die Vorzeichen für die analytica sind in diesem Jahr mehr als erfolgver-sprechend: Wir erwarten mehr als 900 Unternehmen aus aller Welt, die an vier Tagen ihre Produkte und Neuheiten für Industrie und Forschung präsentieren. Dabei vertraut die Veranstaltung auf das bewährte Modell mit Ausstellung, wissenschaftlicher analytica Confe-rence und anwendungsorientiertem Rahmenprogramm. Gleichzeitig möch-ten wir mit neuen Elementen die Syner-gien zwischen Theorie und Praxis noch besser stärken. Dafür haben wir uns in diesem Jahr etwas ganz Besonderes für Sie ausgedacht: Erstmals entfüh-ren wir Sie auf der Messe in die reale Welt eines Labors. The signs for this year’s analytica are more than promising. We expect more than 900 companies from around the world that will present their prod-ucts and new developments for re-search and industry. As in the past, the fair is relying on its proven model, which consists of the exhibition, the scientific analytica Conference and the application-oriented program of related events. At the same time, we want to use new elements to make the synergy between theory and practice stronger than ever. To do so, we have come up with something very special this year: For the first time ever, we want to carry you off to the world of an actual labora-

tory at the fair. In Halls A3, B1 and B2, you can gather information on the topics of forensics and clinical diagnos-tics, plastics analysis, and food and water analysis, and experience equip-ment in live operation. More background and other informa-tion regarding the exhibitors, exhibi-tion themes and program of events can be found in our Visitor Guide.

In diesem Sinn versteht sich auch die analytica: Sie bietet Lösungen von der Pro-duktentwicklung bis zur Qualitätskont-rolle, von der Probenvorbereitung bis zur Datenauswertung. Während der analytica Conference und der Foren, den Vorführungen in den Live Labs und natürlich an den Ständen der Ausstel-ler: Auf der analytica tauschen sich Wissenschaftler, Entwickler und Anwender, Gerätehersteller, Entschei-dungsträger und Investoren aus aller Welt aus. Die einen präsentieren ihre Forschung und äußern ihren Bedarf, die anderen bieten neue Analysenge-räte sowie Lösungen – und gemeinsam entwickeln sie Ideen für morgen.

Analytik für alternative EnergienWissenschaft und Industrie arbeiten derzeit mit Hochdruck an der Umstel-

lung von fossilen auf alternative Ener-gieträger. Verfeinerte Untersuchungs-methoden für die Energietechnik ziehen sich daher als Trendthema durch die analytica. In Brennstoffzel-len beispielsweise dienen Edelmetalle als Katalysator, die als Nanoteilchen auf einem Trägermaterial am wirkungs-vollsten sind. Einen Blick auf derart nanostrukturierte Oberflächen ver-schaffen sich Wissenschaftler unter anderem mit Elektronenmikroskopen, die immer bedienerfreundlicher und handlicher werden, wie Uwe Binninger, Tescan und andere Aussteller zeigen. Tescan präsentiert sogar ein Multi-Nanoinstrument, das Elektronenmik-roskopie, Flugzeit-Massenspektromet-rie, Röntgenspektroskopie und weitere Methoden kombiniert.

Horiba Jobin Yvon wiederum hat zusammen mit anderen Unternehmen

und Forschungsinstituten die Plasma Profiling Mass Spectrometry entwi-ckelt. Die Technik eignet sich ideal für die schnelle, auch produktionsbeglei-tende Untersuchung von Solarzellen. Für Forscher, die den Wirkungsgrad von Solarzellen mit fluoreszierenden Beschichtungen erhöhen möchten, gibt es zudem speziell ausgestattete Fluoreszenz-Spektralphotometer.

Von der Produktentwicklung bis zur QualitätskontrolleVor dem Hintergrund der boomenden Nanotechnologie hat sich auch in der Partikelmesstechnik einiges getan, wie mehrere Aussteller zeigen. Noch relativ unbekannte Methoden wie die Feldflussfraktionierung stehen dabei ebenso im Fokus wie verbesserte optische Geräte zur Untersuchung der Teilchen.

Zur Charakterisierung neuer Materi-alien und Produkte hat die analytica 2012 noch mehr zu bieten. Für die Pharmaindustrie etwa haben Labswiss und Pharmatron Geräte im Programm, die den Zerfall, die Bruchfestigkeit oder die Wirkstofffreisetzung von Tabletten bestimmen. JAS wiederum zeigt ein Instrument, das Thermode-sorptionen und Pyrolysen durchführt, aber auch Verwitterungsprozesse simuliert, etwa von Kunststoffen. Mehr zu sehen in Sachen Polymere gibt es zudem in Halle B1 im Live Lab Kunst-stoffanalytik.

