Is the foundation of your molecular characterization based on measurements without SEC-MALS?

Scientists shouldnÕt have to guess the molecular weights of their samples. But thatÕs pretty much what they do when they don’t use WyattÕs SEC-MALS solutions to determine molecular weights. Only WyattÕs industry-leading DAWN¨ multi-angle light scattering (MALS) instruments make absolute molar mass determinationsÑwithout column calibration or reference standards. When you connect a DAWN to your SEC/GPC system, youÕll determine absolute molar masses completely independent of elution times.

Since 1982, weÕve been committed to solving the toughest macro molecular characterization problems for our customers. Every day, thousands of leading scientists throughout the world depend on our instruments. And more than 9,300 peer-review articles have been published, all of which attest to the versatility and superiority of our unique MALS technology.

Free training and PhD-level customer support come with your purchase, as well as a remarkable, three-day, all-expenses-paid Light Scattering University¨ (LSU) training course in Santa Barbara (US customers only). Our personalized, friendly and accessible customer support staff includes 18+ PhD scientists dedicated to sharing their expertise in chromatography, polymer chemistry, protein science, biochemistry and, of course, light scattering.

ThereÕs no mystery in determining absolute molecular weightsÑjust a superior solution. And by choosing Wyatt Technology youÕll get measurements that are solidly grounded in science, not based on a house of cards.

INTRODUCTION

Analytica 2014 will open its gates for

the 24th time and Munich once again

serves as the gathering place for the

international laboratory-technology,

analysis, and biotechnology industries.

From 1–4 April 2014 the focus will be

on the latest products and innovations

in the laboratory sector, alongside a

varied educational technical programme.

More than 1100 manufacturers from

around the world will be exhibiting in five

halls to give visitors a compact market

overview. In parallel with the exposition,

the international scientific elite will meet

at the Analytica Conference organized

by the German Chemical Society

(GDCh), the Society for Biochemistry

and Molecular Biology (GBM), and

the German United Society for Clinical

Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine

(DGKL). Furthermore, visitors can expect

best practice presentations and lively

discussions in the Analytica Forums.

Here I will give a brief overview of my

personal highlights.

Live Labs and Special Shows

Modern analysis techniques and

innovative biological methods are now

indispensible in most branches of

industry — whether in the production of

medications or quality control of drinking

water. Analytica 2014 will therefore

revolve around the analysis of food and

plastics, as well as genetic analysis and

bioanalysis. These topics will be reflected

in both the trade fair and its programme

of related events, as well as the Live

Labs. Thirty-minute lectures and product

presentations are on the agenda three

times a day at 11:00, 13:00, and 15:00. In

addition to other topics, the lectures will

deal with routine analysis applications

as well as special analysis techniques.

Visitors will have the chance to exchange

ideas and information directly with

manufacturers and experts, have new

products explained to them, and discuss

specific applications.

Whether in research or industry,

employee safety is paramount. This year

Analytica integrates this topic into its Live

Labs in Hall A3 with experimental lectures

on how to avoid fires and explosions.

It will also examine the best ways to

protect employees’ health in everyday

laboratory operations and what measures

are necessary. Exhibitors will also have

the opportunity to present products that

are necessary for safety such as safety

cabinets, gas detectors, and protective

clothing. There will be demonstrations

every day at 12:00 and 16:00 in German

and at 14:00 in English.

Conference

The programme of lectures at

the Analytica Conference covers

the analysis sector in its entirety,

from pharmaceutical analysis,

bioanalysis, and medical diagnostics

to environmental, water, and material

analysis. Held in conjunction with and

on the first three days of the fair, it is

being held in the immediate vicinity of

the fair, at the ICM — Internationales

Congress Centre München, for the first

time. Experts from Germany and abroad

will use the conference to talk about the

current state-of-the-art and development

prospects in analysis, biochemistry,

and clinical diagnostics. You can take

a look at the conference highlights on

page 10 in this issue. Admission to the

conference is included in the price of

admission to the fair.

Forum Laboratory and Analytics

In the Forum Laboratory and Analytics

in Hall B2, the latest products on the

laboratory and analysis market will be

presented. On the final day, the Analytica

Job Day will be held here.

Forum Biotech: Best Practice for

Users

Life scientists use increasingly refined

methods to complete the puzzle of

life more and more, even though they

often have just a few cells or microlitres

available for their analysis. As equipment

manufacturers master these and other

bioanalysis challenges, they report on

their accomplishments in the form of

Best Practice lectures and presentations

in the Forum Biotech in Hall A3. The

biotech region of Munich is considered a

leading cluster for personalized medicine

and targeted therapies. Analytica

therefore places special importance on

this topic with an additional series of

lectures as part of the forum. Lectures

and panel discussions on recent and

future developments and methods are

planned.

