2015 Legislative BreakfastThe Cham-

ber hosted its annual Legisla-tive Breakfast on Monday, Febru-ary 23, 2015 at the Olde Breton Inn in Leonard-town. Those in attendance had the opportunity to hear our St. Mary’s County, Maryland Delegation speak on issues of importance to Southern Maryland businesses and the community.

Questions asked of the delegation in the Q&A session following their individual presentations included whether the delegation plans to submit any bond bills; their posi-tion on changing the requirements for employers who are self-insured; and possible state action to help localities deal with the heroin and opiate problem. The delegation also discussed the third building at SMHEC. Attendees were provided with a handout of the Chamber’s positions

on pending legisla-tion. Additional copies are avail-able at the Cham-ber office and on the Chamber ’ s website.

Announcing the 3rd Annual Bay-CSS Walk, Run & Roll event being held again in beautiful St. Mary’s City, Maryland to benefit people with disabilities in the community. Join Bay Community Support Services (Bay-CSS), a full-service agency that provides quality support services for people with disabilities in Maryland, on Saturday, April 25th for this fun event for the whole family.

This unique event is for the whole family and for every fitness level. There are three courses for you to choose from – whether you would prefer a leisurely stroll in beautiful wooded surroundings, to challenge yourself on the 5K course, or to roll with the aid of a wheelchair or smaller wheeled modes of transportation like rollerblades, roller skates or scoot-ers. Come early and enjoy a light runner's breakfast provided by Panera Bread before the fun walk, run and roll.

There will be drawings for great prizes gifts at the event (you must be a paid, registered participant and present to be eligible for the prize drawings).

The event will be held rain or shine in Historic St. Mary’s City located at 18751 Hogaboom Lane, St. Mary's City, MD 20686. Registration starts at 7:00 am at the Old Statehouse in St. Mary’s City, and the event begins at 8:00 am. To avoid long registration lines and for $5.00 off the registration fee of $25.00, participants may register online (the registration link can be found on the agency website at www.baycss.org). MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital (MSMH) is set to hold its 10th Annual Golf Tournament at Breton Bay Golf and Country Club at 9 a.m. on May 19, 2015, with a rain date of May 26. An important benefit for our local community, we invite you to tee off with us as we raise money to fund state-of-the-art equipment and resources for our non-profit, community hospital.

Organized by MedStar St. Mary’s Auxiliary and Foundation, beverages and snacks will be available throughout the day along with a catered lunch and awards ceremony following the tournament. Drawings for several door prizes and a 50 / 50 raffle will also take place.

Registration is $100 per person or $400 for a team of four and sponsorships for the event are now available. Sponsorship levels range from platinum ($5,000), to Gold ($2,500), Silver ($1,000), Bronze ($500), and Tee ($250). The higher the sponsorship level, the more players and advertising opportunities the sponsor receives. Don’t play golf? You can still support your community hospital. Donations of all sizes are welcome and checks can be made out to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary and mailed to Philanthropy Officer, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, P.O. Box 527, Leonardtown, MD 20650.

Funds raised through the Auxiliary have allowed for donations that can be seen all throughout the hospital, from an EKG machine and fluid warmers, to flat screen TVs in patient rooms and sleep sofas in each of the Women’s Health & Family Birthing Center suites.

The Plant Sale, sponsored by the Sotterley Garden Guild, will run on Saturday, April 25th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and on Sunday, April 26th from Noon to 3:00 p.m. Because of their dedication to this National Historic Landmark, these nurturing volunteers have not only raised thousands of dollars in support of Historic Sotterley Plantation, but they are also responsible for the maintenance of the exquisite Colonial Revival Garden. Their passion for beauty is evident in the smallest of details, so take the opportunity to appreciate their horticultural artistry!

BB&T announced today it has promoted James Andreacci to market president. Andreacci is based at 23415 Three Notch Road.

Andreacci, who previously served as BB&T’s business services officer in Southern Maryland, brings more than 12 years in the community bank to his new role.

