I t has been a very busy time since my last Chairman’s address in March with the next quarter showing no sign slowing. We had a great turnout at the Sydney APPMA members dinner despite the downpour that hit Sydney that afternoon. I would like to thank Mr Peter Burns , Public Policy Director, Australian Industry Group for his attendance and presentation which was very informative and well received by all attendee’s. My recent visit to interpack, with 2,700 exhibitor and 175,000 visitors, has once again reconfirmed it as being the world’s most important trade fair for the packaging and processing sector. The requirement for businesses to focus on strategies and investments that promote, efficiency, improved productivity, speed and access to real-time feedback and decision making information represent key messages to companies operating in the Packaging and Processing industry. The exhibition also provided a fantastic opportunity for the APPMA to continue developing relationships with key alliance partners, promote AUSPACK 2015 and further enhance our profile within International audiences. With the support of APPMA Board members and ETF our Exhibition Management Partner, I am proud to report that positive inroads were made on all fronts. The Packaging and Processing Week agreement uniting the APPMA and AIP has been formally signed by both parties with the formal launch due to coincide with the AIP National Conference which is taking place on 17th and 18th June in Sydney. Information regarding the APPMA member networking and education benefits plus recognition and support for innovation and achievements are covered in more detail in this newsletter. Up-coming APPMA member functions include a networking dinner scheduled for the10th of June with Anthony McLean as the speaker and the opportunity to listen to Rick Fox, Chairman of PMMI present at a cocktail function on the 16th of June in Sydney as a part of Packaging & Processing Week. 4 PACKLINE NEWSLETTER JUNE-JULY 2014

In 2015, Packaging & Processing Week is tipped to be the leading event in the food industry calendar in Australasia, when the event expands to be a food processing and packaging ‘super-show’, says AUSPACK organiser, Exhibitions & Trade Fairs (ETF). The 2015 event will comprise AUSPACK, the largest food packaging and processing exhibition in Australasia, AIP technical forums, and an industry awards ceremony and networking event.

AUSPACK 2015, which will take place on 24 to 27 March at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, is already 63 per cent booked, with over 80 exhibitors covering the packaging, processing, materials, components and industrial sectors.

Robert Marguccio of the APPMA, commented: “2015 Packaging & Processing Week, combined with AUSPACK, will provide a higher level of education and training opportu-nities not only to members of the APPMA and AIP but also the broader industry.

“We understand that food production businesses are not just interested in processing and packaging machinery, they need the whole picture, a total overview of their businesses and associated influences which they can gain from education, networking and knowledge exchange, all of which they can find at the expanded show.

“We’re pleased to offer the entire industry a forum to network and learn from the best in the business.”

Food industry wrapped up

All in a week’s workthe Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) and the Aus-tralian Packaging & Processing Machinery Association (AP-PMA) have joined forces on a new initiative: Packaging & Processing Week. This new an-nual event, owned and operat-ed by the two associations, will be staged alternately alongside two well-established biennial events – the AIP Na-tional Conference and AUS-PACK exhibition respectively.

As the peak educational body for the Australian pack-aging industry, and with over 50 years’ experience in educa-tion and training, the AIP will deliver the education compo-nent of the week each year.

Showcasing innovation in machinery and packaging so-lutions will be the role of the APPMA, which has been es-tablished for over 30 years and next year celebrates the 30th anniversary of its hallmark AUSPACK trade show.

Packaging & Processing Week is driven by a number of objectives common to both as-sociations, to benefit their members and the broader in-dustry. Top of the list is to sup-port, encourage and recognise innovation within the packag-ing and processing industries; and to drive initiatives to de-liver improved and on-going education, training and devel-

opment for the packaging and processing industries.

Mark Dingley, chairman of the APPMA, says his associa-tion believes Packaging and Processing Week provides an opportunity to capitalise on the coming together of indus-try and deliver additional ini-tiatives that support both [AIP and APPMA] individual and collective objectives.

“We would like to see Pack-aging & Processing Week at-tract a larger audience from all sectors of the industry and each year provide opportuni-ties for members, exhibitors and sponsors to leverage in-creased value from their in-vestment. These initiatives will take the form of more fo-cused educational activities targeting industry segments, social and networking events, additional awards recognising industry achievements and ed-ucational sponsorship to name a few,” Dingley said.

AIP national president Ralph Moyle, echoed this sentiment, and added: “The AIP is very ex-cited about introducing Packag-ing & Processing Week as it will allow two of the leading packag-ing industry associations the op-portunity to combine their sig-nificant areas of expertise to offer the industry more diverse initiatives that focus on educa-tion, knowledge and innovation.

“Bringing packaging, pro-cessing, materials and compo-nents under one educational banner will ensure that our of-ferings are much better-suited going forward to cater for all areas of the industry.

“The AIP and the APPMA complement each other and this agreement is an on-going commitment that we will work together to improve AUSPACK, the National Technical Forums and the AIP National Confer-ence to ensure that there is something for everyone.”

The annual event will serve to encourage interaction and networking across all sectors of the wider packaging indus-try on a regular basis, enhanc-ing the value proposition of both the national conference and AUSPACK. ■

This year, Packaging & Pro-cessing Week will coincide with the AIP National Confer-ence taking place at the SOFI-TEL, Wentworth in Sydney from 16-18 June.

Packaging & Processing Week will add value to the AUSPACK 2015 trade show.

9PACKLINE NEWSLETTER JUNE-JULY 2014

John Williams, APPMA Secretary recently attend the Global Food Forum in Sydney and presented the following learnings from the event. Discussions involving some of the processing sectors major players including, Thomas Foods, Cargill, Murray Goulburn, Goodman Fielder, Fonterra, Simplot and Mondelez. Also represented were the Action Land & Cattle company, Blackmore Waygu Beef, the AFGC, Hughes Pastoral as well as representatives from the Media, Government, Finance Industry,

Coles and the Former Governor General of Australia; Major General The Hon Michael Jeffery.

Top 4 Commodity Growth projections for Australia: Fruit & Veg, Meat, Cereals, Dairy. The key themes throughout the day causing pressure on growth within the food industry are: Competitiveness within the region, Significant Labour costs, Productivity (more hours for less output has been the trend for 2010-2011), Burden of Regulation from Government – Local, State and Federal, Access to the Resources – Land, Labour and Capital. Government represented by Barnaby Joyce with shadow Minister Joel Fitzgibbon also present. Barnaby is currently undertaking a White Paper on the Agricultural sector; Driving Open Markets, Resource Sustainability, Adapting to the Environment. Some of the challenges to meeting an increased demand for agricultural products in the future include: Infastructure – high cost of transport from the source to processing centres, In-land rail is inadequate, with most transport via road, Environmental Assessments (red tape) – potentially standing in the way of some major projects such as Dams, Investment – difficult to attract investment to long term, low return sector (agriculture). Investment needs to provide returns to the ‘Farm Gate’.

For the members of the APPMA some positive discussion from the processing sector were based around the need to: Embrace Change, Relationships with Suppliers and Customers are key, The need to invest in Capital to assist with supply chain efficiencies, By 2050 it is believed that Asia will import 5 x it’s current volume, Growth areas outside of Asia including Africa and the Middle East, Market is growing faster than the industry, Niche Markets are attractive places for investment, Need to go beyond what is comfortable and sell products suited to the Market, Australia needs to be less ‘inward’ looking and focus on Innovation through R&D, and supply products (export) that consumers want and in formats and languages that suit the end user.
