Wired & WLAN
The next question what arises is what is WLAN?
WLAN is acronym for Wireless Local Area Network
It is nothing but a simple LAN that integrates with
• Computers
• Laptops
• PDAs
•Devices like barcodes , iphones etc
WITHOUT WIRES
How does wireless LAN work? Wireless access point is wired to server
Pocket PC talks to the Access point directly through wireless card
What is MAC Address?
It is a 12 digit hexadecimal address.
It looks like 00:A0:C9:14:C8:29
It is assigned to every device connected to Ethernet.
An address used to represent hardware devices on an network
What is an IP address? An IP(Internet Protocol) address is the numerical
identification that is assigned to the devices participating in the computer network
A unique number consisting of 4 parts separated by dots.For e.g. 192.168.0.0
The format of an IP address is a 32-bit numeric address
written as four numbers separated by periods. Each number can vary from zero to 255.
Every computer connected to the Internet is assigned a unique IP address.
Difference between MAC address and IP address
MAC Address IP Address
It’s a 48 bit hexadecimal number separated by colon
It’s a 32 bit numeric number separated by dots or period
It contains both alphanumeric e.g 00:A0:C9:14:C8:29
It contains only numbers e.g 192.168.1.1
Its like serial no’s for network devices like Vehicle Identification number
It’s the location of a given computer on an IP network like phone numbers
When packets is sent on a single network, only MAC address is required
When packets have to be sent to different networks, we need an IP address
Classes of IP address
There are 5 classes namely : Class A Class B Class C Class D Class E
IP address is divided into two parts :
Network address Host address
What is subnet mask?
subnet mask allows you to identify which part of an IP address is reserved for the network, and which part is available for host use
It indicates whether the two nodes are on the same network
e.g. If you have a network address 192.168.0.0/16 , then a node at 192.168.100.1 is on the same network
Classification of network ID and host ID
Class IP Address Network ID Host ID
A a.b.c.d a b.c.d
B a.b.c.d a.b c.d
C a.b.c.d a.b.c d
Types of IP Address
Each computer in a network has its own internal IP address.
That IP address may be static, which means that it never changes.
Or, as is likely if you share an Internet connection with other computers, the internal IP address may be assigned dynamically and may change from time to time
How to check current IP address?
Look for these entries near the end of the list: - DHCP Enabled. No means your IP address is static. Yes means it is dynamic.- IP Address. This is your current IP address
Assigning the IP address for Windows OS
Click start->settings->control panel->double click on network connections
Right click on Local Area connection & choose properties
In the dialog box of Local area connection properties select Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) and then click properties
In the dialog box of Internet protocol(TCP/IP) click on both obtain an IP address automatically and obtain DNS server address automatically. Then click OK
Assigning IP Address to MAC OS
In system preferences click on network
In network click on Airport
Click on TCP/IP
Classification of IP address
The current Internet uses IP address in the form xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx , a sample might be 202.187.1.4
Due to these kind of allocation, there started shortage of available IP addresses
To conserve IP address space, networks which are not directly connected to the Internet are often given private address
Meaning of Public IP
Public IP address are assigned by Internet Service Provider
Public IP addresses are reserved for Internet
These are routable IP Address
There is no network security
Meaning of Private IP
These are system generated IP address
Private IP addresses are reserved for private networks including home, office, airports, hotels etc
Computers within a private network are assigned a unique IP address in order to exchange files & share information with one another
Private IP Address range
From 10.0.0.0 to10.255.255.255 From 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255 From 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255
These address are usually non routable IP address
What is NAT It means Network address translation
It is a technique for preserving scarce IP address
It distinguishes Public IP address from Private IP
address
It is a technique to conserve IP address space
How does NAT function?