Neue Geräte für die industrielle Qualitätskontrolle zeigen Aussteller in den Hallen A1 und A2, darunter ein transportables Rasterelektronenmik-roskop von Jeol für den Einsatz direkt an der Produktionslinie und ein Online-Instrument am Stand von FMS Jansen, das Farb- und Höhenschwankungen von Produkten auf dem Förderband prüft. Zu den Highlights in diesem Bereich zählt auch das tragbare, akkubetriebene Ramanspektrometer von analyticon instruments, das chemische und pharmazeutische

Rohstoffe oder Produkte identifiziert. Das Gerät misst durch transparente Verpackungen hindurch und erkennt tausende Substanzen, sogar in Mi-schungen – einfacher geht es nicht.

Sichere LebensmittelEin weiterer Schwerpunkt der analyti-ca 2012 ist die Lebensmittelanalytik. Die Einrichtung des Live Lab Lebens-mittel- und Wasseranalytik in Halle B2 und eine eigene Konferenz-Session hierzu unterstreichen den Stellenwert des Themas. Mit neuen Werkzeugen für den schnel-len Vor-Ort-Nachweis von Keimen oder Schimmelpilzgiften sichern innovative Unternehmen wie 3M oder R-Biopharm die Lebensmittelqualität. Zudem erweitert sich der Pool an chromato-graphischen, massenspektrometri-schen und anderen instrumentell-analytischen Methoden für die Nah-rungsmittelkontrolle ständig, wie die Unternehmen Thermo Fisher Scientific, Bruker Optik und andere Branchengrö-ßen zeigen.

Lebensmittelkontrolleure profitie-ren besonders vom branchenübergrei-fenden Charakter der analytica. In Halle A3 etwa, Treffpunkt der Biotech- und Diagnostikindustrie, können sie sich über PCR-Techniken und schnelle DNA-Analytik informieren, die Ehec-Keime, gentechnisch veränderte Sojabohnen und vieles mehr schon in Spuren identifizieren.

Daneben finden Besucher hier spezielle Methoden wie den neuen Endotoxin-Nachweis von Hyglos oder den Gluten-Test von Transia.

Auch diese letzten Beispiele aus dem umfassenden Angebot der ana-lytica zeigen: Der sprichwörtliche Blick über den Tellerrand lohnt sich. Die analytica ermuntert dazu und bietet alles unter einem Dach – Know-how für die Analytik- und Biotech-Branche, Ideen für das Labor von morgen und nicht zuletzt Kontakte über Fachgren-zen hinweg. l

total of five halls, more then 900 exhibitors from around the world will

present the latest developments in the sectors for analysis, laboratory

technology and biotechnology. Experience analysis – that is also the

objective of the diverse program of related events including forums, the

conference and Live Labs. Take a look at the highlights of analytica 2012.

Manufacturers of equipment for the analysis, biotechnology and laborato-ry-technology sectors are on the rise. Employment figures and sales are growing, and the industry will be at full strength when it presents itself at analytica. These are the best prerequi-sites, not just for everyone attending the fair, but also for society. After all, if these companies are doing well, they invest in new developments – some-thing that we urgently need given the challenges of the future, like getting a grip on diseases or finally switching to alternative energy sources.

There is no question: Modern analy-sis is what makes technical progress possible in the first place. Sophisti-cated measuring techniques are behind every high-tech plastic, every solar cell and every new medication. This is also how analytica perceives itself: It showcases solutions, from product development to quality con-trol, and from sample preparation to data evaluation. During the analytica Conference and the forums, the dem-onstrations at the Live Labs and, of course, the exhibitors’ stands, scien-tists, developers and users, equipment manufacturers, decision-makers and investors from around the world ex-change information and ideas at analytica.

Analysis for alternative energy sourcesThe scientific and industrial sectors are currently working hard on switch-

ing from fossil fuels to alternative energy sources. That is why elaborate analysis techniques for power engi-neering are a hot topic at analytica. In fuel cells, for example, precious metals serve as catalysts that are most effective as nanoparticles. Among other things, scientists look at these types of nanostructured surfaces with the help of electron microscopes that are increasingly operator-friendly and easy to use, as Uwe Binninger, Tescan and other exhibitors will demonstrate. Tescan is even presenting a multi-nanoinstrument that combines elec-tron microscopy, time-of-flight mass spectroscopy, x-ray spectroscopy and other techniques. Horiba Jobin Yvon, on the other hand, develops plasma profiling mass spectroscopy together with other companies. The technique is ideally suited for the high-speed testing of solar cells, even during the manufacturing process. For research-ers who want to make solar cells with fluorescent coatings more effective, there are also specially equipped fluorescence spectral photometers.

From production to quality controlAgainst the backdrop of booming nanotechnology, there have also been plenty of developments in the field of particle measuring technology, as several exhibitors will demonstrate. The fair also focuses on relatively unknown methods such as field-flow fractionation as well as improved

optical equipment for examining particles. When it comes to character-izing new materials and products, analytica 2012 has even more to offer. For the pharma industry, for example, Labswiss and Pharmatron have equip-ment in their portfolios that can deter-mine the disintegration, breaking strength and release of active ingredi-ents in tablets. JAS, on the other hand, will have a device on display that carries out thermal desorption and pyrolysis, but also simulates weather-ing processes such as on plastics. When it comes to polymers, there will be even more to see at the Live Lab on Plastics Analysis in Hall B1.

