Petaluma Fair Wage CampaignThe City of Petaluma is launching

a Petaluma Fair Wage public infor-mation campaign to help local businesses show their support for the new City minimum wage that went into effect on Jan.1.

“The Petaluma Fair Wage campaign will help the city and its businesses explain the benefits of the higher minimum wage, as well as potential short-term effects,” Ingrid Alverde, who oversees the City’s Economic Development programs, said. “The wage rules are meant to improve the lives of workers, and the Fair Wage Campaign is a way to help businesses show that they support these improvements.”

The campaign will include window stickers, postcards, and a dedicated web page (cityofpetaluma.org/fairwage). To kick off the campaign, the City is designating February as “Fair Wage” month, with a call for community members to make a special effort to patronize Petaluma restaurants and retailers during this time.

“February is the perfect month to eat and shop in Petaluma—there’s Valentine’s Day, the Presidents Day holiday, and Sonoma Restaurant week (February 21-March 1). Knowing that your patronage supports fair wages is just an extra incentive,” Alverde said.

Minimum Wage Hike Impacts Local Businesses

Some local businesses, especially restaurants, are concerned about the impact of the new minimum wage hike which took effect on Jan. 1, saying the city ordinance implementing the hike did not provide enough time for them to prepare for the increased costs, or decrying the non-exemption for employees who receive tips or commissions.

Last August the Petaluma City Council unanimously approved the adoption of a local minimum wage ordinance requiring employers to pay the Petaluma minimum wage, rather than the state wage, for work done by employees within the Petaluma city limits.

The new Petaluma minimum wage is $14 per hour for employers with 25 or fewer employees, and $15 per hour for employers with 26 or more employees. The wage will increase annually beginning on Jan. 1, 2021 when all employers, small and large, will be required to pay $15 per hour plus a Cost of Living Adjustment calculated based on the Bay Area Consumer Price Index.

This ordinance covers all employees who work at least 2 hours per week in the City limits and who qualify for the minimum wage according to the California Labor Code.

Employees who receive tips and/or commissions are NOT exempt

and must be paid the local minimum wage for hours worked within the City limits. For more information about the law see cityofpetaluma.org/minimum-wage.

Petaluma Area Chamber of Commerce (PACC) member Kathleen Stafford, owner of Pongo’s Kitchen & Tap has said one of the main concerns among some business leaders in- cluding herself is the hurried timeline for implementation of the law.

Stafford told the Petaluma Argus Courier that in order to cope with the higher labor costs resulting from the wage hike, she has had to cut employee hours and increase costs to customers. Some business owners have already added a flat service fee in lieu of tips to help cover the cost of the wage increase.

Chamber CEO Onita Pellegrini has said the minimum wage hike hit restaurants especially hard, and members of the restaurant community have expressed concerns over other projected costs including bans of Styrofoam and single use plastic.

The City of Petaluma has launched a “Petaluma Fair Wage” public information campaign (see more in the City Comment column on this page) to support local businesses in explaining rising labor costs to their patrons.

Business Gives Backby Eileen Morris, COTS development manager

Good causes rely on good businesses for support. Thankfully, those good businesses abound in Petaluma. Here’s a round-up of some late 2019 giving as an introduction to this monthly feature aimed at recognizing the way area businesses support the community.

Rebuilding Together brings pro-fessional and amateurs together to repair and rehabilitate homes and facilities for low-income individuals and the agencies that serve them. Roman’s Plumbing has been “all-in” for years, says Rebuilding Together’s Executive Director Jane Hamilton. In December, Roman and Eleni Scanagatta’s team proved their commitment yet again: they replaced and installed three toilets at the Village Network of Petaluma’s new location. Roman’s supplied the materials and did everything in one day, free of charge. “This is a company with HEART,” Hamilton said.

The Petaluma Small Craft Center (PSCC) has been working to improve and increase access to the Petaluma River for 15 years. Lind Marine recently donated the final $30,000 the group needed to buy docks for a boat rental facility that will have us all paddling and pedaling on the water before too long. “Lind Marine has been a strong local business here in Petaluma for many years, and an equally strong supporter of the community,” said Greg Sabourin,

PSCC executive director.

Petaluma Coffee and Tea Co. designed its 30th birthday celebration to benefit Petaluma Bounty Farm, one of Petaluma People Services Center’s (PPSC) most important programs supplying PPSC’s Senior Cafe with fresh fruits and vegetables and sharing with COTS, PEP and the Salvation Army. “Petaluma Coffee and Tea is always there for our community. They are a true example of philanthropy,” Elece Hempel, PPSC executive director said.

