Dear Friends:

It is our pleasure to present the YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region’s Annual Report for 2012. The end of 2012 marks 146 years that our Y has been providing children, adults and families in this region with vital programs and services to help keep our community healthy.

We are able to do this in large part because of the relationships we have built with our partners, volunteers and donors. These allies are essential to our ability to provide the tools, supports and resources necessary for our members and participants to thrive.

In 2012, partnerships with our schools helped deliver our Y Kids Academy program to grade 6 students in the National Capital Region, resulting in 600 children learning firsthand the importance of being healthy and active for life.

Our partnership with the City of Ottawa also facilitated the introduction of the TRY Supportive Housing Program for Women. 2012 marked the completion of our first year running the TRY program and additional support received through the City’s Housing and Homelessness Investment Plan allowed us to nearly double the amount of space available to those in need.

Volunteers are the heart of the Y. As a charitable organization, the extraordinary service of volunteers is what allows us to provide our community with access to programs and services that are fundamental to living a balanced and healthy life.

In 2012, an important volunteer committee completed their last year running the Tee Up for Kids Golf Tournament.

This dedicated and loyal committee served an incredible 10 years at the helm of this event. It is thanks to these volunteers that nearly $350,000 was raised and 650 girls were given an opportunity to experience Camp Davern.

Every dollar donated to the Y is a dollar invested in the future of our community. In 2012, financial support enabled us to serve 76,000 people in the National Capital Region.

With tremendous support from donors at all levels, we were able to realize the completion of our Strengthening the Heart of our Community Capital Campaign in 2012. Reaching our fundraising goal of $15 million, we revitalized and expanded our facilities to meet the needs of our growing community.

With our partners, volunteers, and donors by our side, we are honoured to share a commitment to our mission and a passion for the people we serve. Thank you for helping us impact the lives of so many.

A Message to Our Community

City of OttawaA partnership with the City of Ottawa allowed the Y’s Housing Services to shift from being an overflow shelter to a recognized, official shelter that can accommodate families. The 44 room shelter now serves an average of 100 men, women and children daily. The first year of the TRY Supportive Housing Program for Women - a supportive shelter for women who are homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness - came to a close. Understanding the critical need for housing programs devoted to women, the City allocated additional funds through their Housing and Homelessness Investment Plan and made it possible to nearly double the size of the TRY program from 22 to 43 rooms.

ValorisA longtime supporter and partner of the Clarence-Rockland Y, the Valoris organization helped create a joint Family Day celebration with the Y in 2012. More than 1,000 visitors from across the Clarence-Rockland municipality enjoyed a free day of fun, family oriented events and free access to the Y. The success of this event has established a new tradition.

Employment OntarioIn partnership with Employment Ontario, the Y Enterprise Centre helped empower 148 entrepreneurs to follow their dreams and open their own business. Showcasing the program’s talent, the Centre hosted its largest Y Biz Expo to date, drawing over 500 attendees and showcasing more than 100 new businesses - an increase of 30 per cent.

Canadian Tire Jumpstart™Canadian Tire Jumpstart confirmed their commitment to partner with the Y, and helped parents with the cost of enrolling children in Y Kids Club. This recreational before and after school care program focuses on staff-led sports and activities while bridging the gap between a child’s school day and parents’ work day. Jumpstart funding helped ensure that children are able to have access to recreation-based care, regardless of their financial means.

Strong partnerships are essential to the Y’s ability to offer life-changing programs and services. Partners work collaboratively with the Y to share our mission among their networks and facilitate access to the Y’s services by lending their guidance, resources and expertise. Together, we deliver vital services to our most vulnerable residents and are able to have a great impact on our community.

Not long ago Cheryl Davis was a regular Ottawa resident, enjoying a full life and working at a job she loved. But things changed quite suddenly once she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Cheryl focused her energy on getting well, and as time went on and treatments took their toll, she was unable to continue working. Medical bills piled up as she was fighting for her life.

After a successful surgery 1 1/2 years ago, Cheryl was given a clean bill of health and considered a cancer survivor. Though she had been able to gain her physical health back, she was only just beginning to acknowledge and cope with the emotional toll that her illness had taken on her. With no income, and now struggling with mental health issues, Cheryl found herself homeless.