Exhibitors in Halls A1 and A2 will present new equipment for industrial quality control including a portable scanning electron microscope from Jeol, which can used directly on the production line, and an online instru-ment from FMS Jansen that detects color and height discrepancies of products on the conveyor belt. High-lights include a portable, battery-operated Raman spectrometer from analyticon that identifies chemical and pharmaceutical raw materials or products. The device takes measure-ments through transparent packaging and recognizes thousands of sub-stances, even in mixtures.

Safe foodAnother main theme of analytica 2012 is food analysis. Having the Live Lab

for Food and Water Analysis set up in Hall B2 and a separate session on food analysis underscores the importance of this topic. Innovative companies such as 3M and R-Biopharm are devel-oping new tools for the rapid local detection of bacteria and mycotoxins to ensure food quality. In addition, the pool of chromatography, mass spec-trometry and other instrumental analysis techniques for testing foods is constantly growing, as Thermo Fisher Scientific, Bruker Optik and other major manufacturers will demon-strate. Food inspectors in particular profit from the interdisciplinary char-acter of analytica. In Hall A3, where the biotech and diagnostics industry will be located, they can gather informa-tion about PCR techniques and rapid DNA analysis that can be used to identify EHEC bacteria, genetically modified soya beans and many other substances in traces. Visitors will also find information about special meth-ods such as the new endotoxin detec-tion solution from Hyglos or the gluten test from Transia.

As these few examples from the extensive range of exhibits demon-strate, thinking outside the proverbial box really is worthwhile. analytica will encourage you to do so and features everything under a single roof – i.e. know-how for the analysis and biotech industry, ideas for the laboratory of the future and, most importantly, contacts in multiple disciplines. l

Mit den Live Labs erwartet die Besu-cher im Messejahr 2012 ein besonde-res Highlight. Auf Laborzeilen in den Hallen A3, B1 und B2 präsentieren internationale Hersteller ihre Produkte im Live Betrieb und in realer Laborum-gebung. Täglich, jeweils um 10.30 Uhr, 13.00 Uhr und 15.30 Uhr, geben nam-hafte Experten in Plenarvorträgen einen Überblick über die verschiede-nen Themenkomplexe und gewähren Einblick in ihre Forschungslaboratori-en. Neben den Referenten führen Appli-kationsspezialisten Versuche durch und demonstrieren, wie die Produkte und Gerätesysteme in der Praxis eingesetzt werden. Aber nicht nur in der Foren-sik, auch in der Klinischen Diagnostik sind moderne Analysenverfahren und molekularbiologische Methoden es-sentiell. Vor der Kulisse des Live Labs erhalten interessierte Besucher Einbli-cke in die neuesten Entwicklungen der Doping- und Atemgasanalytik, der Ultraspurenanalytik und der Detektion pathogener Organismen. Das Programm im Live Lab Forensik und Klinische Diagnostik ist vielfältig. Einer der Höhepunkte ist der Auftritt von Deutschlands bekanntestem Kriminalbiologen Dr. Mark Benecke am ersten Messetag. In seinen Vorträgen zeigt Benecke in spektakulärer Art und Weise, wie mithilfe der DNA-Analytik Rückschlüsse auf fiktive Verbrechen und Täter gezogen werden können.

Wie sicher sind unsere Lebensmittel?Ob Dioxin in Eiern, mit Antibiotika belastetes Hühnchenfleisch oder Pestizide in Erdbeeren und im Oran-gensaft: Lebensmittelskandale holen uns im Alltag immer wieder ein. Um toxische Inhaltsstoffe in Nahrungsmit-teln nachzuweisen und die Qualität von Lebensmitteln zu überprüfen und zu überwachen, kann auf analytische Verfahren längst nicht mehr verzichtet werden. Und auch bei der Frage, wie sauber unser Trinkwasser ist, müssen sich Verbraucher auf sichere Kontrol-len verlassen können. Gelangen schäd-liche Stoffe in das Grund- und Oberflä-chenwasser, so haben sie nicht nur negative Auswirkungen auf den Men-schen, sondern die gesamte Umwelt ist betroffen und die Problematik von

östrogen wirksamen Substanzen ist noch gar nicht abzusehen.

Aktuelle Schwerpunktthemen aus dem Bereich Life Science stehen im Mittelpunkt des Live Lab Lebensmit-tel- und Wasseranalytik in Halle B2. Experimentalvorträge beleuchten die gesamte Analysenkette von der Pro-bennahme über chemisch-physikali-sche Trennverfahren und molekular-biologische Methoden bis zum Daten-management. Premiere: analytica 2012 features Live Labs

For the first time ever, analytica invites visitors to enter the real

world of an actual laboratory. On each day of the fair, various Live Labs

in Halls A3, B1 and B2 will host live demonstrations on the topics of

forensics and clinical diagnostics, material analysis with a focus on

plastics, as well as food and water analysis.

