Issue 24 24th March 2017 Altruism in our Community Following the terrible incidents in London this week, our thoughts in the academy are of course with those whose lives will have been irrevocably changed by that one day. Enjoying a day out in London, seeing the sights, visiting the Palace of Westminster, or carrying out your daily work in the city, you would not expect to be part of such a tragic incident. On Friday we will pay our respects to both the city of London and the individuals affected by holding a minute’s silence. We will use the peace of our surroundings to send our respect. The theme of our Shenley Horizons curriculum has been altruism this week, and we’ve certainly been impressed by the response of many of our students. Not least is the amount of smartie eating and the tube filling which is currently going on to support our very own Miss Pownall hit her target of raising £1000 for the Isle of Wight Challenge. Later in April she will be completing the challenge and she’s so close to achieving the financial target – now it’s just the final training in order to complete the 106km of the course. Will she make it? Of course she will! With Team Shenley willing her around the course we know that she will do us proud – but the fact that so much of her total has been raised by students filling smartie tubes with their lose change really is something quite special. Each of those tubes signifies just how much we respect the altruism that she is showing in giving up her time to train and complete such a gruelling event. I hope to be able to give you an update on how she did in early May! Mrs L Monk Principal

SPOTLIGHT- SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AND THE LEGAL PROCESS

Shenley Academy is working in partnership with parents to improve school attendance. We would like to congratulate the many parents who make sure their children attend school regularly. It is a parent’s legal responsibility to ensure their children receive appropriate education. Failing to send your child to school regularly without good reason is a criminal offence.

PARENTS FINED FOR PERSISTENT ABSENCE

If your child’s level of absence is of serious concern you will receive a letter advising you about improving attendance. After this, any further unauthorised absence may result in the School and the Local Authority taking legal action. Several parents at Shenley Academy have been issued penalties due to their child’s poor attendance.

Parent A was issued with a £395 penalty fine

Again, we would like to thank those parents who make sure their child is attending school regularly and are therefore benefiting fully from their educational opportunity.

Easter Celebration of Dance

On Wednesday 15th March our youth dancers and UMC dance crew were given the opportunity to attend and be part of an Easter Celebration of Dance at Stourbridge Town Hall. The dance show consisted of 19 different performances, five of which were performed by Windsor High School and Sixth Form who organised this wonderful celebration of dance. We were lucky enough to watch and experience a wide variety of dances. They were inspired by Sia, urban dance, Wicked, dance styles from across the ages and Bollywood. In addition some dances had themes such as war. Overall this was a very exciting and thrilling experience and I am glad I was one of the lucky people to be able to be a part of it. Summer Nicholls Year 8 A word from the teachers… We would like to say a huge thank you to Windsor High School and Sixth Form for inviting us to be part of such a prestigious event. Our dancers were lucky enough to perform in front of a large audience in a professional environment. All of the dancers made us incredibly proud by demonstrating self-belief when performing and being extremely supportive and respectful of the other performers. Well done! Dance Department

UKMT team maths challenge

On Tuesday 7th March, three students – Junho Yoo, Charlie Brayshaw and Jessica Hickman --attended the UK Mathematics Trust team maths challenge event held at King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys. The students were accompanied by maths teacher Miss Bolton. During this event, the students met a new tutor and worked as a group or in partners to answer challenging maths problems which they found interesting and also very tough. Although they found these problems quite difficult, they made sure that they did the best that they could and found the day very fun and useful. Not only did the students meet a new tutor but they met a new pair of students when moving tables and found this an opportunity to understand how students from other schools work in these situations to improve their knowledge of how to work in this environment and others. At the end of the day the students then got the result of 21st place which was an accomplishment and al-so made them feel proud. Jessica Hickman, Year 8, Jupiter 10 It was my privilege to accompany these three students to the annual UK Mathematics Trust team maths challenge. Charlie, Jess and Junho showed great spirit and resilience given that they were the only team of three in the event rather than the usual four students, and faced each problem with creativity and enthusiasm. I was particularly impressed by the teamwork, support and communication they showed during an academically challenging day and what enormous fun they were to be around. They are superb ambassadors for the school and excellent mathematicians who have very bright futures ahead of them. Well done, team! Miss J Bolton, Maths Teacher

