine..if.there.is.a.more.powerful.method.to.achieve.our.declared.objectives..Until.those.discussions.provide.more.concrete.direction,.a.search.would.be.premature..

However,.out.of.respect.for.our.members.and.staff.it.became.clear.that.is.was.time.for.a.leader.to.be.available.on.a.regular.basis..The.Chamber.has.named.Dee.Baird.as.interim.president.&.CEO..Dee.is.a.proven.and.highly.capable.leader.and.CEO.and.we.are.confident.she.will..handle.this.assignment.well.

Your.board.is.focused.on.creating.the.best.organization.to.pursue.our.critical.mission.in.this.community..Please.feel.free.to.contact.me.with.suggestions.or.comments..The.Chamber.staff.is.committed.to.serving.our.members.and.will.continue.to.carry.out.the.Prosperity.Agenda.

When.outdoor.warning.sirens.are.heard.on.the.first.Wednesday.morning.of.each.month,.it.is.the.normal.monthly.test..But.what.does.it.mean.when.the.outdoor.notification.system,.commonly.called.sirens,.are.heard.at.a.different.time.or.day?.Should.a.business.or..individual.activate.their.emergency.plan.based.on.the.sirens?.The..purpose.of.the.outdoor.warning.system.is.to.alert.individuals.who.are.outdoors.that.they.should.go.indoors.and.seek.additional.information.

The.multi-million.dollar.system.is.owned.and.maintained.by.the.NextEra.Energy.Duane.Arnold.Energy.Center.(DAEC)..It.is.part.of.a.system.of.public.alerting.technologies.that.are.made.available.to.the.Linn.County.Emergency.Management.Agency.to.alert.the.community.to.severe.weather,.a.hazardous.materials.incident,.an.event.at.the.Duane.Arnold.Energy.Center,.or..any.other.issue.where.the.community.should.be.alerted..People.most.commonly.associate.the.sounding.of.the.sirens.with.severe.weather.events.and.these.are.the.most.common.occurrences..For.severe.weather,.our.current.guidelines.are.to.activate.the.sirens.when.a.tornado,.winds.greater.than.70.mph,.or.golf.ball.size.hail.are.indicated.by.the.National.Weather.Service.or.a.trained.spotter.

For.all.types.of.events,.the.ability.to.activate.sirens.quickly.is.our.priority..Even.when.you.hear.the.sirens,.your.location.may.not.be.affected..It.is.important.to.note.that.the.system.covers.the.10.mile.area.around.the.Duane.Arnold.Energy.Center;.it.is.not.a.county-wide.system,.and.other.communities.control.their.own.sirens..Rapid.activation.of.sub-groups.of.sirens.for.severe.weather.alerting.is.not.yet.available..Because.of.this,.the.default.activation.will.be.all.109.sirens.within.control.of.the.Linn.County.Emergency.Management.Agency..An.effort.will.be.made.to.re-sound.the.sirens.every.10-15.minutes.while.the.severe.weather.condition.exists..

The.outdoor.warning.system.is.used.to.promote.situational.awareness.for.a.variety.of.reasons..When.sirens.are.sounded,.businesses.should.use.additional.sources.of.information.(local.media,.weather.all-hazard.radios,.etc).before.determining.the.proper.response.or.plan.of.action..Individuals.should.do.the.same.-.after.going.indoors!