The Live Labs promise to be a special highlight at the 2012 fair. Laboratory benches will be set up in Halls A3, B1 and B2 where international manufac-turers can demonstrate their products in actual operation and in a real labora-tory environment. Each day at 10:30, 13:00 and 15:30, well known experts will make plenary presentations that give participants an overview of the various topics and insights into their research laboratories.

Besides the speakers, application specialists will conduct experiments and demonstrate how the products and equipment systems are used in actual practice. The object is to dem-onstrate the entire analysis process as it occurs in routine laboratory practice as well as extremely specific issues in high-end analysis. Visitors

can also speak directly with the spe-cialists of various manufacturers, discuss specific application cases and have innovative methods and tech-niques explained.

Tracking down the culprit Analysis and molecular-biology meth-ods are in dispensable in criminology. To ultimately catch the culprit, analy-sis is a critical element in the search for clues. Analysis techniques and molecular-biology methods are essen-tial not just in forensics, but in clinical diagnostics, as well.

Against the backdrop of the Live Lab, interested visitors will receive valuable insights into the latest devel-opments in doping and respiratory-gas analysis, ultratrace analysis, and the detection of pathogenic organisms.

Innovative analysis systems and select coupling techniques, PCR tech-nology and evaluation and archiving methods are available for solving complex questions of this type. The program of events in the Live Lab on Forensics and Clinical Diagnostics is diverse. One of the highpoints will be an appearance by Germany’s best-known criminal biologist, Dr. Mark Benecke, on the first day of the fair. In his presentations, Benecke will give a spectacular demonstration about how DNA analysis can be used to draw conclusions about fictitious crimes and criminals.

How safe is our food?Whether it comes to dioxin in eggs, chicken meat full of antibiotics or pesticides in strawberries and orange juice: Food scandals continue to plague us in everyday life. To prove the existence of toxic substances in food and test and monitor food quality, analysis techniques have been indis-pensable for quite some time. In addi-tion, when it comes to the question of safe water, consumers must be able to count on reliable testing.

If harmful substances get into our ground and surface water, not only does it have negative consequences on people, the entire environment is affected. Furthermore, there is no end in sight when it comes to the problems associated with estrogen-mimicking substances.

The Live Lab on Food and Water Analysis in Hall B2 focuses on the latest hot topics in the life-sciences sector. Experiment presentations will shed light on the entire analysis chain, from taking samples to chemical and physical separation techniques, molecular-biology methods and data management. It will examine the development of innovative equipment systems as well as the importance of allergen and GMO detection, mycotox-ins, pesticide and residue analysis as well as hygiene for consumer protec-tion.

All things plastic The multifaceted nature of and poten-tial applications for plastics appear limitless: From medicine to the elec-tronics industry, we encounter these

polymer materials everywhere we go. The material is subjected to a number of different requirements and condi-tions.

The Live Lab on Plastics Analysis focuses on polymer analysis and presents future-oriented analysis and testing devices that allow laboratory workers to take home important impe-tus for daily laboratory tasks, from sample preparation to instrumental analysis, ways to test the effects of weathering and evaluation techniques. It also features experiment presenta-tions that examine the latest trends and developments in the sectors for blend analysis, copolymerization and additivation as well as damage assess-ments.

analytica Finance Day: Finanzierungs-tipps für UnternehmenDer wirtschaftliche Aufschwung hat 2010 auch Teile der deutschen Life Science-Unternehmen erfasst. Umsät-ze sind gestiegen, Venture Capital-Investitionen haben sich erhöht – al-lerdings basieren die Steigerungsraten auf der schwachen Basis des Krisen-jahres 2009. Unterm Strich bleibt die Finanzierung schwierig. Einer der Gründe, warum es manchen Unterneh-men weiterhin an Kapital fehlt, ist, dass immer weniger deutsche Investo-ren im Biotech-Sektor tätig sind. Außer-dem gehen manche Beteiligungsge-sellschaften neue Wege und unter-stützen nur noch einzelne Projekte anstelle ganzer Unternehmen. Vor allem für kleine und mittlere Biotech-Unternehmen bleibt die Finanzierung deshalb immer noch extrem schwierig.

Ein Weg aus den roten Zahlen sind beispielsweise Kooperationen mit großen Pharmaunternehmen, die nach wie vor Partnerschaften mit innovati-ven Life Science-Unternehmen su-chen.

Einen tiefen Einblick in die aktuellen Herausforderungen und Lösungen gibt der dritte Finance Day, organisiert von Going Public Media. Im Forum Biotech in der Halle A3 treffen am 20. April Life Science-Unternehmer auf Kapitalge-ber. Vorträge und Diskussionsrunden informieren Interessierte über aktuelle Finanzierungstrends und -modelle rund um die Biotechnologie.

science sector will present their innovations at the joint stands of the

German Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) and in the Inno-

vationArea. For biotechnology companies, Finance Day is the perfect

place to collect information about the latest financing trends.

