How to Take Good Pictures With Your SmartPhone LynAnn King

of KingSings PR is a marketing strategist, pub-licist and au- thorized local expert with Constant Con-tact. She part-ners successful small businesses and entrepreneurs to deliver marketing communications, special events promotions and media campaigns.

We used to have to buy a fancy camera, or hire a photographer, to get those professional photos. Now, thanks to smartphones, we can take high quality photos.

Being a good photographer is not as simple as pointing and shooting. The good news though, is that it does get better with practice.

Here are a few tips:

• Look your subject in the eye. Direct eye contact can be as engaging in a picture as it is in real life. When taking the picture, hold the camera at the person’s eye level.

• Use a plain background to show off the subject you are photographing. Remember to move distractions our of the background.

• Use flash outdoors. Bright sun can create unattractive deep facial shadows.

• Look for patterns and colors. Matching background patterns with colors in wardrobe makes an artistic splash.

• Move in close, rather than using the zoom, step closer. But not too close, as the picture can get blurry.

• Wait for the auto-focus. Allow your smartphone to capture each face with the focus square. Let the subjects know that is happening, so you don’t get frozen type smiles.

• Mix it up with vertical and horizontal, so you have choices on using your images in different ways. Adding photos into video b-rolls requires horizontal.

• Organize your photos on your

computer to make it easy to find them, especially under pressure. Create named folders, and name each photo. If you have multiple similar photos, use the name-1, name-2, name-3 format so they lineup together.

Use your Smart Phone every chance you get. Post on your social media accounts. Practice, Practice, Practice, to keep getting better. Finally, just have fun clicking away!

A Century of PACC Membership for Mortuary

Parent-Sorensen Mortuary and

Crematory celebrates 110 years

as a Petaluma Area Chamber of

Commerce (PACC) business member.

This hometown institution got its

start in 1856 when it was first located

on Third and B Streets in downtown.

It was originally known as Blackburn

Funeral Home, owned and operated

by Charles Blackburn. In the 1920s,

John C. Mount acquired controlling

interest in the funeral home and

renamed it John C. Mount Funeral

Home. He also relocated the home to

East Washington Street.

Art Parent, a member of a pioneer

Petaluma family, joined John Mount

in the late 1930s, and eventually took

control of the business in the mid-

1940s. He renamed the home Parent

Funeral Chapel and relocated it to

Keokuk Street.

The Sorensen Funeral Home,

founded in 1925 by William Sorensen,

was originally located on the corner

of Washington and Keokuk Streets

in the Healey Home. When Sorenson

died, the mortuary was operated by

Oscar Pope and later his son, Robert

Pope. The Popes moved the business

to Petaluma Boulevard.

In 1977, Martin D. “Buzz” Rodgers

and James M. Smith bought Parent

Funeral Chapel from Art Parent. In

the early 1980s, they bought Sorensen

Funeral Home from Robert Pope.

Rodgers and Smith consolidated

the businesses into Parent-Sorensen

Mortuary at 850 Keokuk Street,

the Parent Funeral Chapel location,

where it still stands today.

Through years of changes in

locations and owners, the value of a

PACC membership lasted to make

this business a symbol of community

support and values.

The Buzz on New Chamber Members

Hawkwood Hill Farm at 1002 Chileno Valley Road, is a 240-acre working horse farm with an established equestrian facility and

ideal paces to host a unique corporate event, enjoy a special dinner or gathering or celebrate a wedding. Equestrian exhibitions at the farm include dressage, show jumping and more. There are also yoga training, road and mountain biking, hiking, running and racing trails, hiking and nature walks offered.

filming in Sonoma County with a

record increase of 110 percent in

economic affect and new programs

in the works could bring the county

an even bigger boon, according to a

report recently issued by the County

Economic Development Department

and the film office.

In 2015, Sonoma County reached

$4,062,500 million in economic

impact for the year, a 110 percent

Film Commission is in the process

of developing regulations, program

guidelines and other procedures to

administer the newly expanded film

and TV tax credit program.

In addition Creative Sonoma, a

program that brings together and

supports the creative community

and the creative industries in the

county will be working to dovetail

film production’s coordination and

an eye to increasing the list of eight
