Announcing Chamber Board Election Results

The results of the annual Petaluma Area Chamber of Commerce (PACC) board election are final. Chamber members can be assured that the four elected candidates who’ve served PACC and the community in the past will continue to do so in the coming three years.

The four candidates were incumbents and each will serve on the board for three years. Newly elected board members are Jana Beatty, Allan Jaffe, Mike Harris and

Petaluma Police Chief Ken Savano.

The new PACC Board of Directors and officers will be installed at the Annual Members Luncheon on July 19 at Sally Tomatoes, 1110 Valley House Drive in Rohnert Park. You can register by visiting petalumachamber.com. Donations of raffle prizes, which are always a big hit at the event, are sought. If you would like to make a donation, contact the Chamber.

Spring changes everything, even The Petaluma Area Chamber of Commerce (PACC) office which this month is movin’ on and up from Suite A2 at 6 Petaluma Blvd. to Suite B11 upstairs in the same building.

Onita Pellegrini, PACC CEO assures Chamber members that the new digs are filled with natural light and great. There’s a conference room with windows that will be available free to Chamber members. To schedule the conference room, just call the Chamber at 762-4721. Take the elevator or the steps upstairs–the reward is a large outdoor deck with a killer view, which is worth every step.

The doors are open in the new space now—members are encouraged to drop by and sneak a peek—and an event to introduce the space will be planned once the boxes are unpacked and the staff is all settled in.

Nothing changes but the location of the office suite; Chamber is still at the same phone number and e-mail, so members are never out of touch.

Chamber members in good standing who might want to join the board next year can petition to be on the ballot before the annual May election. Petitions with five supporting member signatures must be turned in at the PACC office.

CEO Named Woman of the YearNoted community business woman

Onita Pellegrini, chief executive officer of the Petaluma Area Chamber of Commerce (PACC) for 25 years, was selected by Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, as 2019 Woman of the Year for Sonoma County is hardly a surprise to the community leaders and PACC members who know and work with her.

More recently, Sen. Dodd said, “Under Onita’s leadership, Petaluma businesses have a strong voice in the community, allowing them to thrive and give back to residents in so many ways.”

“Her vision and energy make Petaluma a better place for all. I commend her on her dedication and service,” Sen. Dodd added.

PACC members and community leaders second those sentiments often.

Pellegrini was appointed in 1994. She has owned a real estate agency and a gas station. She also was a legislative aide for Assembly member Bev Hansen and once ran for Sonoma County supervisor. She credits the experience with heightening her interest in politics and giving back to her community.

As chamber CEO, she forged solid relationships with the City Council and elected officials. She has overseen production of an annual business directory and community guide, street maps and other useful publications. She’s been involved in events such

Have Breakfast With the Mayor Petaluma Mayor Teresa Barrett

will provide the eye openers in a breakfast speech at The Petaluma Women in Business (WIB) breakfast on Wednesday, May 8, from 7:30 through 9 a.m. at the Palms Grill, 100 S. McDowell Blvd.

After more than a decade of service on the Petaluma City Council, Barrett was elected Mayor of Petaluma last November. Her breakfast speech will center on what she’s learned on her journey into politics.

Barrett is a resident of Petaluma since 1979. She received her bachelor’s degree in International Relations from San Francisco State University and her master’s in Economic History from University of California at Los Angeles. She also completed the UC Master Gardener Program in 1985. She is a member of many local, regional and international organizations including COTS, Rebuilding Together, Sonoma County Historical Society and is a

lifetime member of the Petaluma Museum Association. Her public service career also includes 9 years on the Petaluma Planning Commission.

Member Values Community ConnectionWhile new Petaluma Area Chamber

of Commerce (PACC) member Michael “Bug” Deakin, owner of Heritage Salvage, 1473 Petaluma Blvd. So., is no stranger to the community, he’s always looking for ways “to engage and be engaged” locally. Chamber membership, he said, seems another good way to connect.

One of his business values, Deakin said, is active participation and connection in the community. “Every time we can reach out and touch somebody in our community...we love to do that.” Deakin has been doing just that for nearly 20 years. His business has been more than the reclaimed building materials and wood for flooring, siding, beams, posts, and architectural elements in homes, businesses, restaurants, yurts, taverns, teahouses and mansions, he sells through Heritage Salvage.

Recent community projects include participation on Petaluma’s Miracle

League ball park and the Salmon Creek Spirit Of Windfall Project where Heritage Salvage helped con-serve the remains of a 370 year old, 165-foot tall, 9-foot diameter redwood; milled the tree into 1x12 slabs, while helping youths involved in the project to stack, sticker, and air dry the wood for sale to benefit local high school environmental education programs.