In cooperation with Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi), this is the third time that analytica is promoting select German start-ups. New companies can afford-ably participate in one of the two “Made in Germany” joint exhibits in Halls A3 and B2 and present their new technologies and business ideas.

At the exhibits of some 20 innova-tive new companies such as Dr. Diet-mar Glindemann, glyxera, inSCREENex, new diagnostics, M2 Automation or PAS-Analytik, visitors can gather information about new cell-screening technologies, innovative gas-analyz-ers that employs a measuring tech-nique that makes extremely high detection sensitivity and selectivity

analytica Finance Day: Financing tips for biotech companiesIn 2010, the economic upswing also affected portions of Germany’s life-science sector. Sales were up, and venture-capital investments increased – although the growth rates were the result of weak performance during the crisis in 2009. The bottom line is that financing is difficult. One of the rea-sons why some companies continue to lack capital is that fewer and fewer German investors are active in the biotech sector.

Furthermore, some investment companies are taking a different approach and are only supporting individual projects instead of entire companies. That is why financing remains extremely difficult, especially for small and medium-sized biotech companies. One way to get out of the red is to collaborate with large pharma companies, which continue to search

for partnerships with innovative life-science companies.

Organized by Going Public Media, the third Finance Day gives an in-depth look at current challenges and solutions. On April 20, life-science entrepreneurs will meet with inves-tors at the Biotech Forum in Hall A3. Lectures and panel discussions will inform about the latest financing trends and models. Mit verfeinerten Methoden vervoll-ständigen Biowissenschaftler das Puzzle des Lebens immer mehr, ob-wohl ihnen für die Messungen oft nur ein paar Zellen oder wenige Mikroliter Probe zur Verfügung stehen. Wie Gerätehersteller diese und andere Herausforderungen der Bioanalytik meistern, berichten sie im Forum Biotech.

Für Proteinforscher hält das Forum gleich mehrere Innovationen parat. New England Biolabs beispielsweise präsentiert PTMScan, eine massen-spektrometrische Technik für die Bestimmung von post-translationalen Modifikationen (PTM) von Proteinen. ForteBio wiederum stellt die Biolayer-Interferometrie vor, eine optische Biosensor-Technik, die Proteine und andere Biomoleküle in wenigen Mikroli-tern Probe misst.

Die rasante Leistungssteigerung von Genanalysen ist selbstverständ-lich ebenfalls Thema im Forum Biotech, unter anderem mit einer Präsentation von LGC Genomics über Hochdurch-satzverfahren für Sequenzierungen,

Die Untersuchung von Proteinen und Nukleinsäuren dient vorrangig einem Ziel: der Entwicklung von neuen Medikamenten und Diagnostika. Mit mehreren Vorträgen richtet sich das Forum Biotech daher gezielt an die Pharmabranche. In-vivo-Imaging von lebenden Zellen und Kleintieren in der Krebsforschung steht ebenso auf dem Programm wie die chromatographi-sche Aufreinigung von therapeuti-schen Proteinen und Antikörpern.

Ein Blick ins Programm des Forums Biotech lohnt sich übrigens auch für Analytiker jenseits der Biotech-Bran-che. Der neue Endotoxin-Nachweis etwa, den Hyglos vorstellt, ist durch-aus interessant für Lebensmittelana-lytiker. Practical tips for the life sciencesBecause it was such a great success during analytica 2010, now it

is entering Round 2: the Biotech Forum in Hall A3. The first three days of

the fair will feature exhibitor presentations, and Friday is Finance Day

(see Page 32).

Bioscientists are using refined meth-ods to complete the puzzle of life more and more, although in many cases, all they have for their measurements are a few cells or a few microliters of sample. At the Biotech Forum in hall 3, equipment manufacturers will report on how they deal with these and many other challenges in the field of bio-analysis.

The Forum actually has several innovations in store for protein re-searchers. New England Biolabs, for example, is presenting the PTMScan, a mass-spectrometry technique for identifying post-translational modifi-cations (PTM) of proteins. ForteBio, on the other hand, is introducing biolayer interferometry, an optical biosensor technique that measures proteins and other biomolecules in just a few micro-liters of sample.

Naturally, rapid improvements in performance in genetic analysis will also be a topic at the Biotech Forum, among other things in a presentation by LGC Genomics on high-throughput techniques for sequencing, SNP geno-

typing and PCR analyses. In addition, bioreagent specialist Bioline will introduce new monitoring tools for the quality assurance of real-time PCR assays.

Analyzing proteins and nucleic acids primarily has one objective: to develop new medicines and diagnostics. That is why the Biotech Forum will feature several lectures that specifically address the pharma industry. The program of events will cover topics such as in-vivo imaging of living cells and small animals in cancer research as well as the use of chromatography to purify therapeutic proteins and antibodies.

