Pace AcademyArthur M. Blank Family Upper School

Situated at the front of campus, the four-story, 76,000-SF Arthur M. Blank Family Upper School completes the Pace campus masterplan, and provides quantitative and qualitative improvements to the Upper School.

The building is sited to ‘fi t’ within its campus context both aesthetically and logistically. Its imagery compliments the architectural style and scale of Pace’s iconic “castle” while providing 40 classrooms, eight science labs, two computer labs, a three-story library, roof terrace, academic resource center, teacher offi ces, college counseling suite, meeting rooms, and two-story student commons. Each space accommodates emerging technologies, and employs energy effi cient building systems. Spaces are fi lled with natural daylight to promote comfortable and healthy learning environments.

Particular design attention was paid to spaces that promote daily encounters between students and teachers, all within a warm and inviting residential aesthetic.

For students and the broader Pace community, a prominent student commons is nestled into the gardens and serves as an informal hangout space and also accommodates formal lectures, performances and a variety of school events.

St. Martin’s Episcopal School

The new middle school building at St. Martin’s Episcopal School in Atlanta provides much needed classrooms, science labs, and multipurpose space in a dedicated 40,800-SF, three-story building. The building is the cornerstone of an expansion program that allows the reconfi guration of existing buildings to optimally serve early childhood and elementary school levels, expand existing dining facilities, and provide a range of upgraded spaces that benefi t the entire school.

The building is designed to make the best use of a small, challenging site in the midst of an established residential neighborhood. A daylight basement level maximizes new program space within its footprint, with a below grade connection that allows new, larger locker rooms to accommodate the existing gymnasium. An appropriately scaled and modulated façade is presented to the adjacent neighbors. Internally, the multipurpose space is expressed as a light-fi lled glass jewel box that creates a signature focal point to the campus. A carefully selected and proportioned material palette of brick, stucco and metal panels ties the design into the existing buildings, while respecting the residential character of the surroundings.

The middle school is LEED Silver certifi ed and incorporates many sustainable features including a green roof that is accessible from the biology lab, high-albedo roof materials, and high-effi ciency plumbing fi xtures.

Atlanta International SchoolAdair Art | Science | Design Center

(STEM)

This new 32,200-SF, three-story science, arts and design facility is designed to promote constructive dialogue between right-brained and left-brained students and teachers.

Both teaching and informal encounter spaces are provided to encourage the interaction and exchange of ideas between the sciences and the arts.

The building accommodates upper school biology, physics, and design tech labs, a greenhouse, science department offi ces, and public gallery/exhibit areas for multi-disciplinary displays and project exhibitions. The project has LEED Silver certifi cation and completed for $8.2 million.

Mount Vernon Presbyterian SchoolUpper School

After completing the master plan with MVPS, Collins Cooper Carusi designed its 73,000-SF upper school and administration building. The facility includes a classroom/administration wing, media center, visual art classrooms and administrative support spaces. The athletic core is organized around an 11,000-SF competition gymnasium.

The design provides building occupants with a connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Access to natural light throughout the building provides demonstrable increases in student productivity and well-being. The abundance of natural light decreased the need for artifi cial light and allows the school to save energy. The project also involved the development of a competition football/soccer venue and a baseball/softball complex.

The site accommodated a geothermal ground loop, located beneath the new sports fi eld, which serves most of the building’s heating/cooling needs. These measures, in conjunction with increased building envelope insulation values, high-effi ciency glazing and lighting, and a software-based building automation system, resulted in a 38.6% energy savings over code-required minimums. The building achieved LEED Silver certifi cation.

Mount Vernon Presbyterian SchoolLower School

At the core of all Mt. Vernon Presbyterian School programs, teachers challenge children to be active and engaged solution-seekers, ethical decision-makers, communicators, creative thinkers, innovators and collaborators. Collins Cooper Carusi Architects worked with MVPS to develop spaces that inspire and foster this engagement for students. To accommodate ongoing lower school activities without interruption, expansion and modifi cations were phased.

Phase I included a playground, kindergarten classrooms and an art room that is shared by all lower school grades. The open plan and fl exible furniture in these spaces allow for individual and group exploring, thinking and learning. Teachers reconfi gure the learning environment to accommodate all types of learners and all types of group activities.

Phase II accommodates spaces for students in grades one through four in what is the newly renovated education building. Students are thriving in their newly designed learning environments. The fl exibility of the spaces and furniture allow everyone to be comfortable, more focused and energized. MVPS is fostering collaboration in common spaces that are designed with postable and writeable surfaces.