An active member in the community, Andreacci is currently on the Board of Directors for the St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce, on the board of directors of The Lexington Park Rotary Club, Board of Appeals for St. Mary’s County, Vice Chairman for Cedar Lane Senior Community Living Center, member of the Finance Committee for United Way of Calvert County, and is involved with many other civic activities.

The Wayne, NJ native earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Pennsylvania State University.

Florida Institute of Technology has offered graduate studies in Southern Maryland, primarily for NAS Patuxent River employees continuously since 1972. FIT Patuxent is pleased to announce ap-proval by the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center Board of Governors to offer a local, face-to-face Doctor of Business Adminis-

tration (DBA) at SMHEC. As you may know, there are options for local advanced postgraduate study in technically-related or specialized fields. However, there is presently no advanced postgraduate program in business. As future economic challenges will continue to demand a stronger business acumen at all levels, the DBA is positioned to equip local leaders in private, public, and nonprofit sectors to effectively meet these challenges in new and innovative ways.

The DBA is intended to be offered as early as the 2015-2016 academic year, pending validation of the local enroll-ment need. SMHEC has indicated a long-standing need for a doctorate degree in business, finance, management or related fields. Together, SMHEC and FIT have collected names and emails of dozens of local individuals interested in a doctorate program in business. This information forms the basis of a needs analysis for this new advanced degree program.

Additional info on the degree of Doctor of Business Administration – The DBA or D.B.A. is equivalent to a Ph.D. in Business Administration, though the DBA tends more towards applied research rather than theoretical research, especially during the thesis writing phase. Another difference is that the DBA as a professional degree program is typically offered on a part-time basis, allowing students to pursue the research degree while still working. This also affords the opportunity of selecting research topics for dissertation that are relevant to the current state of business.

Seminar on “Small Business Government Contracting” to be Held May 6

Enjoy a wonderful paddle while helping cleanup the St. Mary's River, Saturday, April 11, 9 a.m. to 12 noon dur-ing the 7th Annual St. Mary’s River Cleanup hosted by the St. Mary’s River Watershed Association. Volunteers will paddle up and down the St. Mary's River Water Trail from the end of Adkins Road. The public is invited to partici-pate. Registration is required.

Volunteers Sought for the St. Mary’s River Cleanup April 11

Volunteers pose with trash collected from the St. Mary's River on Saturday, April 5, 2014 before it is hauled off for proper disposal at the St. Andrew's Landfill. Thirty-seven volunteers pulled 11 tires, 82 bags of trash and recyclables, and 1,320 lbs. of loose trash from the St. Mary's River during the 6th Annual St. Mary's River Cleanup.

The word “plasma” brings images of TVs into the minds of most people. Chemists, however, think of powerful analytical instruments used to measure the amounts of trace elements in materials. Thanks to the Educational Partnership Agreement between the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) and St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the college’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry recently received by donation an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) from the Navy.

Dr. Geoff Eldridge, chemistry team lead in the Propulsion and Power Department at NAWCAD, arranged for the donation of the ICP-OES instrument to strengthen the partnership with St. Mary’s College. “The American Chemical Society recommends that this instrumentation be part of an undergraduate curriculum. This ICP-OES provides St. Mary’s College students experience with the technology, while providing NAWCAD backup capability in the case that the primary instrument at Patuxent River is out of service,” said Eldridge.

Eldridge was on hand for the donation ceremony and provided instruction for the students’ first laboratory expe-rience with the ICP-OES, in which they measured the trace metal content of various water samples and sports drinks.

An ICP-OES measures the amount of virtually any metal in a sample. The instrument burns a small amount of sample in the high temperature plasma and measures the amount of light given off during this process. Every ele-ment produces light at specific wavelengths through this process, which lets the user determine which elements were in the sample.

While NAWCAD used the ICP-OES to measure trace metal content in jet fuels and engine lubricants, at St. Mary’s College the instrument will be used in multiple courses and in undergraduate research projects.

“This instrument greatly enhances our ability to provide students with hands-on educational experiences as well as new research opportunities,” said St. Mary’s College Chemistry Department Chair and Associate Professor Randolph Larsen. This spring semester students of Larsen’s chemistry class are using the instrument to measure levels of lead in contaminated soil.