Incidentally, analysts who don’t work in the biotech industry will also find that taking a look at the Biotech Forum program is worthwhile. For example, the new endotoxin detection solution that Hyglos is introducing is definitely interesting for food ana-lysts. Long story short: Anyone who is looking for practical tips and inspira-tion for routine tasks in the laboratory will find them at the Biotech Forum. l

Ein tragbares Ramanspektrometer, neue Messmethoden für Nanoteilchen und ionenselektive Elektroden mit Kohlenstoffnanoröhren – schon dieser Auszug aus den Themen des Forums Laboratory & Analytics zeigt, dass die Branche allerhand Neuheiten zu bieten hat. Im Fokus stehen Verfahren für die zukunftsträchtige Nanotechnik. Gleich zwei Unternehmen, Postnova Ana-lytics und Wyatt Technology Europe, berichten über Fortschritte in der Feldflussfraktionierung, die sowohl kleine Partikel als auch Biopolymere trennt und misst. Tescan stellt ein Multi-Nanoinstrument vor, das Bildge-bung, Analytik und Nano-Strukturie-rung kombiniert.

presentations. On the first three days there will be tips for all routine

processes in the laboratory. On Friday, the Forum will hosts analytica

A portable Raman spectrometer, new measuring techniques for nanopar-ticles and ion-selective electrodes with carbon nanotubes – even this excerpt from the topics being covered at the Laboratory & Analytics Forum demonstrates that the industry has plenty of new developments to offer. The forum focuses on techniques for nanotechnology, which has a promis-ing future. Two companies, i.e. Post-nova Analytics and Wyatt Technology Europe, will report on progress in field-flow fractionation, which sepa-rates and measures both small par-ticles and biopolymers. Tescan is introducing a multi-nano-instrument that combines imaging, analysis and

nanostructuring. Thanks to new devel-opments such as the microliter mea-suring cell for conventional fluores-cence spectrometers or UV/Vis spec-troscopy in microplates being pre-sented at the Forum, even minimum sample quantities are no longer a problem. The field of instrumental analysis is also becoming more effi-cient. EMD Millipore has combined IR spectroscopy with a membrane tech-nology that can be used to detect biopolymers. In liquid chromatogra-phy, transferring from HPLC to the more efficient UPLC is getting easier and easier, as Waters and Dichrom will explain. Thermo Fisher Scientific, on the other hand, will report on high-resolution mass spectrometry tech-niques for food analysis.

However, even high-tech analysis can only deliver reliable results if sample preparation and the quality of the reagents are right. The Forum will cover topics such as the treatment of laboratory water for chromatography and the purity of gases as well as new grinding techniques and automated processes for sample preparation. Last but not least, AAC Infotray will present software tools that optimize data management.

nal renommierte Wissenschaftler spannen vom 17. bis 19. April in

Highlights der instrumentellen AnalytikOb Chromatographie, Massenspektro-metrie oder Spektroskopie: Neuent-wicklungen in der instrumentellen Analytik stehen an allen drei Konfe-renztagen auf dem Programm. Ebenfalls am Donnerstag findet ein ganztägiges Spektroskopie-Symposium statt. Es spannt den Bogen von der Element-speziierung in den Life Sciences über die zerstörungsfreie Untersuchung von Kunstwerken bis zur Isotopenana-lytik.

Diagnostik: Im Notfall Atemgase analysierenAuch für klinische Diagnostiker setzt die Konferenz an allen drei Tagen Akzente. Am Dienstag steht die Erken-nung von rheumatischen und Autoim-munerkrankungen im Vordergrund, am Mittwoch die Notfall-Diagnostik. Unter anderem wird Anton Amann, Professor an der Medizinischen Universität Innsbruck, über die Analytik von Atem-gasen sprechen, die als nicht-invasive Untersuchungsmethode hohes Zu-kunftspotenzial besitzt. Für die Erken-nung von Stoffwechselstörungen wiederum stellen Wissenschaftler am Donnerstagvormittag neue massen-spektrometrische sowie genanalyti-sche Verfahren vor.

In Zeiten der 1000-Dollar-Genom-analyse fehlt ein Überblick über Se-quenzierungstechniken der nächsten Generation natürlich nicht. Paul Schaf-fer, Senior Vice President bei Roche Diagnostics in Penzberg, führt am Mittwochnachmittag durch die Session „Genomic Sequencing“ mit namhaften Genomforschern aus dem In- und Ausland.

Nanoteilchen in der UmweltDie viel diskutierte Nanotechnik, betrachtet aus dem Blickwinkel der Umweltanalytik, findet ebenfalls Raum auf der analytica Conference. Industri-ell hergestellte Nanopartikel werden in schmutzabweisenden Wandfarben und vielen anderen Alltagsprodukten bereits eingesetzt. Doch was passiert, wenn die winzigen Teilchen in Wasser, Boden oder Luft gelangen? Schädigen sie die Umwelt? Und wie weist man sie dort nach? Diese Fragen beantworten renommierte Referenten aus der Schweiz, Österreich, Großbritannien und Deutschland in einer Session am Dienstagnachmittag.