It’s been more than 7 months since Cheryl came to live at the Y with the TRY Supportive Housing Program for Women, and since then, her life has taken a complete turn. With caring staff and access to the services she needs to thrive, Cheryl has found a place where she is able to heal fully and work towards her goals of gaining stability and living independently.

“The TRY program is powerful and unique,” says Cheryl. “I have such admiration and respect for the staff that have helped me claim my dignity back, and I am so grateful for the support I have here.”

Y Kids MarathonAlmost 1,700 children participated in the Y Kids Marathon, a children’s race that takes place as a part of the Ottawa Race Weekend. This ‘marathon’ encourages children to track activity leading up to race day, where they complete a short 1.2 km run. More than 200 volunteers helped run a three day expo and the Y Kids Marathon itself, and hosted water stations at the Half Marathon and Marathon runs. The Y’s participation with in Ottawa Race Weekend earns positive attention and inspires children to stay active.

Y Kids AcademyThe Y Kids Academy completed its first year in 2012, and was an incredible success involving children from 135 schools in eight school boards across our region. This program - which educates grade six students about leadership, proper exercise and healthy lifestyle choices – is taught predominantly by a dedicated team of volunteers who are passionate about child and youth fitness. 65 Y Kids Academy volunteers made certain that the 637 graduates in 2012 were empowered and celebrated for their hard work.

Fundraising Event CommitteesVolunteer committees played a crucial role in organizing and participating in key fundraising events during 2012. • The third annual Just Dance fundraiser raised $8,500

to support the Y Strong Kids Campaign in 2012, a total of $35,000 has been raised over three years.

• A sold out tournament with 144 eager golfers, the third annual Y Golf Classic tournament raised $120,000 in 2012, and has raised over $360,000 overall in support of the Strengthening the Heart of our Community Capital Campaign.

• 2012 marked the final year for the Women Tee Up for Kids golf tournament. The incredible volunteer committee dedicated 10 years to running this event, and in 2012, a sold out tournament contributed $55,000 to support Camp Davern. Over the 10-year run, $348,000 was raised and 650 girls were sponsored to experience camp.

Volunteers are the heart of the Y. Without the commitment and support of 700 volunteers in the National Capital Region, the Y would be unable to continue helping individuals and families reach their potential. Whether through fundraising, program delivery, event organization or as a member of the Board of Directors, volunteers show leadership, provide instruction, and act as Y ambassadors in the community.

In 2012:


Summertime had always meant fun for 10-year-old Hannah Lovell and last year she had her sights set on returning to camp. But when economic circumstances put summer camp out of her family’s reach, Hannah wasn’t sure a getaway would be possible.

Still recovering from a car accident, Hannah’s mom, Erin, didn’t want tight finances to get in the way of summer activities. She was still hopeful that she would be able to provide both her daughters with a great summer experience.

A chance encounter with a Y staffer at the Ottawa Children’s Festival last year opened Erin’s eyes to the possibility of a Y camp sponsorship. She pursued the idea, and was thrilled to learn that Hannah would be able to attend Camp Davern, an all-girls overnight camp near Perth, ON, as a sponsored camper.

“I loved it,” says Hannah. “Every day I would wake up and think, ‘I’m at Camp Davern. I’m going to have the best day ever!’”

Though typically shy, Hannah thrived at camp and retuned completely refreshed.

“Swimming and playing games were my favourite things,” Hannah explains. “Davern was the best camp ever!” Hannah hopes to return to Camp Davern again this year, and she’s now looking forward to being a camp counsellor one day.

Erin credits Y volunteers with making it all possible. “The Y was there for my family during an uncertain time in our lives. For all the time, energy and work volunteers put into organizing fundraisers and supporting programs like these, there are so many children and families that benefit. For that, my family is truly grateful.”

Jim O’Grady Memorial Hockey TournamentThe Jim O’Grady Memorial YMCA-YWCA Hockey Tournament is an annual event that was established to honour local lawyer and passionate Y member, Jim O’Grady, who passed away in 2009. Ottawa’s legal community has embraced this tournament. In 2012, over $20,000 was raised for the Y for a total of $61,000 since the tournament began.

