BY DISCIPLINE GROUP

Page 2: Animal Tissue

In multicellular organisms, a group of similar cells with intercellular substances perform specific function, such an aggregation of cells is called tissue. Organs are functional group of many tissues.

In animal organs are made up of four basic types of tissues;

Epithelial tissue Muscle tissue Connective tissue Nervous tissue.

ANIMAL TISSUES

These tissues have distinctive features and specific functions which combine to form functioning organs.

THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

Page 5: Animal Tissue

Nervous tissue is the main component of the two parts of the nervous system; the brain and spinal cord of the central nervous system (CNS), and the branching peripheral nerves of the peripheral nervous system (PNS), which regulates and controls bodily functions and activity

Neural tissues controls the body's responses to the changing conditions. Neurons are the units of neural system, they are excitable cells. The glial cells forms the rest of the neural system, they protect and support neurons. Its functions in receipt, processing and transferring information.

All living cells have the ability to react to stimuli. Nervous tissue is specialized to react to stimuli and to conduct impulses to various organs in the body that bring about a response to the stimulus. Neurons are easily stimulated and transmit impulses very rapidly. A nerve is made up of many nerve cell fibers bound together by connective tissue.

THE NEURON

Page 9: Animal Tissue

A nerve cell that receives and sends electrical signals over long distances within the body. A neuron receives electrical input signals from sensory cells (called sensory neurons) and from other neurons. The neuron sends electrical output signals to muscle neurons (called motoneurons or motor neurons) and to other neurons.

NEURONS

Neurons are specialized for the conduction of nerve impulses. A typical neuron consists of

a cell body which contains the nucleus; a number of short fibers — dendrites —

extending from the cell body a single long fiber, the axon. The nerve impulse is conducted along the

axon

A DENDERITE is a short branched extension of a nerve cell, along which impulses received from other cells at synapses are transmitted to the cell body.

THE AXON

The AXON is a long thread-like part of a nerve cell along which impulses are conducted from the cell body to other cells.