Ohnehin lässt die Konferenz kaum ein Thema aus: Auch moderne Aspekte der Lebensmittelanalytik – vom Stero-idnachweis im Schweinefleisch bis zur

Geruchsstoff-Detektion – werden in München erörtert, außerdem neue Methoden der Dopingkontrolle und des Nachweises illegaler Drogen. Dem Dauerbrenner Miniaturisierung von Analysengeräten widmet sich eine eigene Session, ebenso den Multiple-xing-Techniken in der Bioanalytik und der Pulverdiffraktometrie in der Phar-maindustrie. Zudem trifft sich die Branche auf der analytica Conference zum Feiern: Die Fachzeitschrift Ana-lytical & Bioanalytical Chemistry wird zehn Jahre alt und lädt am Dienstag zum Jubiläumssymposium ein.

Kurzum: Für alle an Analytik und Diagnostik Interessierten gibt es keine bessere Plattform als die analytica Conference, um sich auf den neusten Stand zu bringen. Talking science: The industry gatheringFrom respiratory-gas measurements to the non-destructive analy-

sis of art treasures: The analytica Conference informs participants

about trends in modern analysis and covers nearly the entire range of

topics in the process. From April 17 – 19, internationally renowned

scientists will cover the entire spectrum, from science to industrial

application.

Without modern analysis, the develop-ment of new medicines would be impossible, wafer-thin solar cells and other high-tech materials would re-main a bold vision, and many life-threatening illnesses would be recog-nized too late. Thanks to ongoing progress, especially in the fields of analytical chemistry, bioanalysis and clinical diagnostics, that is not the case. What are today’s analysis tech-niques capable of? Where are they still limited, and how can these limitations

be overcome? Every two years, scien-tists, equipment manufacturers, users and decision-makers meet at the analytica conference to gather infor-mation on the latest research and industry trends. They come here to discuss the latest developments at a high scientific level – and how they pertain to actual practice. In more than 20 sessions with a total of 115 lec-tures and a related poster show, the conference gives them a comprehen-sive overview and gives visitors an

opportunity to inform themselves about advancements in their specific areas of expertise.

Highlights in instrumental analysisWhether it comes to chromatography, mass spectrometry or spectroscopy: New developments in instrumental analysis are on the agenda on all three days of the conference. Ralf Zimmer-mann, Professor at Rostock University and Head of the Mass Spectrometry Center at the Helmholtz Center in Munich, will kick off the conference on the first day of the fair with a full-day symposium on photo ionization in mass spectrometry – a versatile method that is just as interesting for the gentle analysis of biomolecules as for the industrial online analysis of process gases. The symposium will feature speakers from Germany, China, the United States and Japan.

Anyone who wants to refresh his or her knowledge in the field of chroma-tography should keep Wednesday open. First, everything in the morning will revolve around LC-MS techniques in bioanalysis. Proteomics and me-tabolomics are on the agenda, as is the analysis of traditional Chinese rem-edies. For the afternoon session, chromatography expert Werner Enge-wald, Professor at Leipzig University, has invited colleagues from Belgium, Denmark, the United States and Ger-many to discuss groundbreaking new developments including carbon nano-tubes and supercritical fluids as mo-bile phases.

Thursday also features a full-day spectroscopy symposium. It covers everything from element speciation in

the life sciences to the destruction-free analysis of artwork and isotope analysis.

Diagnostics: Analyzing respiratory gases in emergenciesThere are also plenty of events ad-dressing clinical diagnosticians on all three days of the conference. The main theme on Tuesday is the recognition of rheumatic and autoimmune illnesses, on Wednesday, emergency diagnos-tics. Among other things, Anton Amann, Professor at the Innsbruck Medical University, will speak about the analy-sis of respiratory gases, which has a great deal of future potential as a non-invasive examination method. When it comes to recognizing metabo-lism disorders, on the other hand, scientists will introduce new mass spectrometry and genetic analysis techniques on Thursday morning.

In times of the 1,000-dollar genome analysis, naturally there has to be an overview of the next generation of sequencing techniques. On Wednes-day afternoon, Paul Schaffer, Senior Vice President at Roche Diagnostics in Penzberg, is holding a session on genomic sequencing featuring well known genome researchers from Germany and abroad.

Participants can gain insights into the rapid development of bioanalysis in the sessions on lipidomics and proteomics on Tuesday, on metallo-mics on Wednesday, and on bioinfor-matics on Thursday. A special high-light: Wednesday will feature a full-day symposium on the topic of mitochon-dria.

Nanoparticles in the environmentViewed from the perspective of envi-ronmental analysis, the much-dis-cussed topic of nanotechnology will also be covered by the analytica Conference. Industrially manufactured nanoparticles are already being used in dirt-resistant wall paints and many other everyday products. But what happens if the tiny particles end up in the water, soil or air? Do they harm the environment? And how can we detect them there? These questions will be answered by renowned speakers from Switzerland, Austria, Great Britain and Germany in a session on Thursday afternoon.