NAT translates single public IP address to number of private IP addresses
Below is observation when a client access a website(WWW) using NAT
192.168.1.1
The client sends a packet to the access point
The access point transfers the packet on to the web server
WebServer
192.168.1.1 204.64.201.18
It changes packet’s source IP address to Public IP and stores it in a table
The web server response
WebServer
192.168.1.1 204.64.201.18
204.64.201.18
It sends the requested information to the public IP address 204.64.201.18
The access point forwards the network traffic to the client
NAT hides private IP address but selectively transfer messages to these devices , providing a security to LAN
WebServer
192.168.1.1 204.64.201.18
204.64.201.18192.168.1.1
It changes the destination IP address of the packets back to the private IP 192.168.1.1
What is DHCP?
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a network protocol that enables a server to automatically assign an IP Address to a computer from a defined range of numbers
DHCP assigns an IP address when a system is booted for example
When a user boots a computer with DHCP client
For example
When you are offered a job,you will be given a designation & duties & responsibility once you join
The same way the DHCP server assigns IP address to the system dynamically once you start the computer with DHCP client
DHCP server
Dynamically assigns
IP address
How DHCP function?
In hotels, DHCP clients are guests
LAN is the wireless network.
Communication between DHCP client & DHCP server
DNS It means Domain Name System/Service/Server, an
Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses.
As domain names are alphabetic in order, they're
easier to remember.
DNS Server www.yahoo.com
Translates www.yahoo.com to
IP Address 69.147.76.15
SNMP
It means Simple Network Management Protocol
It is a way to talk to your network equipments & know all kinds of information from them without having to connect each device to a laptop/iphones etc
This is mainly used in troubleshooting the network
SNMP Manager
ServerClient computer
Router
Switch

What is wi-fi technology?
A wireless network uses radio signals, just like cell phones ,televisions and radios use for transmission
Speed of Wi-fi standardsThe throughput is measured in Mega bits per second(Mbps)
The frequency is measured in Ghz(Giga hertz)
IEEE Standards Speed Frequency
802.11b 11 Mbps 2.4 Ghz
802.11g 54 Mbps 2.4 Ghz
802.11a 54 Mbps 5.0 Ghz
802.11n 200 plus Mbps
2.4 & 5 Ghz
What is SSID?Service Set Identifier
An SSID is also referred to as a network name because it is a name that identifies a wireless network
SSID is a configurable identification that allows clients to communicate to the nearest access point
With proper configuration, only clients that are configured with the same SSID can communicate with access point having the same SSID.
SSID from a security point of view acts as a single shared password between access point and user
Role of an ISP
It means Internet Service Provider,a company that provide access to Internet
For a fixed usage, the service provider allocates you a package with username, password & an ISP access phone number in case of downtime
Equipped with a network equipment, you can then log on to required website
Installing devices that don’t need a driver.
E g ECS, ORINICO
For this you just need to insert the kit at their location and wait for the device to get install and then you need to connect it to the wireless signal
NOMADIX server
NOMADIX is based on providing solutions for public access to create multiuse for end user access.
Nomadix develops its Nomadix Service Engine (NSE) software and Access Gateways that enable network providers to create intelligent Public access networks, which provide transparent, secure, high-

PART 3
Billing
Billing is made for the Internet usage by the esteemed guests
Guests are of two kinds :
Who stays in hotel
Walk-in guests (who have come for conference etc)
Charges for internet access can be posted to the guest Fidelio through PMS interface at the time of check out
Charges of walk-in guests is done at the front office
Billing screens
The guest is exposed to various kinds of screens, listed below
Technology Portal or Login ScreenPurchase ScreenRenew Screen
Login page
Billing modules
There are three kinds of billing modules
Package selection online
Coupon system
Business centre billing
Depending on the type of billing module, the revenue
generation must be carried out daily and this report should be
certified by the IT head or IT department
Room Billing procedure
Step1:
Guests selects the internet package online and the usage amount will be stored in the web server and hotel PMS(Property management Server)
Step 1 is common process for all guests who selects online package
Step 2:
CE should keep track on the Internet usage daily
The same should be mailed to concerned person of hotel and Convergent technical team
Step 3:
If the guest makes any wrong selection for example instead of selecting 2hrs he may select 24hrs
In such a case the guest will inform the CE about the wrong
posting
The CE must make a note of this
The front office cashier will inform CE about the allowances made in the Internet bill against the room number
Step 4:
The CE should make a note of the step 3 details in the daily report.