In 2011, St. Mary’s College, NAWCAD, and The Patuxent Partnership formalized the Educational Partnership Agreement to advance scientific research and foster academic growth in science, technology, engineering, and math-ematics (STEM). To date, the agreement has led to several external research grants and contracts which support student internships and research equipment.

Throughout her career, Mrs. Saylor has held several different positions in banking, insurance and finance. Prior to joining the bank, she was a Branch Manager for PNC Bank in Southern Maryland. An active member of the local community, she currently serves on three nonprofit boards including the St. Mary's County Chamber of Commerce,

the Three Oaks Homeless Shelter and the Golden Retriever Rescue of Southern Maryland. Mrs. Saylor attended Tidewater Community College in Norfolk, Virginia.

Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center in Solomons, Maryland, will host the 5th Annual Fairy & Gnome Home Festival on Sunday, April 26, from noon to 4:00pm. The festival offers fun and engaging activities along the Wooded Path and throughout the grounds. This event creates a magical world of discovery, fun, and learning opportunities for boys and girls of all ages. The first stop is the lovely Fairy Lolly, which was ranked by Chesapeake Family Magazine as second in the top six playgrounds of Central Maryland! This free-play area is where young guests can climb, explore, build, and dream with a variety of creative toys and props. Families can also build their own fairy houses and gnome homes or new this year, make your own magic wand at the Mega-Wand making station then create your own take home Forrest Friend! (all materials provided) Every little fairy and gnome will have fun with all the Gnome Games, including Feed the Trash Dragon, catch a fish in the Fairy Fishing Hole, and dig for treasure in the Troll’s Treasure Trough!

Be sure to stop at one of the fairy vendors to find the perfect costume or check out the face painting tents, temporary tattoos, chalk fun, and of course, yummy refreshments! Don’t forget your camera. This year there will be nearly 55 handmade fairy houses and gnome homes scattered along the Wooded Path, with a walking guide to help you locate each home.

Greenwell Foundation Certified as One of 35 “Horse Discovery Centers” The Maryland Horse Industry Board, a program within the Maryland Department of Agriculture, is launching

a statewide network of 35 Horse Discovery Centers in 15 counties next month. These centers are carefully selected, licensed stables that are welcoming people of all ages and experience levels into their barns to learn about horses in a friendly and knowledgeable environment. “We know from our research that there are thousands of Marylanders interested in becoming involved with horses, either as riders or spectators, but they don’t know where to go or how to get started.” said MHIB Chair Jim Steele. “The Horse Discovery Centers are the answer.”

The breadth and diversity of the stables in the Discovery Center network is wide and deep. They range from trail riding centers to Western riding operations to horse rescues and stables offering summer camps, English equitation, even Civil War re-enactments. Geographically they are located in all regions of the state.

Last year MHIB invited its more than 700 licensed stables to volunteer to become a Horse Discovery Center if they were willing to meet stringent criteria and eagerly welcome newcomers with open arms to educate them about horses and horsemanship. A total of 68 stable owners responded and attended five information workshops throughout the state. Of these, 45 applied to join the program and 35 met the certification standards of an MHIB inspection team.

Criteria included proof of commercial liability insurance; written programs and procedures addressing safety rules and public outreach; clean, sanitary conditions, equipment and facilities; and. of course, well cared for and healthy horses. “Most of all, the stable operators need to exhibit exemplary customer service, enthusiasm and a pas-sion to educate the public about horses and a sense of selflessness in providing information and referrals to all types of horse activities and experiences,” said Kathleen Tabor, an MHIB board member and equine attorney. She logged more than 3,000 miles inspecting the facilities with longtime MHIB stable inspector and current board member Beverly Raymond.

The Maryland Horse Chase: To launch the program, MHIB will host a statewide scavenger hunt called the Maryland Horse Chase from April 6 to April 26. Scavenger hunt participants will have the opportunity to visit many of the centers, earn points by completing challenges and then have a chance to win more than $10,000 worth of horse-related prizes, including free riding lessons, riding apparel and tickets to horse events.