It is difficult to find a topic that the conference overlooks: Modern aspects of food analysis – such as detecting everything from steroids in pork to odorous substances – will also be explained in Munich, as will new meth-ods of testing for doping agents and illegal drugs. The perennial issue of miniaturizing analysis equipment will

be the focus of its own session, as will the topics of multiplexing techniques in bioanalysis and powder diffractom-etry in the pharma industry.

Finally, the industry is also gather-ing at the analytica Conference to celebrate: Analytical & Bioanalytical Chemistry magazine is ten years old and is holding an anniversary party on Tuesday.

To summarize: For everyone inter-ested in analysis and diagnostics, there is no better platform than the analytica Conference when it comes to staying up to date on the latest devel-opments.

As in the past, this year’s program of events is being compiled by the Ger-man Chemical Society (GDCh), the (Ger-man) Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (GBM), and the German Society of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (DGKL). Um wettbewerbsfähig zu bleiben, ist es wichtig, dass sich Mitarbeiter regelmäßig fortbilden.

Ressourcen-optimierte IT-Validierung Die Teilnehmer dieses Seminars lernen die kritischen Stellen in einer Compu-ter-System-Validierung (CSV), an denen sich der Aufwand für die Validie-rung entscheidet, kennen. Das Semi-nar richtet sich vor allem an Qualitäts-manager, Projektleiter und Mitarbeiter, die bereits Erfahrung mit der Validie-rung (CSV) gesammelt haben sowie an Unternehmen, deren Arbeiten unter die Regularien von GxP oder das Medizin-produktegesetz fallen. Im Fokus stehen detaillierte Nutzeranforderun-gen, Einbinden der Hersteller und Lieferanten, alternative Vorgehensmo-delle, Nutzung der Risikoanalyse für eine frühe Erstellung der Testfälle und Vorbereitung des Systembetriebs.

Er berichtet über Akkreditie-rungstätigkeiten, aktuelle Entwicklun-gen und Verbesserungen. Die Seminar-teilnehmer haben im Anschluss die Möglichkeit, Fragen zu stellen. Im zweiten Teil stehen die Erfahrungen des Verbandes Unabhängiger Prüflabo-ratorien (VUP) im Mittelpunkt. Ein Vertreter des VUP stellt dabei die Ergebnisse der Mitgliederbefragung vor. Zum Schluss erwartet die Besu-cher ein Praxisbericht eines privaten Auftragslabors zu aktuellen Überwa-chungsaudits durch die DAkkS an zwei Standorten. Die abschließende Diskus-sion lädt ein, sich über Brennpunkte, Trends und Konsequenzen auszutau-schen.

get started. Visitors who come here can quickly and easily start a conver-sation with HR managers from natural-science or technically oriented compa-nies. Applicants can introduce them-selves, gather information about job openings in the company and discuss individual career options and develop-ment prospects with HR managers.

Indien festigt Position Mit einem Wechsel von Hyderabad nach Mumbai kehrte die analytica Anacon India 2011 an ihren ursprüngli-chen Veranstaltungsort zurück. Die Wirtschaftsmetropole ist vor allem für Aussteller von Analyse- und Laborge-räten attraktiv, da sich hier zahlreiche Hauptabnehmer aus der Arzneimittel-branche und der Chemischen Industrie befinden. Ein weiterer attraktiver Absatz- und Investitionsmarkt ist weiterhin der Life-Science Sektor, einer der wichtigsten Antriebskräfte der indischen Wirtschaft. l

Increasingly stronger networking of international markets is result-

ing in more and more global guidelines. These are always associated

with new requirements that must be satisfied by branches of industry

that use laboratory and analysis equipment. analytica and its global

network of trade fairs help to open doors to these markets.

analytica is firmly established on the Asian market with a total of three foreign trade fairs, i.e. in China, India and Vietnam.

All in all, some 800 exhibitors and 22,000 visitors attended those events the last time that they were held. This year, analytica China marks its ten-year anniversary, giving it a special reason to celebrate.

China is celebrating Since it was founded in 2002, analytica China has established itself as one of the leading platforms for laboratory technology, analysis and biotechnol-ogy in China, and has experienced continuous growth ever since. Among other things, this is the result of the country’s continuing prosperity, which is also associated with new challeng-es. In the meantime, topics such as food safety and quality control have also reached this market.

Vietnam is growingThe newest analytica spin-off, ana-lytica Vietnam, was launched in Hanoi in 2009. In 2011, the fair continued its success in the economic center Ho Chi Minh City. The country is in the midst of a major breakthrough, as evidenced by the latest growth statistics as well as the latest forecasts. In addition, govern-ment subsidies and the emergence of new biotechnology centers are driving this growth.

India is strengthening its position The move from Hyderabad to Mumbai marks the return of analytica Anacon India 2011 to its original venue. The venue is attractive for exhibitors that manufacture analysis and laboratory equipment because it is also home to large numbers of the industry’s major consumers in the pharmaceuticals and chemicals industries. The life-science sector, which is one of the most impor-tant driving forces behind the Indian economy, is another attractive sales and investment market. l
