Orphan Analysis

The third opening sequence I have chosen to analyse is from Orphan. The film was released in 2009 and was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. I have chosen to analyse this film because I like that it is a dream sequence that shows you what happened before the story of the film happens.

How the narrative is set up

This sequence focuses on the story of how Kate and John lose their baby.

They chose to do this so the audience can get an understanding of why Kate and John chose to adopt.

It starts with them arriving at the hospital to have their child.

Kate goes to have her baby but they soon realise that the baby has died and she will have a still birth.

How the characters are introduced

The first character we see is Kate.

This tells us that the film will mainly focus on her and her problems. John doesn’t feature much so we know this is her dream.

Kate is shown to be very distressed.

This shows us how she is coping with the news that her baby has died and how she is still struggling months later.

How the genre is established

There is a lot of blood in the opening sequence.

This is a clear representation of the genre. As this film is a horror/thriller, it will include lots of blood as that is one of the expected conventions to see.
