From the President ~ Dear Sisters, We are starting our SCVAC New Year!  Since we meet from September to May, it is a new year for our club!  And, what a great schedule of activities Debby Hall (our Vice-President) has put together.  There is something for everyone and all of the activities give you an opportunity to share time with your Alpha Gam sisters. Thirty years ago I graduated from UC Berkeley and returned home to the South Bay.  Little did I know at that time that the Santa Clara Valley Alumnae Club would provide me with a deeper sense of what it means to be a member of Alpha Gamma Delta.  The sisterhood from this group of wonderful women has been a great source of friendship, support and inspiration.  The time as an alumni is a longer journey than our short collegiate

experience.  I am thank-ful to have a "home" to come to with my SCVAC sisters!

From the Foundation“I learned the value of living and leading with integrity. I gained an understanding that one does not need to hold a title to lead, but by Living with Purpose one can lead by example and gain followers in unexpected places and ways. Being a leader is not just a definition; it is a lifestyle.”--Hillary Herr, Gamma Eta, LeaderShape Scholarship Re-cipient

After attending the LeaderShape Institute, a week-long educational experience designed to give young adults the means to be-come extraordinary leaders, Hillary is a different person and a better leader. The experience equipped her with the knowledge to change the world by working toward a vision that is grounded in her deepest values; a skill Hil-lary will use for the rest of her life.

Thanks to donations made by chapters, clubs and alumnae to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, Hillary was just one of the sisters provided the opportunity to attend LeaderShape. Her transformational experience not only impacts her life but the communities in which she will serve, and she will always have Alpha Gamma Delta to credit for her leadership success

PAM STUART ~ ALPHA OMICRON Our older son, Ben, started medical school in

NY and our younger son, Daniel, is spending his Fall Junior semester in Madrid. We spent some time in August down in BAJA, Mex-ico and got

to swim with dolphins and even a whale. We

have a medical mentoring trip planned in No-vember to Vietnam and [email protected]

SARAH CLISH ~ OMICRON Jim and I spent the summer enjoying our out-door space.  We spent some time making it a

more enjoyable place to hang out and benefitted from the fruits of our labor.  And, we adopted our new dog, Bella, who has been with us since the end of July.   Having the sound of not so small feet pattering through the

house is wonderful.   Bella is a sweet soul who loves all people and all dogs! [email protected]

CAROL GREENE ~ EPSILON ! !! ! ! !GAMMA I have had a busy summer. I flew to Cincin-nati in July to attend the VentHaven Ventrilo-

quists Convention. That was four days of laugh-ter, and a great way to just be a part of another world with 600 other ventriloquists from all over the world. Then

ten days later I was fly-ing to Athens. There I explored a lot of Greece, even singing a solo from the stage of one of the amphithea-ters we visited. That was an exhilarating ex-perience hearing my voice come back to me

so clearly. The Ro-mans certainly knew how to design a won-derful natural sound system! We then cruised on at 50-passenger small ship up the Dalmatian Coast, stopping at Dubrovnik, and other coastal Croatian towns. We bused in-land to Zagreb, stop-

ping on the way to walk along the plank walkways of Plitvice National Park, Land of the Falling Lakes. My favorite part of the trip, however, was Bled, Slovenia, where we toured a couple of castles, walked along the shores of two beautiful lakes, and walked through one of the best caves I have ever seen! GINNY SMITH ~ BETA ! I'm sorry I didn't make it to the September meeting, but I just have too much yet to do be-

fore I leave for Europe next week. I'm going on a Viking River Cruise down the Rhine with a group of friends & my youngest daughter!!! So...there will be more to report upon my return along with some (hopefully) gorgeous pic-

tures! Summer has really flown by. I cele-brated my 3/4 of a century birthday (yikes!) at

several parties & time with family & friends, culmi-nating with this great trip from Amsterdam to Basel. " "

" " " " I toured the USS Hornet with my daughters & spent a couple of days in San Francisco watching the Louis

Vuitton races from a friend's condo overlooking Alca-traz Island - wow - quite a sight! I also had some bathroom

re-modeling done - I now have a beautiful walk-in shower which is fabulous!!!  More next time!!! [email protected]