Analytica Finance Day

Biotechnology continues to increase in

significance as a key interdisciplinary

technology. However, the question of

reliable financing is still one of the topics

that concerns a number of companies

— one more reason to get tips from

experts at Analytica Finance Day! This

is where start-ups and established

Research-Grade Technology Meets High Productivity

LC-MS/MSInnovation with Integrity

The compact mass spectrometer delivers full sensitivity resolution so there is

no need to choose between resolution and sensitivity. One shot plug and play

acquisition ensures qualitative and quantitative results in one LC run with the

fastest time-to-results. And finally, enhanced dynamic range during real LC time

scales reduces sample preparation, key in high-throughput quantitative applications.

Don‘t accept compromise, choose the compact mass spectrometer.

Nymphenburg Palace was originally

designed as the summer residence

of Bavarian Elector Ferdinand Maria’s

wife Henriette Adelaide of Savoy who

was pregnant with the son and heir to

the throne, Max Emanuel. Initially the

building was a cubic pavilion situated

outside of Munich in the countryside,

but the size of the palace has increased

dramatically over the course of 200

years. Housed within the rococo

and baroque-styled palace is the

magnificent hall, the Steinerner Saal,

which was created by Johann Baptist

Zimmermann and François Cuvilliés the

Elder and spans over two floors and is

opulently decorated. The Amalienburg

hunting lodge is another of the

impressive and lavish rooms created by

François Cuvilliés the Elder; this is the

only lodge of the palace that is opened

in the winter. Guided tours aren’t usually

the skyline, it is easy to find and

offers an impressive gothic entrance

from the 15th century. The original

architect, Jörg von Halspach, is

reported to have dropped dead after

laying the last brick and is buried

on site. It was seriously damaged

by Allied bombings, which left the

skeleton structure and little else intact.

However, it was drastically restored in

several stages from 1947, finally being

completed in 1994.

As an interesting side note, there is

a large footprint on the stone floor as

you enter the building, which is said to

be the Devil’s (the Teufelstritt). There

are two versions of the story, one

states that the Devil was ridiculing the

windowless building and stomped his

foot with glee. The other version claims

that the Devil challenged von Halspach

to make a nave that had no windows,

which he accepted. Once the job had

been completed the architect led the

devil to the one spot in the building

where you could not see the 66-foot

high windows (hidden behind pillars)

and the Devil, angered that he had

been tricked, stomped his foot in rage

leaving his footprint behind!

the animals live according to their

geographical distribution. It was shut

in 1922 but was re-opened under

wanted to show the animals in more

open grounds rather than separated

into their zoological taxonomy. Heck

made a name for himself by successful

breeding programmes at Hellabrunn

the breeding back of extinct species

such as aurochs and tarpan. After

WWII, the zoo had to start up again for

a third time. The site now houses large

This museum is housed within a

14th-century building that has been

sensitively restored and several ceiling

paintings have been uncovered that

date back to 1340. The history of the

building is only one of the delights on

offer here, however, the rest is based on

taste. Visitors can learn about the history

of beer with the culinary-guided tour

that includes beer sampling and at the

end of the tour an enjoyable meal. There

are also beer tasting and beer brewing

courses available, and the museum bar

and restaurant that seats up to 120 is

ideal for parties. The museum is open

Tuesday to Saturday from 13:00–18:00

and the restaurant is open from 18:00–

24:00. Tickets cost €4 for an adult.

SHOPPING

Viktualienmarkt

The Viktualienmarkt is a bustling,

colourful food market at the end of the

pedestrian zone off the Marienplatz. It

has existed on the site since 1807 and

is one of the city’s major attractions. At

the heart of the market is a traditional

maypole surrounded by a beer garden.

It is an excellent place to find fresh fruits,

vegetables, cheeses, and sausages.

Stalls are generally open between 10:00

and 18:00 Monday to Friday and 10:00

until 15:00 on Saturday, however, these

times may vary from stall to stall.

This pedestrian-only area starting at

Karlsplatz and ending in Marienplatz is

where you will find the familiar high street

stores as well as a few smaller boutiques.

You can find plenty of clothes shops,

jewellers, and perfumeries and there are

also plenty of places to eat and drink, so

a whole day could get you lost wandering

around this area of Munich. Be careful

though — it can be extremely busy at

peak times!

Riem Arcaden

The Riem Arcaden is a large indoor

shopping mall at Munich Messestadt,

which is the business/exhibition centre

district of Munich. It takes about 20

minutes on the subway to get there from

the city centre. With over 120 shops and

restaurants, ranging from department

stores to independent shops, all arranged

over three floors, there is something for

every palate.

GETTING AROUND

Public Transport

Probably the best way of getting

around Munich is on public transport.

There are buses, trams, the S-, and the

U-Bahn within Munich, as well as the

Deutsches Bahn if you would prefer

to travel further afield. The city also

puts on night services on a Friday and

Saturday evening. There are plenty

of choices for tickets depending

on what you require and these can

be purchased from service points,

customer service centres, info points,

and several private sellers (such as

kiosks). For more information on public

transport including timetables and

route maps please visit the website:

Bicycles

There are plenty of rental places to get

a bike for your stay in Munich and with

extensive bike lanes it is an easy way to

get around the city.
