TThe APPMA is pleased to advise that as a second part of the Associations sponsorship of the newly released

Global Packaging Trends Report for 2015; which is a market research study highlighting future packaging

demand, product categories and opportunities for growth in packaging among fast-growing and maturing

world economies; all Members now have access to a webinar that was recently run by PMMI and Euromonitor

discussing the trends. A reminder that Members also have free access to the full report.

The Global Packaging Trends Report shows three influencers making a mark in every region: growing consumer awareness of health and wellness, stronger influence of recycling and environmental issues, and increasing disposable income and purchasing power. Other important regional trends include urbanisation, convenience, smaller pack sizes, branding strategies, internet retailing, and premiumisation. Globally, flexible plastic remains the dominant pack type with PET Bottles in second place. Pack types such as brick liquid cartons and PET bottles will register the highest growth rates.

The report also notes flexible plastic globally remains the dominant pack type, accounting for 29 percent of the market, while PET bottles (12 percent of the market) will be among the fastest growing, with 4.7 percent CAGR. Bottled water is expected to add 135 billion units through 2019, accounting for 54 percent of the absolute volume growth in PET bottle use. While beverage packaging drives growth in PET and glass, categories such as confectionery and biscuits prop up flexible packaging use.

The Global Packaging Trends Report was developed in collaboration with the PMMI, the Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, and three other associations from across the world. This included AMEC-ENVASGRAF, ASOCIACIÓN MULTISECTORIAL DE EMPRESAS, SYMOP, French Association for Manufacturing Technologies and UCIMA, Italian Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Association.

Small and Medium sized manufacturers in Pharmaceutical, Nutraceutical and Functional Food and Beverage industries in ANZ are sometimes faced with the lack of availability of indigenously manufactured packaging machinery to suit their unique needs. This forces them to either source high-quality machinery at exorbitantly high prices or be satisfied with inferior quality products from overseas suppliers. Even though many ANZ companies manage to source relevant machinery they are not lucky enough to get the guaranteed quick and efficient after-sale services from the suppliers.

Biotec Solutions Ltd. was formed in 2001 in Auckland to meet the growing manufacturing and Packaging machinery, Laboratory Equipment and Specialty Materials needs of these manufacturers. In addition to machinery, Biotec started supplying high-quality Empty hard gelatin and vegetarian capsules to their customers and also provide the value added services and guidance in product development, technical, quality and engineering field. To cater for their customers more efficiently they are now expanding their horizon in instrument Calibration Services.

Biotec Solutions Group has become one of the most trusted and recognisable service provider in Australia and New Zealand. Now they have Offices in Auckland (NZ) and Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane (Australia). They also have empty capsule storage warehouses in Auckland and Sydney.

TREND WATCH www.packagingnews.com.au March-April 2016

E

BOTTLED WATEREuromonitor expects that, globally, bot-tled water will grow at a CAGR of 8.4 per cent between now and 2019.

The Asia Pacific region will account for 70 per cent of global absolute volume growth in bottled water from 2014-2019, with an in-crease to 55.6 billion units expected.

The popularity of bottled water is largely propped up by the PET bottle pack format.

SOUR MILK DRINKSThroughout the Asia Pacific, yoghurt and sour milk product packaging will see a fore-cast volume CAGR of 8.2 per cent leading up to 2019.

There are a wide range of pack types in this category, but growth will be driven by shaped liquid cartons.

Key trends driving yoghurt packaging consumption throughout the forecast pe-riod are consumer demand for premium products in the wake of several dairy product quality scandals, and, again, the push for healthier lifestyles.

Growth in shaped liquid cartons in yoghurt and sour milk products, especially within China, will see a CAGR of 17.1 per cent due to these cartons' premium, 'safe' image.

Japan, the second largest yoghurt mar-ket in the Asia Pacific, will see a packag-ing increase despite a declining popula-tion and stagnant economic conditions.

Another trend within the category is increasing consumer demand for func-tional yoghurt which contains added in-gredients that provide health benefits.

Aluminum/ plastic pouches were rein-troduced in 2014 by Japanese dairy com-pany Morinaga Milk Industry, and will see a massive forecast CAGR of 21.4 per cent, albeit from a low base.

RIGHT: Plastic pouches are now a popular packaging option for a range of healthy products.

Consumers around the world are increasingly health-aware, and trends in packaging reflect this. We unpack a global trends report which shows how the wellness trend is influencing the industry.

32

UROMONITOR'S 2015 Global Packaging Trends Report, commissioned by PMMI* and sponsored by APPMA, stated that one of the top trends af-fecting global packaging was a greater consumer awareness of health and wellness.

While cigarettes are the largest cat-egory in flexible plastic packaging in the Asia Pacific, for example, the category has a forecasted absolute volume decline as a result of the growing health and wellness trend. Simply put, consumers are less in-clined to purchase products they know are harmful to their health.

In line with this trend, bottled water,

yoghurt and sour milk drinks, and ready-to-drink (RTD) tea have experienced strong growth. Euromonitor says the grow-ing health consciousness among consumers throughout the Asia Pacific region will see rising volume sales of pack-aging for healthy food and bev-erages such as milk and dairy products, RTD tea, and juice.

EUROMONITOR states that the Asia

Pacific is the region with the largest

potential growth opportunity. In terms of

pack type, PET bottles show the

strongest growth rates, while bottled

water leads category potential.

In the Asia Pacific, packaging is forecast

to grow at a rate of 4.3 per cent, with a

larger, urbanising population with bigger

disposable incomes driving growth.

The region can expect absolute

volume growth of 487 billions of

packaging units before 2019.

PET bottles is the pack type with the

largest packaging growth opportunity,

with a forecast growth rate

of 4.7 per cent. The health

and wellness trend, along

with the recyclability of this

pack type, have contribut-

before 2019.

PACKAGING IN THE ASIA PACIFIC

March-April 2016 www.packagingnews.com.au TREND WATCH 33

RTD TEAWhile PET bottles are most common, other pack types show large fore-cast growth in the RTD sector. PET bottles will remain the dominant pack for RTD tea in the Asia Pacific region over the pe-riod, with an 8.7 per cent forecast CAGR.

Metal beverage can growth will be driv-en by China, where consumers perceive this pack type to be of higher quality, espe-cially among younger people.

Large beverage manufacturers in Indone-sia have started to introduce thin-wall plas-tic containers, which will result in large growth over the forecast period.

China continues to lead the packaging market in RTD tea, but Indonesia is expected to rise to second place before 2019.

“Consumers are less inclined to purchase products they know are harmful to their health.”

During the forecast period, vol-ume share in China will consoli-date from 64 per cent in 2014 to 71

per cent in 2019. The largest growth is expected to be driven by metal beverage cans and PET bottles.

Indonesia, while losing total volume share between 2014-2019, will overtake Ja-pan in the forecast period. This is partially due to increased efforts of packaging com-panies to introduce different pack types and designs for the Indonesian consumer. RTD tea was observed in seven pack types in Indonesia compared to only three pack types in China. ■