The COTS Hour is COTS’ annual fundraiser and community get-together. Many thanks to the following Petaluma Area Chamber of Commerce (PACC) members including: Century 21 Bundesen; Friedman’s Home Improvement; Bank of Marin; Kaiser Permanente; St. Joseph Health; Exchange Bank; Peta-luma Coffee and Tea; Pure Energy Productions; Encore Events; Petaluma Health Care District; P.S. Catering; Clover Sonoma; Summit State Bank; CourseCo; and Petaluma Market for sponsoring the successful event. “Our businesses care about the homeless, plain and simple,” COTS CEO Chuck Fernandez said.

Want to let the community know about a local business which aided your team, school or nonprofit? Please contact Eileen Morris at [email protected].

The employees and owners of Lind Marine delivered a $30,000 donation to help buy docks for the boat rental facility being built on the Petaluma River.

Area Credit Union Celebrates 70 Years

Petaluma Area Chamber of Commerce (PACC) Platinum President’s Circle member Redwood Credit Union (RCU) celebrates 70 years of community service this year.

Originally formed by seven County of Sonoma employees as an affordable means to make bridge loans to fellow employees between paychecks, the Sonoma County Employees Credit Union was founded in 1950. In 1982, the company merged with Santa Rosa Public Employees Credit Union and was renamed Redwood Credit Union.

The credit union now has 19 locations throughout the North Bay and San Francisco, and is the 43rd largest credit union in the nation and the eighth largest in California.

“Though we’ve grown and added many services and locations over the past 70 years, helping people has always been at the heart of what we do,” said Brett Martinez, RCU president. “We are thankful for our 353,000 members, and through their loyalty and participation—as well as the dedication of our 700 employees—we have a solid foundation to continue providing affordable financial services and support to our communities for many more decades to come.”

RCU has more than $4.9 billion in assets and serves more than 353,000 members with full-service branches from San Francisco to Ukiah, plus free ATM access nationwide. For more information, call 1(800) 479-7928, or visit redwoodcu.org.

With more than 70 years of doing business in the area, PACC President’s Circle member Redwood Credit Union now employs 700 people across eight counties.

Volunteer to Express Valentine Love to Elders

Petaluma Area Chamber of Commerce (PACC) member Petaluma People Services Center (PPSC) invites volunteers to join them in creating and sending hand-made Valentines to area elders.

Volunteers are encouraged to make as many cards as they can, include a nice message and send them to PPSC by Monday, Feb. 10, who will collect the cards and deliver them in time for Valentine’s Day. PPSC serves more than 320 seniors daily, so they need as many cards as they can get to help them provide valentines to every senior they can find in Petaluma.

Guidelines for creating cards include:

• Do not use glitter, it creates food safety issues.

• Make your cards cheerful by using bright colors and decorating using paint, crayons, markers, or collage.

• Avoid dark backgrounds and religious symbols.

• Write clearly in large print and avoid using abbreviation “V-day” say, “Valentine’s Day.”

• Do not give out your address or suggest that the recipients write back to you. Initiating an ongoing correspondence is not appropriate.

Make sure that the cards are appropriate for the intended audience; pretend it’s your sweet grandma, not your snarky teenage brother. This Valentine tradition began eleven years ago, when PPSC asked volunteers to create handmade Valentines that could be delivered to the PPSC Meals On Wheels homebound seniors. Last year, the local non-profit received more than 5,000 valentines and delivered them to all the seniors throughout southern Sonoma County.

Valentine makers are also encouraged to send a photo of their creations to [email protected] so they can shared with others who are creating cards. Volunteers also help by donating towards the purchase of stamps that will be used to mail out the Valentine’s Day cards.

Mail or drop off cards to PPSC, 1500 Petaluma Blvd. South, Petaluma, CA 94954, Attn. St. Valentine.

New Features Aimed at Sharing More Love

Valentine’s Day and the overall impression that February is the month for love makes this issue the perfect time to announce some new features. The Petaluma Business aims to share the love Chamber Members send out into the community all year.

The new Business Gives Back feature, a column written by Eileen Morris is aimed at recognizing the ways in which PACC member business contribute to the community. It’s a love and thanks letter for all the ways that PACC members make this area a better place to be.

Coming in March, a new monthly feature, Restaurant Corner, put together by PACC Membership

Director Sue Carson will spotlight PACC member eateries that augment Petaluma’s great food and community reputation. This feature will also recognize the businesses that provide the “good eats” at so many PACC events year after year. It will give members some great recommendations for caterers, places to hold special meetings or events featuring good food and more.

That’s just the beginning of all the ways PACC will be “showing the love” for members and community in 2020. Don’t miss all the great Chamber services and events this year. If you are already a member—renew; if you are not a member—join. You will be glad you did.
