retreat, please see the January newsletter. Additionally, see Debby if you would be interested in making a T-shirt quilt for pay or repairing a vintage quilt. She has been contacted with these requests by persons outside the guild.

Program – Becky L., V.P. Programs, introduced Fern Royce who presented “Confessions of a Whole Cloth Quilter”. Keep up your curiosity, explore and have joy are Fern’s recommendations for pursuing the art of quilt making. And just how does one do that? Keep Up Your Curiosity – Know that there are any number of quilt making styles, one that will fit you to a T, if you keep looking and learning. Explore – Overcome the fear that prevents you from getting started, from making a mistake. Begin simple and build on it. Remember that your mistakes as well as your successes bring opportunity for growth.

Find a style that appeals to you and master it. Fern’s examples: whole cloth and string quilts. Once you’ve learned some basics, it’s OK to liberate yourself from constricting instructions, rules about sewing and from comparing yourself to others. Fern’s recommendations: use it as it is.-It’s OK when log cabins have different sized center squares. Use saved bits and pieces to create something new and beautiful. Begin in the middle and work your way outward as in a medallion. Float one fabric on top of another. Consider the grays. Too short-add on, too long-cut it off. Go foundation free. Copy a vintage quilt using current fabrics; no matter who you copy, your quilt will reflect you. Have Joy! – Share what you’ve learned, become a guest speaker, teach a class, make friends along the way. You may even win prizes or be featured in a magazine one day! Thank you, Fern. You’ve shown us yet more ways to unleash our own creativity and have fun with it. And, as you

said, “We will know we’ve made a successful quilt if it twinkles when the lights are dimmed”. Visit: www.fernroycequilting.com

Fern Royce teaches at Petaluma’s own Quilted Angel, an Affiliate of PQG. See their website for class information.

Business – Opportunity Quilt Egg-stravaganza – Each member is encouraged to sell raffle tickets for Egg-stravaganza. Packets are available at the registration table. Please write your name on the back of each stub you turn in.

PETALUMA QUILT GUILD FEBRUARY 2019

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Happy Valentines Day! All you need is love.....and a sewing machine..... and some fabric and thread.....and you can spend what is often a cold and rainy month of February

making quilts! There is something cozy about working on quilts during the winter months. The weather outside doesn’t matter when you are chain piecing at the machine with a mug of coffee or a cup of tea at hand. Whether you are making a quilt for your Valentine, finishing up a UFO or stitching up a top for COTS, February is the month to get some quilting done!

Speaking of COTS, Ellie O. says her inventory is down. Let’s do something about that! Pick up a kit from her table at our next meeting and give it a go! And if you do venture outside your sewing room this month, make sure to take in our exhibit at the Petaluma Library. Many thanks to our members who are displaying their quilts and to Gayle S. for organizing it. Maybe we will inspire somebody to make a quilt and even join our guild! Of course, our big opportunity for marathon quilting this month is our Walker Creek Retreat, an event guaranteed to bring food, fun and quilters together.

Hoping to see you there, Sue and Marilyn

Julia Bettinelli Jensen, Best of Show Award

at the June 2019 Sonoma Marin Fair

The Thursday Threads, a mini group started by Petaluma Quilt Guild members, announced at the January Guild meeting that they are offering a Best of Show quilt award in honor of Julia Bettinelli Jensen. Julia is both a Thursday Threads and a Petaluma Quilt Guild founding member. She passed away February 26, 2018.

This Best of Show award is for a quilt made by a group, club, or organization. The winner will receive a Rosette and a $50.00 cash award. All groups who make quilts as opportunity quilts, and to raise funds through raffles or auctions are encouraged to submit their quilts to the Sonoma-Marin Fair to compete for this award. Julia would be proud to see her name honored this way since she was a prolific quilt maker of beautiful hand sewn and hand quilted quilts.

PETALUMA QUILT GUILD FEBRUARY 2019

Moonlight Quilters of Sonoma County - Wine Country Quilt Show Changes to Quilt Show Entries

Wine Country Quilt Show Entry Process for 2019

For the second year, Wine Country Quilt Show (June 1 and 2, 2019, Veteran’s Memorial Building) will feature Special Exhibits. If you are wondering what a Special Exhibit looks like, it is a grouping of items that several individuals made with a common theme. Some examples are "Telephone Quilts" or the Pointless Sister's annual exhibit. One person heads up the exhibit, gathering the information and perhaps even all of the quilts, depending if she/he wants that responsibility. There are already a couple of Special Exhibits planned for the show. If you and a group of quilters would like to enter a Special Exhibit these are questions you need to answer: 1. Does your collection of entries require special signage? 2. Does your collection of entries require special hanging and/or display requirements? 3. Does your collection of entries require someone to manage the entries (forms, drop-off, pick-up, hanging, labels, etc.)? If all answers are no, then your collection is called a "Challenge." Each entry of a challenge will be entered individually by the owner of the entry making note of the name of the "challenge" in the STANDARD ENTRY FORM. These entries will be grouped together by the Quilt Show Layout Chair and labeling will be handled in the regular manner by the Quilt Show Entry Chair. If you answer "yes" to any of these three questions above then there must be a single "Lead" person who will coordinate the entire group/collection. The lead person will complete the Special Exhibit Entry Form on line for each entry in the collection. There are no printed Special Exhibit Entry Forms. The Quilt Show Layout Chair or her designee will work with all lead persons in handling the special exhibit to assure that the entries are processed and displayed to their best advantage. So determine if your entry(ies) are yours alone and not part of a Special Exhibit. If that is correct, then you enter like you do every year. One quilt per entry form (online entry is preferred). The entry fee is now $10 (one to five quilts). The increase happened as we are attempting to offset part of the cost of the poles and draperies that we use for display. The cost, like everything else, has risen over the years, and the quilt show committee has agreed to continue to rent poles and drapes.

Please contact me, Joanne T., Quilt Show Layout Chair or Trina J., Quilt Show Entry Chair if you have any questions. Thank you, Joanne T., Quilt Show Layout Chair