Mount Vernon Presbyterian SchoolMaster Plan

To complement a successful K-8 program, Mt. Vernon Presbyterian School chose to expand their off erings to include a new upper school campus. The site, approximately 30 acres and within 150 yards of the existing campus, off ered the space to grow and the opportunity to develop a campus that included all the required academic programs.

Collins Cooper Carusi Architects worked with Mount Vernon to develop a solution that was sensitive to the neighborhood context while refl ecting an understanding of campus architecture through the creation of spaces that encourage a sense of community and social interaction.

Holy Innocents’ Episcopal SchoolRowan Family Middle School

The Fred Rowan Family Middle School provides Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School the classroom space required to accommodate its growing enrollment. Part of the new campus master plan, the three-level 41,000-SF middle school building is strategically placed near the renovated baseball fi elds, outdoor playground and new athletic facility expansion. The building’s interior and architectural elements are designed to refl ect the teens’ infl ux of creative energy, and to keep the building as low maintenance as possible. The art lab, situated on the upper fl oor, is wrapped in clerestory glass and has large, round skylights protruding from the roof deck above. This provides the young artists with plenty of natural light to develop their creations.

The student commons and media center provide areas for students to collaborate in groups via the moveable furnishings, or to get the latest homework assignments online at the computer bar.

The main corridors of the new middle school utilize low maintenance and high durability fi nishes, which will survive years of continual use and abuse from the teenage students.

Holy Innocents’ Episcopal SchoolMath, Science and Commons Building

At 65,000-SF, the Math, Science and Commons building features spacious, well-appointed laboratories for Biology, Environmental Studies, Chemistry and Physics. The HIES Broadcast Media program includes broadcast studio, cinematography and graphics labs. A large robotics lab, with plenty of space for experimentation and robot battles, will be a highlighted space in the new building. Seven new mathematics classrooms compliment the science programs, with faculty commons spaces to connect these varied but aligned disciplines. The building features a large exterior roof terrace, directly accessible from several labs, that will be a place for science and environmental experimentation.

The building will also serve as the primary food service location for the campus. A 520-seat dining hall with full service kitchen and servery occupies the ground fl oor. The dining hall opens onto a new courtyard, allowing students to enjoy meals in an open green space. The servery holds four serving lines, allowing for fl exible menu options while maintaining effi cient serving times. School-wide Administration and Admissions occupy the ground fl oor along with meeting and testing space, which are easily accessible to parents and visitors.

Designed to complement existing campus buildings, the math, science and commons also represents an updated aesthetic direction for new buildings proposed on the master plan. The use of Georgia granite in the facade, combined with traditional hipped metal roofs found across the HIES campus, generates a building that is at once grounded in tradition while looking forward to future horizons.

Holy Innocents’ Episcopal SchoolMaster Plan

In collaboration with HGOR Landscape Architects, Collins Cooper Carusi Architects developed both short and long term master plans to direct the growth of the campus over the next 20 years.

Using knowledge gained from previous projects on campus, interviews with school personnel, as-built surveys of existing buildings and systems and benchmark analyses of comparable facilities, CCCA evaluated each program component and developed a detailed program of space requirements and organizational relationships.

With the building program established, CCCA conducted interactive work sessions to develop a series of master plan diagram options addressing issues of phasing, circulation, open space, property acquisition, and cost.

CCCA successfully shepherded the master plan through a lengthy zoning and land-use approval process with the City of Sandy Springs. CCCA helped the school address neighborhood concerns and guided negotiations with the city over conditions applied to the master plan approval, resulting in a rational and progressive design that satisfi ed all stakeholders.

Mill Springs Academy is currently in the fundraising phase to implement this integral part of its master plan. Through continued planning and collaboration with the school, Collins Cooper Carusi Architects recommended new programs within its Master Plan to include the addition of a new 21,500-SF Lower/Middle School building, Library and Pavilion facility, Performing and Fine Arts building, and Athletic Center facilities. The spaces both engage and encourage new forms of learning and retention, and open, collaborative spaces have been implemented within the building.

Serving as the new fl agship building, the new Upper School Building and dining hall anchors the long-term development of the Mount Pisgah Christian School’s East campus.

The architecture complements the adjacent gymnasium and sanctuary buildings with its brick exterior and cast stone detailing. The main fl oor of Geier Hall is raised above the lawn elevation in order to provide natural light to the lower level dining hall. The dining hall opens onto an outdoor plaza area and green space which off ers views to the creek that runs through the campus.