BETTY WYATT ~ DELTA EPSILON Chuck and I have making a mess of the house--how's that for a headline.  I am going

through closets and try-ing to decide what to keep and what to donate or toss.  We now have a guest room again with a clear closet. Meanwhile, the excavation has ad-vanced to the Computer

room and Chuck's room.  As a conse-quence, there are boxes everywhere.    The excitement of the summer was getting to San Francisco to see the Terra Cotta Warriors in late May, The Impressionists at the Palace of the Legion of Honor and The girl with the Pearl Earring exhibit at the DeYoung. Each of these was a full day out with lunch with my sister for two of the shows and with my son for the Palace show.  We ran into a classic car rally at the latter which had an only-in-San Francisco moment.  The parking lot of the Palace was apparently a break stop and all of the cars were parked and participants moving from car to car and visiting when a really gor-geous black Jaguar pulled up. The driver jumped out, armed with a press camera, and a long-legged gorgeous brunette in a bikini, emerged from the passenger side and began striking poses on the Jag.  The rally group immediately all grabbed cameras and gath-ered about model & photographer. When Chuck and I drove off, there were still teen agers to Sr. citizens fluttering andclicking about the Jag and the bikini.  [email protected]

CAROL PESKE ~ ALPHA BETA "I have had a very nice summer. I traveled to Michigan three times to spend time at the lake

with my family. Chris went in May with me and Erich went with me in July. The place where we go has been in my family since my mom was five-years-old. I grew up there with my immediate family and

many in my extended fam-ily. My grandmother would spend the whole summer there and we would get dropped off there and hang out with our cousins. Other times, my parents would vacation there with us. Now the fifth generation is enjoying this very special place on Lake Michigan in Doug-las, MI. I have never missed a summer! We will close up in a few weeks and then begin counting down the weeks until next summer.

CAROL VOSS ~ OMICRON " "My husband, Carl, was in the Navy in 1956-58  in a group of eight guys with whom we have all remained in contact over the years. Every two years or so since 2000 we get together----started in Monterey, then to Maine, to Wisconsin, Hawaii, Texas, a fall color cruise

from Montreal to Boston, an anniversary in Santa Rosa, and in June to the Portland Rose Festival. It is great fun to get together and re-mind ourselves how fortunate we all are to be able to get together after all these years!!  I want to tell you the one major coincidence. Carl was an SAE at Davis and when he re-ported aboard the ship, who was in the chow line but none other than one of his fraternity brothers for whom he was pledge master!!  Of course he is one of our group and is a retired grower in Woodland. " " " "We will be gone for 10 days on a UC Alumni Cal Discoveries tour of Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, and Moab.  While we have been in all 50 states (and Grand Canyon) this part of Utah National Parks we have missed so we are looking forward to it.  " " " "" Carl is a Davis Aggie pomology major who spent his life as an orchardist and then row crop grower. When we relocated to Prun-edale, he became a Master Gardener and we have had a magnificent garden which was on the annual Master Gardener tour in '05. Unfor-tunately, in the last two years, our local deer contingent has been crowded out of the agri-cultural fields due to the leafy greens food safety act (which is a good thing) by fences which has had the unintended consequence of forcing them into our area and the herd has read up on every plant which Sunset says deers don’t eat and has decided to eat all of them to prove Sunset wrong.  If Mr. Voss plants, it we will eat it is their motto!!  For four-teen years Carl has planted a marigold border around our patio, and they never touched them.  While we were in Portland in June after he had planted 84 new plants, we came home to find them all gone!!  We are looking for a willing mountain lion to relocate down here and thin the herd!!  As to fencing, we had an estimate of $11K for 2 sides and the "experts" say any fence should be at least 8 ft tall and electrified. Otherwise, it is interesting to see that the AGD house in Berkeley was sold to Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. [email protected]

LEAH O’DONNELL ~ OMICRON ""I have been off work for several months now (after contracting part time for three months),

and I'm enjoy-ing time with the girls.  Claire (turn-ing 5 in Oc-tober) has just started transitional kindergarten

("TK") at Schallenberger Elementary School.  She is really enjoying her new school and teacher and 30+ classmates!   It has been an adjust-ment to have school 8:15-2:15, with no nap.  She has been melting down around 4 pm and throwing quite a few fits for very silly things.  Hopefully, this will be something that she out-grows, but mommy has been tested quite a bit lately. We are looking into new discipline techniques!  Iris is growing up fast and is al-most two!  She is quite adorable and has con-versations with all of us, and loves inter-acting with her big sister.   I love having time to spend with just her in the morn-ings.  I am also able to keep the house in pretty good order and work on a few home projects like our home office and backyard remodel." " " " "" In July, I threw myself a big 40th birth-day bash.  We celebrated the most awesome decade, the 80s!   I spent way too much time planning all the details for several months prior, but it was fun to have an excuse for a creative outlet.  We went all out for this one, with costumes, 80s music, colored lighting,

backyard movies projected on our garage (Back to the Future & Sixteen Candles), 80’s ice cream treats and candy (remember pop rocks and candy cigarettes?), and lots of 80s

memorabilia, includ-ing Ian's old light bright and an Atari 2600 and lots of games for partygo-ers to enjoy.  It was a blast!"" "" " "

