Annie

• For the first few scenes Annie should be dressed like the other orphans: ragged layers of clothing, laced boots or shoes, tattered socks an oversized dark red/burgandy sweater, unkempt reddish hair. Annie will also need a locket with a matching 2nd piece (or BFF necklace with both halves)

• Annie will need a winter dress coat to wear over her orphan clothes for scenes 4 & 5.

• During the last half of scenes Annie should wear her trademark short-sleeved red dress with white collar. She should also have white socks and black shoes with straps. Her hair should be neat.

Orphans

• It is important the orphans look ragged and tough. The orphans might wear shirts and sweaters over skirts, smocks or flannel nightgowns; layering is very important – matching is not!! Their hair can be extremely unkempt.

• Hair accessories could be fashioned from ripped pieces of clothes.

• Molly should have a scruffy teddy bear.

Miss Hannigan

• Miss Hannigan should always look a bit out of sync with her surroundings. Her hair should look like she has just woken up. Her dress should gaudy and cheap (1930’s floral print) and perhaps have a slip hanging down from under the dress. She should wear stockings that could be falling down & tan or black character shoes (high heels would suffice, but she will be dancing so they mustn’t fall off). She should wear lots of beads or a boa as well as a whistle on a rope around her neck.

• Additional accessories might be slippers and satin bathrobe, hair curlers or net.

• She will need a long coat when visiting the Warbucks mansion. Miss Hannigan’s dress color should contrast to Annie & Grace

Oliver Warbucks

• He is always dressed formally, in a dark suit, white shirt, vest, and bow tie. A tuxedo jacket with black bow tie and cummerbund would be ideal.

• He also needs a hat (top hat), coat and scarf.

• For a more festive holiday attire, changing to a white jacket for scene 7 is nice but not necessary.

• Optional rubber skullcap to create the bald effect.

Rooster Hannigan and Lily St. Regis

• His costume should be as colorful as his personality. His hair might be parted and slicked back. A mustache would be appropriate. Rooster’s clothes should be gaudy. Suspenders, a fedora, and a money sign tie would be good. He will need a different jacket, hat, and pair of glasses when he is in “disguise” as Mr. Mudge.

• Lily should be outlandish and gaudy. A bright-colored dress with matching handbag and pumps are ideal. She will have a compact and lipstick in her bag. A bizarre wig or tight curls can help complete the look.

Bundles McCloskey

• He can dress in all white, with a dark-colored belt, large bowtie, and deliveryman’s cap. Pants and shoes should be of a deliveryman’s variety. A half-full laundry bag is the crowning touch.

Page 16: Annie Jr. Costumesgibraltarmstheatre.weebly.com/uploads/1/3/5/8/13584204/costumes… · •Annie will need a winter dress coat to wear over her orphan clothes for scenes 4 & 5. •During

Grace Farrell • Grace always dresses with thought and

style. It is suggested (but not imperative) she wear a different costume for each scene in which she appears. She should look professional, possibly wearing a suit and hat for her first entrance in scene 3 (light blue would be nice). She carries a handbag, and wears gloves.

• A coat (fur would be perfect) for scenes 4 & 5.

• Grace needs a holiday dress, suit or even stylized holiday sweater with skirt for scene 7. She should always appear business-like but classy.

Page 17: Annie Jr. Costumesgibraltarmstheatre.weebly.com/uploads/1/3/5/8/13584204/costumes… · •Annie will need a winter dress coat to wear over her orphan clothes for scenes 4 & 5. •During

Drake and Male Servants • Tuxedos or tails would be ideal for the male servants.

Formal wear shops are often generous about donating out-of-style or unusual-sized tuxedo jackets to schools. Resale shops are another excellent resource for jackets and used tuxedo shirts. Plain white button down shirts with bow ties or ascots could be a good alternative.

• Drake should have a different tie or jacket (or a fancy vest) and white gloves to set him apart from the other servants. He carries his nose a bit higher than the rest.

• Servants need to be dressed and groomed neatly, with nothing out of place.

• All cast members should have mansion attire to double as mansion staff if they are able.

