According to the United Nations data, there are 140 million orphans in the world. Most of the orphans - who have lost their families, left unattended and unprotected - live in regions where wars and crises are intense. We have been working and producing projects for 29 years so that orphans can live in their own lands with their relatives without breaking them away from their culture. We’re continuously working to support their education, health, food, clothing

and shelter needs.

We provide regular support to more than 100 thousand orphans in 50 countries and Turkey. Through the projects we carry out, we deliver periodic

aid to 800 thousand orphans in 120 countries.

9

ORPHAN SPONSORSHIP SYSTEM

With the Orphan SponsorshipSystem, you can sponsor an orphan as a person, family, institution, group of friends, class or school. By donating

you can make a significant contribution to the education, health, food, clothing

and housing needs of the orphanyou sponsor.

OrphanEducation Sponsorship

We continue to support our orphans until they become independent. With the Orphan Education Sponsorship, we support orphans over the age of 18 to continue their education until they have a job. Our orphan youths, who have the opportunity to complete their education this way, can now stand on their own feet and contribute to their family, surrounding and country.

My name is Rizkina. I live in Aceh, Indonesia. I was only three years old when my father passed away and left me to become an orphan. Our life was very difficult after my father’s death. Of course, it was my mother who faced the biggest chal-lenge. She tried so hard to provide a good life for the family.

I started primary school at the age of six and completed it with flying colors. My mother saw that I was successful and willing to conti-nue my study. That made her want to send me to a better school, but we had no financial means for it. We were desperate. In 2010, I learned that there was an orphanage for girls far from our home. That’s how I met IHH.

I was just going to secondary school when I started staying in the orphanage. I realized that I had to work hard to have a good future. Af-ter completing secondary school, we were accepted to one of Aceh’s best high schools with my friend Wasmi-ani. High school was a little difficult for me at first, but I worked hard to overcome these difficulties and continued to do good in my lessons. The sisters in the orphanage where I

stayed had a big share in this. They have always supported me.

After finishing high school, I got accepted in the Economic faculty at a public university in Aceh. I was ecstatic. I tried to support my youn-ger sisters and other sisters who stayed in the orphanage during my university years to ease their work.

At the end of four years, I graduated from university in 2020 with a very good GPA. I could finally look for the job I wanted and have better opportunities. However, I decided to be a sister to other orphans and started to work in IHH’s orphanage.

I have spent my life working hard to achieve things. Now I will work to be an example to other orphans and sponsor dozens of orphans in the future. I want to thank my brot-hers and sisters in Turkey and IHH for supporting us. I will continue to be worthy of them and stand by the orphans for the rest of my life.

Project Sponsorship

Project Sponsorship includes the sponsorship of project-based works such as orphanage, house and school construction or renovation, as well as the provision of educational materials and health services. In addition, we support orphan families to enable them to stand on their own two feet with development projects such as providing them with vocational courses, shops, fishing boats and milking animals. With the help of our volunteers who act as project sponsors, we can complete the construction of an orphanage and have its library, dormitory, kitchen or more rooms built. We are able to cover the annual expenses of one of our 38 orphanages in 13 countries through project sponsorships.

OrphanRelief Fund

Apart from the orphan sponsorships, all donations made to orphans are collected in the Orphan Relief Fund. The donations collected in this fund are then used to renovate orphanages, setting up libraries or dormitories, provision of healthcare, organizing social activities for orphans, as well as purchasing Eid outfits for orphans.

17 When I asked him how old he was, he answered, “I don’t know, se-ven or eight I guess”. Apparently, no one has ever asked him about his age nor did he have the time to stop and think about it. Hasan’s father was martyred when fana-tical Buddhist gangs attacked his village in Arakan about three ye-ars ago. Hasan then had to migra-te to Bangladesh with his mother and younger brother.

Hasan started working for his family, who could not meet their basic needs. While his peers went to school, he would wait at the be-ginning of the slopes with a ricks-haw by his side, because riding the rickshaw that could not climb the hill would give him 1 or 2 Bangla-deshi Taka for each ride. He made a living like this for a while. He was able to get 2 Taka from each rick-shaw he get to the top, which is equal to 5 Turkish Kurus.

One day, as Hasan was wor-king, a vehicle came crashing on him from behind and injured him. There was no way for the family to get him treated, and there was no one to help. Luckily, IHH’s partner organization informed IHH about this and we were able to reach out to him. Hasan received his treat-ment immediately. He was then

placed in Daru’l-I-mam orphanage.

We met Hasan at the Orphanage. When I asked him how old he was he answered, “I don’t know, seven or eight I guess.” I learned about his story from my colleagues. He has never went to school. He’s still reading the Ara-bic alphabet and wants to be a hafiz. He has been staying in the orphanage for two months now. He loves the orphanage food, he loves his bed, and most of all, he loves his friends.

Our orphanage journey started with the occupation of Afghanistan. The orphans who took refuge in Pakistan together with the refugees fleeing the occupation desperately needed a warm and safe home. While our aid projects in Pakistan continued, we decided to find a permanent solution for the orphans. As of today, we have established orphanages in 13 countries, providing a safe living space and preparing the future of orphans who are victimized by wars and crises. We continue to support orphans with the establishment of 38 orphanages, 1 education center and 1 education village.

What’s in the Education Village?

We built our orphan village in Hatay/Reyhanlı for war-torn orphans. In the 990-capa-city village, we meet all the needs of orphans including their education, health, food, shelter and social activities needs in a homely environment. This way we aim to help them overcome their traumas, protect them from malicious gangs, and prepare them for the future safely through various trainings that we provide for them.

27

Barbaros Education CentreWe built the Barbaros Education Center to provide educational support to Ethiopian orphans and their families. While we provide trainings on various subjects in the cen-ter’s conference hall, we implement development projects for orphans’ families with our computer and tailoring workshops. In addition, we organize summer camps that include courses and social activities to assist the orphans’ school lessons.

19 Wherever we went, and whoever we visited in Pakistan, we were greeted like a president throu-ghout our journey. It made them very happy that we came for them from miles away.

We visited orphanages, played games with orphans, and gifted milkers and sewing machines to orphan families. I am so excited to know that now they can make a living without having to depend on anyone. Although this may seem like a small gift, I understo-od what it meant for them when I saw a mother’s eyes. When she hugged me with tears in her eyes, I realized why I was there, and just how small the things that I worried about had been before that day.

I have another heart-wrenc-hing memory. We visited a school for orphan girls. As I was about to leave, one of the girls came up to me and asked, “We are sisters, ri-ght?” I said, “Of course, you are all my sisters.” “Then don’t leave your sisters behind,” she begged.

It was already difficult for me to leave, and when I heard this plea, I didn’t know what to say. I returned to Turkey, but my heart stayed there.

Orphan Solidarity DaysEvery year, our volunteer teams depart from Turkey to visit orphans, distribute aid, open orphanages, conduct on-site inspections, and bring joy to orphans. In addition, we implement development projects for orphan families such as vocational courses, present them with milking animals and opening shops for them. We do this on order to help them stand on their own two feet without being dependent on anyone. We call this “kindness mobilization”, which we conduct every year, during the Orphan Solida-rity Days. Orphan Solidarity Days is one of the most important activities we organize for orphans each year.

33

World Orphans DayWith IHH’s proposal to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in 2013, the 15th day of Ramadan was determined as the World Orphans Day. This way, we have put orphans to be on the world agenda and enable the creation of projects that can change their lives.