Capital Improvements and Membership GrowthDonations supported the completion of capital improvements as well as program expansion leading to a dramatic rise of memberships at the Taggart Family Y (27%) and the Ruddy Family Y (31%). Corporate members also grew in 2012, and the Y welcomed 20 new corporations to the program.

Support From Community OrganizationsThrough the generous donation of paint from European Glass and Paint and a team of volunteers from Deloitte, the Second Stage Youth Housing Program received a much needed facelift. Residents and volunteers worked together and painted the floor’s halls and doorways.

As a charitable organization, the Y’s ability to nurture and inspire families in our community depends greatly on the generosity of donors. They play a central role in realizing the Y’s mission, and through their support, the Y is able to have a great impact on those who are most vulnerable.

With help from donors, the Y provides shelter for the homeless, assists the unemployed, and ensures that those without means can access supports needed to live a healthier life.

Yousef Riyati and his family know firsthand how Y donors can change lives.

As a busy mom with 5 kids, Zienab Shehadeh knew that her children would benefit from being active and spending time with other kids their age. The cost of enrolling everyone in sports and community programs was simply out of reach, so Zienab turned to the Y for help. Over a decade later, her son Yousef has been a Y member nearly all his life, and has been able to participate in Y programs, because his family received a sponsored Y membership through the Y Active Assist program.

Yousef is grateful for the opportunities that the Y has given him – and he’s been a very active member! In addition to swimming and basketball, he is part of the Y’s Pre-Teen Club, and is a graduate of the Y Kids Academy, where he learned the value of living a healthy and active lifestyle. But it hasn’t ended there. Yousef also loves being a part of the community at the Y and visits nearly every day to meet friends and Y staff, whom he sees as role models. He is more confident, has a happy social life, and values being fit – all things he credits the Y with helping him achieve.

None of this would be possible without the generosity of Y donors. They make it viable for the family to participate in programs and events they otherwise might not be able to.

“Yousef and his siblings are learning the life skills they need to develop into caring, conscious and confident children,” said Zienab. “I am grateful to Y donors for helping my children be a part of the Y community.”

Strengthening the Heartof our Community

About theCapital Campaign:

Fundraising Goal AchievedIn 2012, efforts were focused on raising the remaining $5 million by the year’s end. The dedication of our donors, Campaign Cabinet, Board of Directors and staff was phenomenal, and it is with great pride and gratitude that we are able to report our goal was realized and total pledges of $15 million were confirmed.

Bonnenfant Y Outdoor Education and Leadership Centre The Bonnenfant Y Outdoor Education and Leadership Centre in Dunrobin celebrated its grand re-opening after the completion of extensive upgrades and renovations. More than 650 people took part in a family day at camp and staff were able to showcase the new elements and improvements to the facility. Over 2,100 campers and 135 schools and user groups access this site each year.

Closest to the Cause The launch of the “Closest to the Cause” campaign engaged staff participation in the final phase of fundraising efforts and the staff-led campaign was able to secure its target of $50,000 in pledged donations.

In 2008, the YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region launched the most ambitious community fundraising initiative in its history, the Strengthening the Heart of Our Community Capital Campaign.

The goal of raising $15 million to support a $35 million expansion and revitalization of Y facilities was necessary to meet growing demand for the Y’s essential services. In 2012, $5 million was left to raise in order to complete the Campaign.

Capital Campaign Cabinet


Capital Campaign funds were used to:

Revitalize the Taggart Family Y, a gathering place for downtown Ottawa's diverse clientele. Providing recreation, child care, employment training, language assessment and emergency shelter and supportive housing, the Taggart Family Y is the flagship of the Association.

Expand the Ruddy Family Y by 20,000 square feet, allowing the Y to provide first rate health, recreation and child care services in one of Canada's fastest-growing communities.

Redevelop the Bonnenfant Y Outdoor Education and Leadership Centre (BYOC), ensuring that future generations will benefit from leadership training, an appreciation of nature, and the opportunity to be active outdoors.