This will be helpful to calculate the total amount collected at the month end after the allowance.
At the end of the month the reports of the same must be Emailed to the concerned person
Step 5: Suppose if the guests selects the package for 2hrs and if he
faces any problem in the Internet then he will ask the front office staff to give the allowance
In such case, the CE will be asked to check if there was really any problem in the Internet
CE will check with his laptop, if there are any problems he will inform the same to front office Executive
Revenue generation for room billing
The revenue generation of the respective guests will be done based on the reports sent by CE
The CE should make sure that the posting of amount is happening properly so that the revenue loss will not occur to hotel & convergent
If you notice any issue in amount posting then inform to convergent technical team
Revenue generation for room billing
If the guest is unable to select online package due to laptop issue, he will inform front office manager
CE takes MAC address and the time he needs to
browse of the guest and adds it to NOMADIX so that the Internet will be made available for the mentioned package
In such a scenario, the amount will be posted manually by PMS
Revenue generation for room billing
CE should make a note of this in daily report
The taxes are extra for Internet usage
The Internet amount collected by the hotel will be shared among the hotel and Convergent based on revenue sharing module
(for example convergent%-hotel%)
Revenue report
Click on report
Wi-fi Coupon system
The Wi-fi coupons are used by certain guests for accessing Internet
The coupons are generated at office
The guest will request for coupons at the front office
CE should make sure he has sufficient coupons
Wi-fi Coupon system
CE should inform convergent technical staff well in advance if there is insufficient coupons
There will be two copies , one office copy & the other guest copy. Enter the details & handover guest copy & retain the office copy and file it
Business centre billing
There are business centre at hotels installed with desktops to provide Internet for in house and walking guests
Here the in-house guests browse Internet and the
amount will be posted to his room bill
In case of walk-in guest, the Internet amount to be paid to the front office after browsing
Business centre billing
At the end of the day, the hotel business centre executive will post all business centre revenue to the respective room numbers
This information to be collected from business center staff
CE must keep track of all these information and
must enter in the daily report
PART 4
Differences between bandwidth & network speed
Bandwidth indicates how much data can flow through cables
It is usually represented in bps(bits per second)
Network speed indicates us the rate at which the data can flow on the cable
It is usually represented in Bps(bytes per second)
Troubleshooting
1. Login page fails to come up automatically
The ip address is of our range
Whether you can ping the web server address
Whether the home page set is Internet or an intranet page
Whether the flash object adds on is preventing the page to come up
Any firewall which is preventing the login page to come up
Any proxy or configuration script set
VPN not connecting:
A very common problem at sites. Look for the following points: Whether authentication is complete and guest has a valid
account Whether you can ping the IP of the VPN server Go to control panel….go to network Connection…Here you can find a icon of the VPN adapter i.e.
cisco vpn adapter …is it enabled? Is the guest entering the password correctly? Provide a public ip – is he able to connect now?
Internet page cannot be displayed
The most important and most often encountered problem. Start with Is the guest connected to the wireless network? Has he received the IP address information? Has he successfully gone through the login screen? Are you able to ping the site he is trying to open? Is his VPN connected? (Some VPN stop the browsing when they are
active.) Try disconnecting the VPN and check if you can browse the sites.
Is it a intranet page or an internet page? Are you able to ping Nomadix?
Outgoing mails not working
If the guest account is valid?