Birmingham Rep Theatre On Monday 13th March 2017, 15 key stage three and four students from Shenley Academy performed at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre as part of The Ides of March Festival. The group have been rehearsing once a week for the past two and a half months for a performance of 'Macbeth’. They have been working with Tom Saunders, an external director from the Rep, and have been learning a great deal about the process of putting a performance together. The students were challenged in the form of Shakespeare's language, but managed to remember all of their lines in the final performance. The movements were precise and uniformed and all of the students were confident in the performance. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the performance and it was a great finale to an excellent show. The students were extremely well behaved throughout the afternoon and evening. They acted like professionals and did the academy, the department and themselves proud. A massive well done, thank you and congratulations to the entire cast. It was a really great evening Cast include: Emily Bayliss, Gaeun Choi, Tia Clemmens, Kirran Downing, Nadia Downing, Chelsea Guy, Jessica Hickman, Riya Hussain, Callum O’Reilly, Liam Stone, Eamon Strong, Kloie Thomas-Witter, Lucy Webb, Olivia Weston Drama Department

Pi Day celebrated at Shenley Pi is a very special number that is found by taking the circumference of any circle and dividing that length by its diameter. No matter what size the circle, this division always leads to pi (approximately 3.14) Pi Day is celebrated worldwide every March 14th (March = 3rd month, so 3/14… yes we have to use the American way to make this work, but it is worth it to celebrate this wonderful number) Shenley Academy students wanted to join in the celebrations, and there were a number of circular-based activities taking place during the day including: A free pie given to any pupil who could recite the number pi to 10 decimal places

(3.1415926535…) Every starter in all lessons were based on circles Pupils singing the Circle Song in lessons (look it up on YouTube – it is a great way for pupils to

remember the formulae for the area and circumference of a circle) It was lovely to hear pupils greet staff all day long with the sentiment “Happy Pi Day” and it was indeed a happy day in school. Mr Manners, Assistant Principal Mathematics

Year 7 football – Kings Norton & South Birmingham League

Shenley Academy 7 v 1 Waseley Hills

It was very pleasing to see how the Shenley boys played with positivity and togetherness throughout this match. This was shown in abundance when Waseley took the lead against the run of play, and Shenley players could be heard encouraging one another. The equaliser came soon when Jacob Longley timed his run well to meet a Bradley Walters corner on the volley. The hard working Jack Miller caused problems for the Waseley defence and it was great to see his persistence and reliance pay off when he set up Kyrese Campbell for a goal just before half time. Kyrese was excellent throughout, scoring four in total, although his work rate and integrity defensively was equally impressive. Dillon Lee always displays altruistic characteristics as he works really hard for his teammates and his goal in the 2nd half was well deserved. Jayden Miller finished the scoring with a well taken goal just before the final whistle. Well done also to Nathan Wiafe and Romarnie Henry who both made promising debuts for the team. Year 7 football – Kings Norton & South Birmingham League Kings Heath 1 V 5 Shenley Academy

The year 7 team continued with their winning run, showing excellent team spirit and support for each other throughout th match. However, Shenley again found themselves with much to do after a slow start. Despite dominating possession and territory for most of the first half, Shenley seemed to lack the thrust and desire to create clear openings. Michael Jordan, the great basketballer, said that there are those who wait for things to happen and those who make things happen. Shenley seemed to be waiting at times. The team were, therefore, shocked into action when Kings Heath took the lead through a breakaway goal. As with last week, we were delighted to see the team encourage each other to increase their intensity rather than letting their heads drop. Indeed, it was Dillon Lee who shot from long range to equalise shortly after. Minutes later, good composure from Jayden Miller allowed Shenley to retain possession and force an opening for Jack Miller who finished well.

At half time, Shenley were instructed to win their personal battles and show a willingness to beat their marker to the many crosses that were being put in by Bradley Walters. There was a definite response to this and the team started to dominate further. A free kick on the edge of the box was expertly curled into the corner by Dillon Lee for his second, before Jack Miller also added his second. The team were delighted that Romarnie Henry added the fifth goal, by coolly finishing a cross, which was a nice reward for an excellent performance from him. The team continued to work together, responded well to the challenge we gave to work harder in the second half and showed that they are increasingly proud to be part of the Academy team. Well done.
