Dear friends,

In 2010, we touched the lives of more than 62,000 adults and youth to help address issues related to homelessness, lack of job skills, domestic violence and racial injustice —  a 9 percent surge from 2009.

U.S. Census data shows that children have been particularly hurt by the recession. In Washington state last year, 18 percent of children lived in households with incomes below the national poverty level. And statewide, more than 47 percent of single mothers with children under 5 were living in poverty. That means nearly half of our state’s single mothers with young children struggle to meet life’s basic needs. Meanwhile, cutbacks in public support mean even less is available to help, which will drive a greater number of families into homelessness.

The casualties of the Great Recession give even more urgency to our work helping women and families facing poverty, violence and discrimination. But there’s good news — thanks to our community partners, donors and staff, we continued in 2010 to provide a host of opportunities such as job training, mental health counseling and youth services to combat the social inequities that fuel such economic disparities.

Our partnerships enabled us to move forward on two key housing projects in 2011: YWCA Passage Point and YWCA Family Village at Issaquah. Passage Point, in Maple Valley, is an innovative program of housing and supportive services for people emerging from the corrections system and working to reunite with their children. Family Village Issaquah provides much-needed affordable housing to individuals and families on the Eastside. Both developments received support from King County, the State of Washington, and many individuals. Passage Point’s partners also included Federal Home Loan Bank and the Washington State Housing Finance Commission, while the City of Issaquah, Port Blakely Communities and A Regional Coalition of Housing (ARCH) were among the key partners who helped develop Family Village Issaquah.

In order to ensure that we can continue to invest in women and respond to expanding community needs, we launched the YWCA Women Empowered (WE) Campaign — our bold initiative to raise $26.5 million by the end of 2012. Our Board of Directors had the incredible vision to begin this campaign as a means to weather the economic storms that we anticipated would result in devastating funding cuts at the state, county and local levels. The WE Campaign provides security for today and a promise to future generations.

We look forward to a day when our services are not in such high demand. Until then, your support makes it possible for us to continue to advance the self-sufficiency of women and their families. Thank you for being such an important part of our work.

WE CAMPAIGN HIGHLIGHTS

WOMEN EMPOWEREDA YWCA Community Campaign

“The YWCA advances the self-sufficiency of women and their families. The Women Empowered Campaign is the YWCA’s bold response to increased requests for support during this difficult economic period. It will take the full commitment of our entire community to ensure that women and families continue to move forward. Please join the effort!”

— YWCA Board Member Bavan M. Holloway, The Boeing Company

The YWCA is uniquely poised to focus investments on women and to be the agent of social change. Through the YWCA Women Empowered (WE) Campaign, we will raise $26.5 million in annual, capital and endowment funds for the YWCA by December 2012. WE empowers women to transform their lives and achieve lasting independence today and for future generations.

Who WE are:• Women of all ages, races and faiths, and their families. • Women supporting the YWCA | Women supported by the YWCA | Women inspired by the YWCA. • Men who know that the well-being of their mothers, sisters, wives and daughters is inextricably

tied to their own well-being.

Why invest in women? The Great Recession demonstrates that households are increasingly dependent on women’s earnings and economic security. Yet, women still make lower wages for comparable work, are more likely to care for children or aging parents, and have fewer personal assets to help them weather difficult times. Now is the time to invest in a strong foundation for our community by shoring up resources to ensure women have access to: affordable housing, child care, education and job training, domestic violence resources and health services.

What WE does:• Raises $26.5 million in operating, capital and endowment

funds for the YWCA by December 2012.• Supports core YWCA programs that serve more

than 60,000 people in two counties each year.• Boosts affordable housing, child care and

community services in the region by building the YWCA Family Village at Issaquah.

• Ensures the strength of the YWCA Endowment for future generations.