If the address he is sending the mails returns the mails unexpectedly
Try providing our SMTP address
Testing and monitoring steps
1. Wi-fi Signal testing must be done regularly
2. Monitoring the Bandwidth utilization
3. Rating the ISP quality by noting the downtime of the service
4. Stock Spare equipments at each site to reduce the downtime of the link
Testing and monitoring steps
5. Monitor ODUs, network view and login details of guests
6. Check whether VPN application is working when guest logs into his corporate ID
7. Both the ISPs has to be checked
8. Preventive Maintenance of Wi-fi infrastructure
Wi-fi signal testing
Enable Wi-fi on your laptop
Right click on Intel PROSet/Wireless and click on open Intel/Wireless
Select SSID, for e.g. CCILP
Then Click on Connect
Now its connected to CCIPL network
Now here we can see the Network name,Speed,,Signal quality and IP address
Then click on details for additional information on Wi-fi Access point like Channel,Band,Mac ID of the Access point etc.
Click on advanced tab & select advanced statistics to check signal strength
Network view
Initial troubleshooting steps
Before checking any guest laptops , take your laptop & make sure that the signal strength is excellent the Guest room
If everything is working fine with your laptop then request the guest as sir/Madam can I have the permission to check your laptop as I am able to access Internet from my laptop. If the guest permits, then perform the following
Check whether wi-fi is enabled in laptop
Check for the IP address, that is from your DHCP server
Ensure that the correct SSID is selected during wi-fi network configuration.
Make sure that the firewall and proxy settings are disabled.
Request the guest to re-login
After login if he gets any error message like “ Unable to add to nomadix ”,then you should clear the expired list in nomadix to fix the issue
If the error message related to ports like “Error sending data over port”, then we should restart both Internal Web Server (IWS) and Interface Systems to give internet connection
If the guest does not permit to give his / her laptop then immediately inform to front office management
Basic trouble shooting for Wi-fi networks
Step 1:On your internet explorer browser Click on
TOOLS

In the LAN setting make sure that the box for the proxy settings in unchecked.
Step 2:
If u are still getting the error “Page cannot be displayed”
Click on START---RUN, and in the run window, type CMD
Type ipconfig
Step 3:
If you are unable to ping to the server then verify the IP address setting of your adaptor by right click
My Network places
Properties
Select your wireless network icon then right click the icon
Properties
In propertiesSelect Internet protocol TCP A window will open up in this window select
Obtain an IP address automatically and select Obtain a DNS server automatically
Once this is done you should get the login screen for internet access.
In case if you are still unable to get IP address automatically then you can assign an IP address manually Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and default gateway
Use the preferred DNS,you can leave the alternate DNS blank
If all of these trouble shooting steps fail then
Right click your wireless Icon in the system tray and then click
view available wireless networks check for the available networks select your network and then click
connect
Step 4:
If all the trouble shooting steps fail then go to Start
Run
services.msc after you type this a window will open up
Double click the DHCP Client service then click on Stop and then click on Start Do the same thing for the DNS Client service and Wireless zero configuration
Step 5:
Step 6 :
Finally after all this trouble shooting if you still cannot get to the internet page, make sure you verify if any firewall is ON in the computer
If any firewall is On then please ask the guest to disable the firewall
Trouble shooting Wi-fi LANWi-fi can go wrong due to the following reasons-
Weak signals in the proposed area
Low data rate
Low download speed or slow browsing
Delay in ping response / packet drops
Equipments going faulty due to power interruptions or malfunctioning of the equipments
Physical damage of the equipments and cables
Connections for the equipments are not proper
1. Low signals in proposed areaTo make sure this problem doesn’t occur, you must check whether AP is working properly. And make sure there are no obstructions for the signal to pass
2. Low data rate in Wi-fiOnce the signals are proper and the access points are placed properly, then the date rate in Wi-fi will be good (11Mbps). If the problem of data rate still persists then check the AP (access point).Check whether the antenna is proper and the Ethernet port is pinging