“No project or order is too big or too small. If you can draw it on a bar napkin, we can build it!”, Deakin has frequently been quoted as saying.

Known by almost everyone locally as “Bug,” one of Deakin’s newest brainstorms, to staunch the effects of corporate giants like Amazon on local retailers, is a plan to revamp the Heritage Salvage yard as a venue where members of the still-to-be-formed “brick and mortar” club of local retailers can stage promotional events. Readying the yard, including a revamp of the “kid zone,” that will feature reclaimed playground

features like a teeter-totter from about 1946, should take a month or two, according to Deakin.

Deakin and some of the Heritage Salvage crew are now showing on national television. “Heritage Hunters” is airing now on DIY Network, Amazon Prime, YouTube, iTunes and Sling.

Even away from his community, Deakin is thinking of ways to build his connection, talking about his plans to begin the “brick and mortar” club once he gets home from his driving tour of Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia where he’s been visiting clients and seeking salvage.

PACC welcomes “Bug” and his 15 member employee “family” to the Chamber and encourages those who don’t know him to introduce themselves—maybe ask him about the “brick and mortar” club.

City Comment - What you need to know from the City of Petaluma

Emergency Preparedness Team Being Formed

Residents interested in learning how to get prepared for—and bounce back from—emergencies and natural disasters and those willing to share that knowledge with other business leaders in the community are being asked to join a new volunteer Business Emergency Response Team.

The Business Emergency Response Team is being formed in a partnership between the Petaluma Area Chamber of Commerce (PACC) and the City

of Petaluma to help spread the City’s emergency preparedness message and assist in checking on businesses after a natural disaster or other emergency.

Event Honors Community Members

Petaluma Citizen of the Year, Bob Tuttle and other community members were honored last month at the Community Awards of Excellence gala, sponsored by the Petaluma Area Chamber of Commerce (PACC), the Petaluma Argus Courier, and the Rooster Run Event Center, but for those who missed the recognition ceremony here’s a quick recap of the honorees.

Next month’s Petaluma Business will also feature some photos of the notable annual community event honoring some of the city’s finest citizens.

Citizen of the Year Tuttle said upon learning of his award, “I am honored to have the award. I feel it’s important for all people to take responsibility for their communities. If you are going to use the resources of a community you should give back to it.” Tuttle has excelled in giving back through his project management with Rebuilding Together Petaluma, a nonprofit that

helps people repair their homes. Other volunteer work includes his participation in international projects with the Petaluma Sunrise Rotary Club. Also, he has helped with Project Graduation, the Boys and Girls Club, Petaluma People Services Center and more.

In addition to Tuttle, other honorees include: Patrick Gerke, Police Officer of the Year; Trevor Steis, Firefighter of the Year; Ohana Construction, Small Business of the Year; Dow Development Labs, Large Business of the Year; Frank Gambonini, Excellence in Agriculture; Dan Hubacker, Excellence in Education; Paul and Anne Greenblatt, Service to Seniors; The Miracle League of the North Bay, service to Youth; Lagunitas Brewery took the “Sumpin’ Special Award; and Russ McDaniel was named Volunteer of the Year.

Petaluma Elks Present Award Petaluma Area Chamber of

Commerce member and owner of Quality Printing Services, Inc., David Adams was presented with a top citizen award at the Petaluma Elks lodge officer installation in March. Adams was named for the annual award for his work in the community including his service as chairman of the Petaluma Salvation Army Advisory Board, and on the board of “Keeping Music in the Schools”, which produces the Petaluma Music Festival. Adams is also active in Petaluma Sunrise Rotary. In addition

to being owner of Quality Printing, Adams is a realtor with Coldwell Banker.

Public Affairs Director NamedPetaluma Area Chamber of

Commerce (PACC) member Kaiser Permanente has named former PACC board member Judy James as public affairs director for the Marin and Sonoma County Service area. James was previously director of external affairs for Comcast’s North Bay division.

James will now be responsible for

community benefit, community and

government relations, membership

growth and retention and media

relations for Kaiser. James also

worked for the Sonoma County Farm

Bureau for 17 years and ultimately

served as the executive director.

Security System Providers Combine

Petaluma Area Chamber of Com-

Systems, recently announced the

purchase of one of Petaluma’s oldest

and largest security system providers,

K&R Security, Inc., according to a

company spokesman.

Karim Salih, president and operator

of K&R Security, also announced his

retirement along with the sale. Salih

and his wife plan to remain in the

Petaluma area.

“In announcing my retirement,

I was careful to select a security

system provider with over 48 years

of combined experience, not only in

security systems, but access control

systems, surveillance systems,

and fire alarm systems. Advanced
