THIS IS MY BELOVED SON

This Sunday’s celebration of the Baptism of the Lord closes the Christmas season. In the scriptures we see one more epiphany, or manifestation, of the Spirit of God in Jesus—but this time it is as an adult, rather than as a child. Jesus’

baptism also serves as the inauguration of his prophetic mission and the messianic age. Today’s reading from Isaiah describes God’s chosen Messiah, upon whom God’s spirit rests. In the Acts of the Apostles Peter says that “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power” (Acts 10:38). Finally, in the proclama-tion from Matthew’s Gospel Jesus’ baptism in water goes almost unnoticed. The crucial moment comes when the Spirit of God comes upon Jesus and a voice from heaven echoes the words of Isaiah: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! The LORD shines upon

you and the glory of the Lord appears over you (Isaiah 60:1-6).

Second Reading The mystery has been made known that the Gentiles are coheirs, copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through

the gospel (Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6). Gospel

Magi from the east arrived, saying, “Where is the new-born king of the Jews?” (Matthew 2:1-12).

CHRIST’S MISSION IS OUR MISSION

As Jesus came out of the baptismal waters, the Holy Spirit descended upon him and a voice from

the heavens was heard saying, “This is my beloved son, with whom I am well please.”

In joining himself to humanity, Jesus opened the heavens for us, and in doing so, was confirmed in his mission of mercy and love. In baptism, we are joined with Christ. Immersed into his life and love, his mission is our mission. It is still early in this new year. Today, reflect on your baptismal

call to live as a member of Christ’s body. I. In what ways do you love god and others?

II. In what ways might you grow as a disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ?

III. How are you living the mission of Christ, to make god’s love and mercy know in the

world? IV. Is Christ’s mission your mission?

xương bằng thịt, còn chúng ta, Chúa Ki-tô là tình Yêu của mọi người chúng ta trong đức tin. Như thế, điều xẩy ra cho Mẹ Maria thì hằng ngày cũng xẩy ra nơi mỗi người chúng ta, trong việc nghe Lời Chúa và trong việc cử hành các bí tích. Ngày đầu năm – ngày sum họp gia đình – trong bầu khí nồng ấm của mùa Xuân, hãy “hướng về Đức Trinh Nữ Maria, người mà – như Công Đồng Va-ti-ca-nô II nhắc nhở chúng ta – là “mẫu mực của Giáo hội trong giới luật của đức tin, lòng nhân hậu, và hiệp nhất hoàn hảo với Đức Ki-tô” (Hc “Lumen Gentium”, số 63). Đó chính “Là người con gái của Israel, Đức Maria đã trả lời bang đức tin trước tiếng gọi của Thiên Chúa và trở thành Mẹ

của Con Một Người. Mẹ dạy chúng ta sống một đời sống đức tin bằng sự vâng phục của Mẹ trước ý định của Thiên Chúa và sự tận tâm trung kiên của mình với Chúa Giê-su và công việc của Người. Hướng về Đức Trinh Nữ Maria trong tâm tình sống 4 ý niệm cao trọng: Lễ Cắt Bì và Lễ Đặt Tên Con Thiên Chúa làm người + Lễ Mẹ Thiên Chúa + Ngày Thế giới

Chính Mẹ là Đấng Mẫu Nghi Thiên Hạ có một không hai (độc nhất vô song). Mẹ đã trao ban cuộc đời của mẹ và dấn thân bằng hai chữ “xin vâng” Cho Hài Nhi Giêsu con yêu của mẹ. Ôi! “Lạy Chúa, chúng con cảm tạ Chúa vì Chúa đã ban cho chúng con một người Mẹ tuyệt hảo về mọi phương diện. Nhờ lời chuyển cầu của Mẹ Maria, xin Chúa nhận lời chúng con nài van, mà ban cho chúng con luôn biết sống đẹp lòng Chúa, hòa thuận thương yêu nhau, như Chúa đã yêu thương chúng con. Xin kính chúc toàn thể cộng đoàn dân chúa một mùa xuân thánh Đức, an bình, và một năm mới vạn sự như ý.

Đức Mẹ là Mẹ Thiên Chúa Đức Mẹ được hồng ân thụ thai và sinh hạ Con-Thiên Chúa-làm-người đã được tiền định từ trước. Vậy thì còn tước hiệu nào xứng hợp hơn để nói về Ðức Maria trong lịch sử Cứu Độ bằng tước hiệu Mẹ Thiên Chúa? Từ xác tín Đức Mẹ đã thụ thai và hạ sinh Đức Giê-su Thiên Chúa. Vì Đức Maria hoàn toàn thấm nhuần Lời Chúa, nên Người có khả năng trở thành Mẹ của Lời Nhập Thể. Khi chiêm ngưỡng nơi Mẹ Thiên Chúa một cuộc đời hoàn Toàn phó thác và xin vâng nhờ đó chúng ta được mời gọi bước vào mầu nhiệm đức tin, và cũng nhờ đó, Chúa Ki-tô tới cư ngụ trong đời ta. ESTE ES MI HIJO MUY AMADO Con la celebración del Bautismo del Señor este domingo concluye el tiempo de Navidad. En las lecturas vemos más de una epifanía o manifestación del Espíritu de Dios en Jesús, sólo que esta vez ya no como niño, sino como adulto. El Bautismo de Jesús es también la inauguración de su misión profética y de la era mesiánica. En la lectura de hoy Isaías describe al Mesías elegido por Dios sobre el cual ha puesto su Espíritu. En los Hechos de los Apóstoles Pedro dice que “Dios ungió con el poder del Espíritu Santo a Jesús de Nazaret” (Hechos 10:38). Finalmente, en las proclamación del Evangelio de Mateo el Bautismo de Jesús en el agua casi pasa desapercibido. El momento crucial ocurre cuando el Espíritu de Dios desciende sobre Jesús y una voz del cielo viene como un eco de las palabras de Isaías: “Éste es mi Hijo muy amado, en quien tengo mis complacencias” (Mateo 3:17). New Year, New Clean Floor! - Maintenance Department has started cleaning the floors in the Parish Hall. We ask all groups and parishioners using the

hall to help maintain the cleanliness of the parish hall and kitchen! Dragging chairs and tables create deep scratches on the floor which then hold all

the dirt and moisture. Maintaining the hall clean means less expenses and more savings for the church. Thank you for all your cooperation!
