A Message from Gemma Giovinazzo and Denise Christopherson

On behalf of YWCA Hamilton’s staff and Board of Directors, we are proud to share with you just a few of the highlights that made 2015-16 an exciting and overwhelmingly positive year. We are pleased to report a year marked with growth and innovation as we successfully implemented the third year of our ambitious five-year strategic plan.

In 2015, as our 125th anniversary celebrations came to an end, we celebrated two other milestones. On March 10, 2016 the Women of Distinction Awards celebrated 40 years of recognizing the remarkable achievements of women in Hamilton. Just one week later, on March 17, our 55+ Active Living Centres marked 40 years of providing affordable programs and services that enrich and support independent active living. Congratulations to everyone who made both of these milestone celebrations a huge success.

Earlier this year, YWCA Hamilton lost one of its greatest champions and supporters, Bettina Campbell, who until her death at 91 was our honorary board president. Bettina was a member of YWCA Hamilton for nearly 80 years, and in this time she was chair of almost every YWCA committee in existence. YWCA Hamilton certainly would not be what it is today without the dedicated efforts and passion of Bettina Campbell.

Please let us extend our gratitude to each of YWCA Hamilton’s supporters. We know that we couldn’t do the work we do for women, girls, and their families without your steadfast support. We hope that you take the time to read this annual report to celebrate our milestones and benchmarks with us.

As we enter the fourth year of our strategic plan, we aim to continue promoting a culture and organization that embraces innovation, creativity, and excellence as we work to meet the diverse demands of our community for the future.

Strategic Priorities

Now in the third year of our ambitious five-year plan, YWCA Hamilton continues to strive toward an innovative, fresh approach to service delivery to impact the lives of women, girls, and their families. The following strategic priorities outline just some of the highlights from the 2015-16 year.

Strategic Priority A: Facilitate Opportunities and Enhance Services and Supports for Women and Girls

Strengthen services and supports for women and girls to improve their health and wellbeingIn the third year of our strategic plan, YWCA Hamilton continued to build on our commitment to the health and wellbeing of women and girls by creating health and wellness programs, services, and resources that leverage community capacity and current and new partnerships.

We are pleased to report that in 2015-16, YWCA Hamilton created new sales initiatives that allow us to bring our health and wellness programming to seniors, workplaces, and condos. We also introduced new aquatics programming for families and children in the Crown Point neighbourhood, a project funded through the Hamilton Community Foundation. We’re also pleased to share that the South Asian Punjabi Program pilot will continue as a regular, ongoing program.

The Women’s Health Network Feasibility Study was completed in partnership with the North Hamilton Community Health Centre and Civicplan. It was conducted to identify community interest in a Women’s Health Network in Hamilton and directions and priorities this network should take.

Totally Awesome Young Women’s Breakfast

Increase economic opportunities for women Thanks to a generous gift from The Allen and Milli Gould Foundation, YWCA Hamilton has increased economic opportunities for women through a small business development program. We also launched a pre-apprenticeship program for women to be trained as general machinists and industrial mechanics (millwrights) in a project supported by provincial funding.

Support housing solutions for womenYWCA Hamilton has a long history of supporting housing solutions for women, especially those who are marginalized in society. In 2015, we opened South Place, a model of support for transitional age young women in Developmental Services. As you’ll read later in this report, we have also introduced a breakfast program for women in our Transitional Living Program and we’re continuing to offer meals through Be the Recipe for Change, a culinary experience with a social purpose.

Increase presence and impact in the overall community and in high-need neighbourhoodsTo continue servicing Hamilton’s high-need neighbourhoods, we introduced all-day licenced child care at Memorial School in Hamilton’s east end. In April 2016, we celebrated our annual Totally Awesome Young Women’s Breakfast, which brought together more than 500 young women from high schools across the city.

Strategic Priority B: Be a Strategic and Influential Voice and Presence for Women and Girls

Enhance our networks and points of influence to positively advance women and girls’ issuesYWCA Hamilton’s 6th annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event raised an impressive $92,129 to help support YWCA Hamilton’s essential programs and services for women, girls, and their families. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes continues to raise YWCA Hamilton’s profile in the community and awareness about serious issues that affect women, including poverty, homelessness, and mental health.

For 40 years, the Women of Distinction Awards have elevated women, celebrating their vast achievements in the Hamilton community. On March 10, 2016, YWCA Hamilton bestowed the honour on seven women and one business at a gala event at the Hamilton Convention Centre.

Continue to transform systems that negatively affect women and girlsYWCA Hamilton staff and volunteers participate at key decision making tables in Hamilton to raise issues that are important to women, girls, and their families. We’re pleased to share that YWCA Hamilton is active on 57 committees represented by more than ten staff and management.

Strategic Priority C: Inspire Women’s and Girls’ Leadership to Create Strong and Resilient Communities

Strengthen the leadership capacities and competencies of the women and girls we serveYWCA Hamilton continued to mobilize women and girls to take on leadership roles and to influence change in the community. In 2015-16, members of the Young Women’s Advisory Council (YWAC) worked with mentors to start their own businesses. They organized and led events, including Pride Swim and Sundaes during Hamilton’s PRIDE week and the Strong Women, Strong Girls Project in partnership with YWCA Canada. The project empowers and mobilizes young women to take on leadership roles in the local community.

Strengthen the leadership of the YWCA Hamilton volunteer and staff teamYWCA Hamilton believes in giving our volunteer and staff team the education and training they need to provide resources and opportunities for inclusive and equitable communities. We are pleased to now offer Trans-Inclusion Training to all staff who have completed our Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression (ARAO) training.

Strategic Priority D: Continue to Develop an Innovative, High Performing and Sustainable Organization Develop creative sustainable service and program modelsYWCA Hamilton is committed to focusing on sustainability while improving the outcomes for women and girls. In 2015-16, we continued working toward our goal of providing women in our Transitional Living Program access to healthy and nutritious food through a breakfast program that provides three meals per week. Be the Recipe for Change provided over 1000 meals through the generous support of community members. Be the Recipe for Change is a fundraising initiative to support meals provided through At the Table. At the Table is a social enterprise that has an objective of providing training opportunities and healthy meals to women who access the Transitional Living Program.

Promote a culture and organization that embraces innovation, creativity and excellenceOur new part-time volunteer coordinator has increased the number of volunteers who help us provide YWCA Hamilton’s essential programs and services. The volunteer program grew by 25%. 126 new volunteers were recruited,

Strategically steward the physical assets of the organization for maximum effectiveness YWCA Hamilton has begun to leverage opportunities and funding for new and refurbished facilities and equipment, a need that was identified in the strategic plan. We look forward to an upcoming renovation of YWCA Hamilton’s kitchen and café that will allow us to better provide supports and services to women in our Transitional Living Program.
