Our Parish Centennial Corner: Who Was the Pope in 1916 When St. Martin Started?

Pope Benedict XV (né Giacomo Paolo Giovanni Battista Della Chiesa) was the Successor of St. Peter from September 3, 1914 to January 22, 1922. His pontificate was overshadowed by World War I (then known as the Great War) which had just started in July. The war, labeled by him as “the suicide of civilized Europe,” was his main focus. He declared the neutrality of the Holy See and made several attempts to mediate peace but both sides rejected his initiatives. He also led efforts to alleviate the humanitarian impacts of the war (needs of prisoners of war, wounded soldiers, food supplies, etc.). After the war, the Holy Father revived Catholic missions damaged by it throughout the world and showed great concern about the persecution of the Catholic Church in communist Russia. In 1917 Pope Benedict XV promulgated the Code of Canon Law, which re-energized religious activities in the entire Church. With his leadership and openness, he earned respect for himself and the papacy.

40 Hours Prayer for Vocations for San Jose Pope Francis has asked us to pray for Vocations on Sunday, April 17. The Vocations Office for the Dio-cese of San Jose will be hosting the Annual 40-hour Vocations Prayer asking our Lord to call more of our young people to service as priests, deacons and religious. The 40 Hours will take place at the Carmelite Mon-astery in Santa Clara. It will begin Friday, April 15 at 5PM with an Opening Mass and Eucharistic Pro-cession for children. The monastery chapel will be open all night and all day for prayer. The Closing Mass with Bishop Patrick J. McGrath will be on Sunday, April 17th at 10:30 am. Children who already received their First Communion this year are invited to participate at Friday's Mass and Eucharistic Procession in First Communion attire (see website for more information). Our own Parish Council of the Knights of Columbus will be hosting a hospitality event on Sunday, April 17, after both the 8 a.m. and the 10 a.m. Masses. Fresh coffee and Psycho Donuts will be available in the Hospitality Area on the side of the Church – it’s covered, so even if it’s raining, you can grab a hot cup of coffee and a Psycho Donut. The Council is growing – if you are a Knight and haven’t been involved lately, go see them. If you aren’t a Knight or don’t know what the Knights are, here’s your chance to meet them. If you don’t know what a Psycho Donut is, here is your chance to try one.

REDIMIDOS ¿Recuerdas a Pedro la noche que ar-restaron a Jesús? Insistía en que nunca había oído de Jesús. Hoy estamos llamados a unirnos a Pedro en dar testi-monio del nombre de Jesús como lo hace en la primera lectura, y a proclamar nuestro amor a él tal como lo hace Pedro en el pasaje del Evangelio. La poderosa imagen de la visión de san Juan en la segunda lectura del libro del Apocalipsis nos enseña la comunidad a la que per-tenecemos cuando tenemos fe en el nombre de Jesús. Nos unimos a todos los seres vivientes "miles y millones" en "el cielo, sobre la tierra, debajo de ella y en el mar, y todo lo que hay en el-los" (Apocalipsis 5:11, 13). La majestad y dignidad expresadas en cada lectura están en profundo contraste con la oscura y miserable imagen de Pedro y los otros apóstoles en los momentos en que Jesús era arrestado, juzgado y cruci-ficado. ¡Qué alivio que todos podemos ser tan totalmente redimidos! 40 Horas de Oración por las Vocaciones de San José Papa Francisco nos ha pedido a orar por las vocaciones, el domingo, 17 de abril. La Oficina de Vocaciones de la Diócesis de San José organiza 40 horas de oración por las Voca-ciones pidiendo al Señor que llame a más de nuestros jóvenes al servicio como sacerdotes, diáconos y religio-sos. Las 40 horas estarán en el Monasterio de las Carmelitas de Santa Clara. Se comenzará el viernes 15 de abril a las 5 pm con una Misa y Procesión Eucarística para los niños. La capilla del monas-terio estará abierto toda la noche y todo el día para la oración. La misa de clausura con el Obispo Patrick J. McGrath será el domingo 17 de abril a las 10:30 am. Los niños que reci-bieron la Primera Comunión este año están invitados a participar en la Misa y Procesión Eucarística con sus traje/vestido de primera comu-nión (visita el website para obtener más información). “Lòng thương xót của Chúa tồn tại muôn đời”

