Leadership Project Done Before Graduation

Just before their graduation on June 16 from the 10-month long Petaluma Area Chamber of Commerce (PACC) Leadership Petaluma program about 20 Petaluma area citizens completed the beautification and restoration of the iconic wrist wrestling statue and created a pocket park around it on the corner of Petaluma Boulevard and Washington Street

The graduation ceremony that takes place from 530-730 pm at Springfield Place 101 Ely Blvd is the culmination of nearly a year of commitment from each participant to devote one day a month to learning about the Petaluma community in the areas of business government non-profits and more Leadership program participants also promised to complete a final community service project that enhances the city

The 2016-2017 Leadership program participants spent time educating themselves and gaining first-hand experience in specific subject areas that include business agriculture education and the arts They also initiated a fundraising campaign to raise the money and procure the

materials and services to accomplish the restoration of the statue and to create the serene seating area for the Leadership Park Project The project was completed on May 2

The project was originally begun by John Maher (Petaluma Pete) who allowed the Leadership class to pick it up after his wife became ill The Leadership class received two benches from the Petaluma Outlet Mall that they refurbished by sanding and varnishing the wood and painting the metal sides A contractor put down two slabs of cement for the benches and Chris Stevick refurbished the statute North Bay Landscape owner Jeff Pottorff removed the weeds and put in mulch

This year the class will follow in the tradition of more than 240 Leadership alums The program which begins its thirteenth year in 2017 has graduated more than 240 men and women mdash many of whom hold leadership positions in the region For more information about Leadership Petaluma see wwwpetalumachambercomComm_Leadership_Program_New asp