" Over July 4th we went to Michigan to visit my sister and family (as we had done the year before).  It was wonderful to have Claire and Iris bond with their cousins and enjoy all the community 4th activities, including a great pool, parade, fireflies and balmy weather.  In August, we went camping at Big Basin with 10 families from Las Madres Willow Glen (2008 kids).   It has been great getting to know the families these past five years.   I've been able to get to see them even more this year, with the time off this spring and summer. " "" " " [email protected]!

NORMA FRANCE ~ BETA"" "It's been quite an easy-going summer.  The weather has been weird, but my two daugh-

ters and I escaped for a 10-day Alaskan cruise with perfect weather the whole time!  The highs were usually in the high 60's, which was

great.  Our ship (Princess Line) left from and returned to San Francisco, so we could look up to the underside of the Golden Gate bridge on our way out to sea.  The added plus was -- no airports!  The scen-ery was magnificent, and our stops at Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay and Ketchikan were in-teresting and fun.  That was in July, and in August Dick's brother came up from Palm

Springs to enjoy the big car shows at Carmel and Monterey, plus auctions at both locales, plus the biggie at Pebble Beach on Sunday.  That Concours d'Elegance is the crème de la crème, and David had a great time.  I enjoyed his pictures!  (I love to look at the cars, but not for hours on end, so I pass on attending!)  I do miss the people-watching which is almost worth the price of admission! [email protected]

PAMELA MAKER ~ ALPHA BETA I just returned from Cambridge, MA where I helped daughter Meredith get settled into her dorm room at MIT.  We shopped until we dropped, then carried it all up to the 3rd floor

and unpacked everything. She is living in German House, a group of about 20 stu-dents of all ages who

share a section of the New House dorm. Much to our surprise, Meredith participated in Formal Recruitment before classes started and accepted a bid to join Pi Beta Phi! She fell in love with the girls and looks forward to the Greek Life.  At MIT, about 50% of men and 30% of women join Greek houses, so she will be in good com-pany.  The Pi Phi house is right along the river, even closer to central campus than she is in her dorm." " " " Meanwhile, Matt is beginning his freshman year at Los Gatos High School and build his long-awaited biosphere this weekend with his Dad and a friend.  Chris and I look forward to celebrating our 22nd anniversary soon, as I flew to Boston on the actual day! " [email protected]

KELLI MOORE ~ THETA IOTA We have had a fun summer with our daughter. We started swimming lessons with Scarlett in

May, and within a few weeks she was going un-der and swimming several feet with no prob-lems.  We

have been thrilled with how much she loves the pool!  We spent several days enjoying the Children's Discovery Mu-seum, Gilroy Gardens, Happy Hollow, and the bounce houses at Silver Creek Sportsplex. Scarlett also turned three in July, so we had a fun time planning a simple party for her and a few friends. My mom also came to visit for a week or so, and it is always great to have her here.  That meant some extra date nights for my husband and me, which is always appreci-ated.  To finish off the summer we took a trip to Ohio to be with my parents for almost three weeks.  It was great to have my brother and cousins around with all of their children, and everyone spending time together.  We were sad to leave, but happy to get back to a very busy week and pre-school start-ing for Scar-lett.  I am looking for-ward to this year of more firsts for our family :)

DEBBY HALL ~ DELTA XI

I can hardly believe Fall is here and all the craziness that comes with it. School started in

mid-August and I am busy ramping up for the school' walkathon event taking place in a couple weeks. Trevor is enjoy-ing his first

season of competitive soccer and Reagan continues to enjoy playing with herfriends in the rec division. Every afternoon seems to be filled with running them to soccer and/or one of Reagan's multiple dance classes. The relaxing days of summer seem to

be a distant memory already. " We unfortunately had another disas-trous year with the giant pumpkin growing- another sterile plant. I've spent quite a bit of time talking to the "experts" and am on the hunt for a good "proven" seed for next year. For now, I've grown several smaller pumpkins that will be great for decorating.
