Archival History An inscription inside the front cover states that the album was 'bought at auction at Patrick Simpsons for 18/-', on 18 June 1901. It was deposited in CCCA in 1971 (accession reference: 26/71). The collection was initially listed onto an Access database. This descriptive list was prepared in December 2011.

Administrative / Biographical History The Aldworth family originated in Berkshire, England, from whence Richard Alworth moved to Ireland at the time of Queen Elizabeth's Irish wars. The legal document U2/2 includes a 'Pedigree of the Aldworths since their coming into Ireland'. The first Richard got the estate of Shortcastle, near Mallow, forfeited by the Earl of Desmond. His grandson, Sir Richard (d1629), was appointed Provost Marshall of Munster, and married a daughter of the Earl of Cork. The family was granted lands formerly owned by the MacAuliffe clan, including the Manor of Newmarket, letters patent from Charles I in 1639 renewing the grant. Newmarket House became the family seat, and many family members are buried in Trinity Church, Newmarket. Colonel Richard Aldworth married Elizabeth St Leger, daughter of Lord Doneraile 'by whom the Doneraile Estate and Title came into the family in the person of St Leger Aldworth his second son'. This Elizabeth (d1775) is thought to have been the only woman ever admitted to the Masonic order (U1/1, U/1/69). Her grandson, Richard, took the legal actions (1800 and 1819) documented in U/2. Major Richard Aldworth served on Kanturk Board of Guardians and leased premises to Newmarket Dispensary (see, eg, BG/98/A/101: minutes 1921-23). The Aldworths remained prominent landlords and Establishment figures, serving in local administration and the military, throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. The last member of the family died in 1927. Newmarket House later became a convent for the Sisters of St Joseph, and is presently known as the James O'Keeffe Institute, housing a number of local and community agencies.



Content & Structure

Scope & Content Photographs of members of the Aldworth family and connections, including one of Newmarket House (U1/40). Surnames occurring include Oliver, Ferguson, Maingay, and others. U1/8 is of 'W Benson, HMS Euryalus'. U1/60 shows 'The Comet as seen in Cheltenham at 5:15am 20 Oct 1882'.The photographs are generally 19th century, and on studio cards, from studios in Cork, Dublin, London, Paris, and Geneva, and elsewhere in England, Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, India, and the USA. The photographs have been removed from the album and are kept in archival photo envelopes. The album itself has been retained, and includes captions naming the subjects of many of the photographs (U1/69). Inside the front cover are two newscuttings regarding the admission of Elizabeth Aldworth (nee St Leger) to the Masonic order. U1/1 is a printed card showing Mrs Alworth in masonic garb. There is a descriptive database of the collection, on which this list is based.

Arrangement The order of the items as they were placed in the album has been retained.