3. Less download speeds/slow browsingAs long as the data rate is good, the download speed and thebrowsing will be good. If the download speed or browsing goes down even when the data rate is optimal then contact ISP(Internet Service Provider) and convergent technical team
4. Delay in ping responses /Packet dropsPing responses depend on signals and data rate. As long as the signal and data rate are proper the ping made to ISP or AP will result in quick reply. If there in any delay then check for the data rate. The data rate must be 11Mbps for 802.11b
5. Customer laptop/palmtop etc going faultyEnsure customer laptop is working fine when he/she complains the Internet is not working fine
6. Physical damage of the equipments or cablesTo avoid this problem care should be taken while placing the equipments; it should be placed in a proper place
7. Connections for the equipment are not intact. To avoid this problem, all the connections to the equipments should be checked whether they are intact before use
Trouble shooting steps for IP Tran
IP Tran problems are usually related to either incorrect Data Tran setup, LAN set up or firewall issues
1. Verify that both the RED and GREEN LEDs on the front edge of the IP Tran are glowing. The IP Tran will not operate unless both of these LEDs are glowing
2. If the RED LED is not glowing, then there is a cable or electrical problem with the Ethernet connection.Verify cable integrity and connections to other LAN components such as router, switches and modem
3. If the GREEN LED is not glowing, then the IP Tran was unable to get an IP address from a DHCP server
Verify that there is a working DHCP server on the LAN which can issue a non conflicting IP address, DNS address(es) and gateway address to the IP Tran
4. If both LEDs are glowing and the Data Tran is properly loaded and configured, then there may a firewall or router configuration which is preventing the IP Tran from reaching the processing host
Internet bandwidth testing procedure
Bandwidth availability (assume that the available bandwidth is 2Mb) Normal download speed for 2Mb will be 200 to 210KB/sec Ping response to the ISP default gateway(192.168.1.1) should be less
than 10ms Ping response to yahoo website www.yahoo.com must be 190ms to
200 ms Trace route to yahoo website www.yahoo.com must be within 10 to
13 hops All the websites should be able to browse properly VPN application must be working
If the normal download speed for 2Mb is less than 200 to 210KB/sec, before logging the complaint to ISP below checking must be performed
1. Ping to your default ISP gateway (192.168.1.1) and check for the response time and packet drops
2. Ping to yahoo website www.yahoo.com, Google www.Google.com, toi www.toi.com and check for the response time
3. Perform Trace route to the yahoo , Google and times of India website and check for the number of hops
Maintenance
LAN Cables and RJ 45 connectors (connected to the AP) should be checked for any physical damages
Make sure the AP is Running with proper channel and Standard (802.11b)
Make sure that Pig tail, amplifier,RF cables etc are working fine
Make sure that the antenna is aligned properly for the excellent signal strength
Duties and Responsibilities 1.Attending to Internet requirements of the Hotel Guests

1) Crimping a cable
Aim:Crimp an RJ-45 cable.
Things required:- A reasonable length cable
- Either ends of RJ-45 cable
- Crimping tool
How to proceed?
Strip the cable to 2cm at each end and separate the strands.
They are usually divided into twisted pairs of colors
-Orange/Orange-white
-Green/Green-white
-Blue/White and blue
-Brown/brown-white
Crimping code To obtain a straight cable, the ends must be crimped typically the same
way at each end
In general, the code is
1) orange-white
2) orange
3) green-white
4) Blue
5) blue-white
6) Green
7) brown-white
8) brown
An image to better understand the coding
How to crimp a cable?
Take one end of RJ-45 end and carefully place each colored wire into the appropriate slot
Now here’s where you need a little strength! Take the Crimping tool and place in the new wired RJ-45 end
Be very careful
Ensure you are careful, not to pull out any of the wires from the RJ-45 end while you are placing it in the crimping tool
It is best if, while crimping, you keep the ends of each wire pushed in as far as possible to ensure the leads make full contact with the RJ-45 connector
With the RJ-45 End (with wires inserted) in the crimper, use your crimper to clamp the 8 tiny metal contacts of the RJ-45 end into each RJ-45 cable
Once you’re successfully crimped your first end, crimp the other end
This is where you can make or damage the cable!
Make sure you insert colored wires in the proper order
Now check, and re check, that you’ve inserted the colored wires in the proper order.
Once you’re sure you have, crimp that end also
Once an RJ-45 end is crimped, you cannot reuse it