Annette & Cecille, Mrs. Greer & female servants

• The female servants should wear a black skirt and blouse (leotard/body suit) with a white apron from home, and black shoes. Aprons can be fashioned from oval white lace doilies by sewing a waistband ribbon to one edge of each doily (this ribbon is then used to tie each “apron” around the waist. A short piece of 2-3inch eyelet can be pinned to the hair as a headpiece.

• Cecile & Annette - match eachother but their costumes could be more tailored or their headpieces different from other female servants to distinguish them from the other servants – perhaps tall, pleated cylindrical hats. Accessories might include feather dusters or bath trays.

• Mrs. Greer and Mrs. Pugh – the costumes for the housekeeper and cook can add color and variety to the mansion scenes. They might consist of striped or solid pastel dresses with full aprons. Various kitchen/cooking accessories might dangle from Mrs. Pugh’s apron. Mrs. Pugh might wear a bakers cap. Each should have her hair pulled back in a bun and wear hair trim that matches her costume.

• Servants need to be dressed and groomed neatly, with nothing out of place.

• All cast members should have mansion attire to double as mansion staff if they are able.

Usherettes • Usherettes must look like Radio City ushers

of the period: a pillbox hat, jacket with gold buttons and trim, black skirt or pants. Gold trim and epaulets can be added to a plain blazer to achieve the desired effect. The pillbox hat can be made out of cardstock and trimmed to match the jacket. White gloves can give a nice touch.

• Each usherette will need a flashlight. They can also carry trays with candy and popcorn. At least one of the usherettes must have a tray with cups or boxes filled with popcorn.

Star-to-be • This character has just arrived from out of town to take

NYC by storm. She arrives wearing a modest traveling clothes: a hat, a long coat or cape, and perhaps a scarf. She carries 2 handbags (suitcase & hatbox).

• As the song progresses, her coat is removed to reveal a flashier star-quality look…like an evening dress and long evening gloves.

• Accessories to match her star-quality look might include: boa, high-fashion hat, jewelry, fancy purse

Page 22: Annie Jr. Costumesgibraltarmstheatre.weebly.com/uploads/1/3/5/8/13584204/costumes… · •Annie will need a winter dress coat to wear over her orphan clothes for scenes 4 & 5. •During

Lt Ward • If you cannot obtain a real policeman’s

uniform for Lt. Ward, a navy blue shirt and matching pants will work well with a policeman’s hat and black shoes. Gold buttons added to a suit jacket would also work. Be sure to create an emblem for the shirt and hat.

• Lt. Ward must carry a “night stick” as an accessory. A mini baseball bat would suffice.

• White gloves are optional

Dog Catcher and Sandy • The dog catcher’s costume should look like a uniform

– perhaps a dark shirt, matching pants and a hat with the words DOG CATCHER on it. The dog catcher can also carry a big net and leash.

• Sandy can wear a furry sandy-colored hooded one-piece costume with floppy ears and tail. Sandy needs a large red bow around her neck and a box to fit in for Scene 11.

Page 24: Annie Jr. Costumesgibraltarmstheatre.weebly.com/uploads/1/3/5/8/13584204/costumes… · •Annie will need a winter dress coat to wear over her orphan clothes for scenes 4 & 5. •During

FDR & Louis Howe & Boy flirt • Roosevelt should wear a suit, tie and

perhaps small spectacles. His hair should be grayed, and he might carry a cigarette holder. He should sit in his wheelchair at all times, with a blanket over his legs.

• Louis Howe should look very professional, with a dark colored jacket and tie.

• Boy flirt (NYC scene) should wear dark pants, suit jacket and tie, with a winter scarf around his neck, and possibly gloves.

Bert Healy, Boylan Sisters, SFX Artist • Bert Healy should look as “smooth” as he sounds

on the air. His costume should be flamboyant, with a striped jacket or vest, bow tie and skimmer hat.

• Bert Healy and SFX could coordinate.

• Boylan sisters costumes must coordinate and be 1930’s appropriate, pink is good.