“Tin Mừng về lòng thương xót luôn là một cuốn sách mở”, Đức Thánh Cha Phanxicô đã nhắc nhở như trên trong Thánh lễ kính Lòng Chúa thương xót vào Chúa nhật 03-04 tại Quảng trường Thánh Phêrô. Ngài mời gọi mỗi người chúng ta hãy “trở thành những người viết Phúc Âm một cách sinh động, trở thành những người đưa Tin Mừng”. Một lời kêu gọi bước theo chân Đức Kitô, làm chứng bằng “những cử chỉ cụ thể của tình yêu, vốn là chứng tá tốt nhất của lòng thương xót”. Trong bài giảng Chúa nhật kính lòng Chúa thương xót vừa qua, Đức giáo hoàng Phanxicô đã cổ vũ mọi người thực thi“điều Chúa Giêsu đã làm trong ngày phục sinh, khi Người đổ vào lòng trí các môn đệ đang trong cơn hoảng sợ, lòng thương xót của Chúa Cha, Chúa Thánh Linh Đấng tha thứ tội lỗi và đem lại niềm vui”. Điều này đòi hỏi phải có một“tấm lòng kiên nhẫn và mở rộng”, phải là những “kẻ phục vụ quảng đại và vui vẻ, yêu thương một cách vô vị lợi, không đòi hỏi phải được đền đáp”. Và đôi khi phải đương đầu với “cuộc đấu tranh nội tâm giữa việc đóng kín cửa lòng và tiếng gọi mở cửa của tình yêu”. “Đức Kitô, Đấng vì yêu thương, đã bước qua các cửa đóng kín của tội lỗi, của sự chết và hỏa ngục (…), đã chỉ cho chúng ta một con đường một chiều, dẫn chúng ta đi theo một chiều duy nhất: ra khỏi chính mình, để làm chứng cho sức mạnh chữa lành của tình yêu thương đã chinh phục chúng ta”. Trước “một nhân loại thường bị tổn thương và sợ sệt, mang những vết sẹo của những đớn đau và của tâm trạng bất ổn”, Đức Thánh Cha chỉ ra rằng “mỗi thương tật đều có thể tìm thấy nơi lòng thương xót của Chúa một sự trợ giúp hữu hiệu”. Thiên Chúa “muốn đến với mọi nỗi nghèo khổ và giải thoát khỏi tình trạng nô lệ dưới vô vàn hình thức đang đè nặng trên thế giới chúng ta”. Ngài “muốn đến với những vết thương của từng người để chữa trị”. Đức Thánh Cha nhấn mạnh : “Là tông đồ của lòng thương xót có nghĩa là đụng đến và xoa dịu những vết thương của Người, ngày nay còn tồn tại nơi thân xác và trong tâm hồn của bao anh chị em của Người. Có biết bao con người đang cầu xin để được lắng nghe và thấu hiểu, khao khát được ở trong sự bình an của Đức Kitô”. Đức Thánh Cha giải thích: “Đây không phải là một thứ bình an hay hoà bình do thương lượng, không phải sự chấm dứt của một cái gì đó không ổn: mà là sự bình an của Người, sự bình an đến từ lòng của Đấng Phục sinh. Đó là sự hoà bình không chia cắt, mà kết hợp; đó là hoà bình không để người ta cô độc, nhưng làm người ta cảm nhận thấy mình được tiếp nhận và được yêu thương”. Đức Thánh Cha muốn gửi đến các tín hữu một thông điệp về lòng cậy trông khi nhắc nhở rằng “Lòng thương xót của Chúa tồn tại muôn đời, không hề dứt, không suy giảm, không đầu hàng trước những cánh cửa đóng kín và chẳng biết mệt mỏi. REDEMPTION Do you remember Peter on the night Jesus was arrested? He claimed he had never heard of Jesus. Today we are called to join Peter in testifying to the name of Jesus as he does in the first reading, and in proclaiming our love for him as Peter does in the Gospel passage. The powerful imagery of John's vision in the second reading from the book of Revelation shows us the company we keep when we have faith in the name of Jesus. We join all living creatures, "countless in number" from "heaven, earth, under the earth, in the sea; every-thing in the universe" (Revelation 5:11, 13). The dignity and majesty described in each reading are in stark contrast to the dark and pitiful image of Peter and the other apostles at the time of Jesus' arrest, trial, and crucifixion. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION From the earliest centuries, we know that some Christian women desired to vow themselves to a celibate life to pray and serve. Some, but by no means eve-ryone, wanted a kind of monastic life. Others wanted to stay in the family home. By the fourth century, the church was celebrating the "Consecration of Virgins," a rite performed by the bishop, and involving a "veiling" of the woman. It was looked upon as a form of mar-riage with Christ, partly because in the culture of the day a woman's status in society was linked to a man. The prayers and ritual for the consecration of virgins were exactly the same as the prayers and ritual for the consecration of a bride on her wedding day. The public character of the rite gave the bishop the opportunity to commend the virgin to the faithful, and to threaten with punishment anyone who tried to turn her from her commit-ment. Eventually, the rite fell into disuse for women living in the world, and was reserved for nuns. The Second Vatican Council directed that it be revived and restored, and in nearly every diocese, single women have embraced this form of consecrated life. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Las estampitas llevan imágenes de Jesu-cristo, la Virgen, los ángeles o los santos y son muy populares entre los latinos. Las ponemos en nuestros autos, en libros como la Biblia o libros de oración. Las tenemos en altarcitos domésticos o meti-dos en los marcos de las fotos de nuestros seres queridos. Muchos critican esta práctica recordando que en Éxodo 20:3-5, Dios prohibió el uso de ídolos. Esto la Iglesia católica nunca lo ha negado, pero recuerda que Dios también pidió imágenes de ángeles para la arca de la alianza (Éxodo 25: 17). Setting the Record Straight On March 10, the San Jose Mercury News printed an editorial that was critical of future development of land in the southeast quadrant of Morgan Hill. The Diocese of San Jose owns 40 acres that has been purchased for the future Saint John XXIII College Pre-paratory High School. In stating its editorial opinion, the Mercury erroneously reported that the Diocese had previously purchased and sold another piece of land in Morgan Hill, implying that the Diocese would likely do the same with the 40 acres. In fact, the Diocese never owned that land, only the 40 acres in the southeast. On March 11, the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) voted to deny appli-cations for development on # of acres, in-cluding the site of Saint John XXIII. In doing so, LAFCO effectively shut the door for this and any other development in the near future. Although the Mercury printed a “correction” the following day, most readers were not aware of the error or that the newspaper had not done due diligence in establishing the facts.