Recognizing the impact of natural light on mood and student performance, the building’s design incorporates maximum use energy-effi cient windows in instructional areas.

Christ the King School is a 500 student, K-8 independent school run the by Christ the King Cathedral in Midtown/Buckhead Atlanta. One of the city’s oldest catholic communities, the cathedral and school both date back to the 1930’s. This rich history has created a wide ranging, diverse and vibrant community, one which the school was challenged to serve through its campus of loosely connected but tightly packed, aging facilities.

Existing school facilities (four inter-connected buildings of varying ages) were re-programmed in a manner that would require only minor construction renovation, yet would reorganize instructional spaces and circulation in more logical ways and refi nish key elements that would allow the school to evolve curriculum and remain competitive from a recruitment standpoint.

Middle school and some administration program elements were directed to the new building, in which a gymnasium, large performance space and several collaborative learning environments were strategically designed to maximize usability by both the school and church. This new building provides direct street access to a green roof recreation area and direct connections to the interior campus courtyard, both important aspects of making the old and new areas of the site work as a cohesive, well connected campus. Special attention was also paid to creating learning environments that met current instructional needs, maximized daylighting, and provided fl exibility to grow and change with new learning models in the years ahead.

Cliff Valley SchoolExpansion

After refi ning the campus’s existing master plan, Collins Cooper Carusi completed the design of two new buildings for The Cliff Valley School. Housing science, art, tutoring and general classrooms, the 13,550-SF, two-story classroom building is designed to aesthetically compliment an iconic image portrayed by the existing building.

The new 11,725-SF gymnatorium building is sited on the campus to form a courtyard that provides new athletic, music, theatrical and gallery spaces. The centerpiece of this facility is a new rooftop science classroom that connects to and enhances the school’s existing outdoor science program.

This project was designed as the fi rst small commercial building compliant under Southface’s new Earthcraft sustainable design initiative, which is comparable to LEED design principles.

North Atlanta High SchoolAdaptive Reuse

The Atlanta Public Schools’ new 507,000-SF North Atlanta High School is an adaptive reuse design of a 56-acre IBM corporate campus. The new school accommodates 2,350 high school students and includes an 11-story concrete-framed tower that spans over a scenic lake, an assembly building housing performing arts and competition-sized gymnasium, and a 942-car parking deck.

The assembly building constructed adjacent to the tower includes large, high-volume spaces with special acoustics and includes a 600-seat auditorium, a 150-seat black box theater, music rooms and a 2,100-seat competition gymnasium with an additional practice gymnasium. A ‘main street’ design approach was used to connect the two main buildings and parking facility.

To maintain the site’s mature trees and dramatic terrain, the existing on-grade parking lots were converted into athletic venues for football, baseball, softball, tennis and track. This building is pursuing LEED Certifi cation.

E. Rivers Elementary School

Opened in 1917 and originally called Peachtree Heights School, E. Rivers Elementary is one of Atlanta Public Schools’ oldest schools. The school burned down in 1948 and a new school was constructed on the same site. To accommodate rapid enrollment growth, additions and renovations were performed in 1958, 1987, and 1993, and as the school community continued to grow, the overall building became obsolete.

Designed to integrate closely with a small urban site, the newly designed 112,000-SF, three-story school is comprised of three classroom wings with attached administration, cafeteria/auditorium and gymnasium components. The site is 8.67 acres and includes parking and drop-off , a soccer fi eld, track, a certifi ed eco-habitat garden, and playgrounds.

During the planning and programming phase, Collins Cooper Carusi Architects worked closely with Atlanta Public Schools to collaborate with surrounding neighborhoods and school community. Aesthetically, the architecture is intended to relate to the adjacent historic residential community while promoting a walking environment.

Clarke Central High SchoolRenovation and Addition

The historic Clarke Central High School is maintaining its academic and athletic schedule while a multi-phased renovation and addition is underway to create an a campus that off ers 21st century learning environments. Originally Athens Senior High School, the campus was constructed in the late 1940s and had subsequent renovations and additions as changing needs dictated.

Collins Cooper Carusi Architects worked with Clarke County Schools to update the building’s infrastructure and install state-of-the-art classroom technology. Campus additions provide increased classroom sizes and total number of classrooms, a new science wing, new performing art rehearsal space and renovations to Mel Auditorium. A media center is the focal point of the courtyards and classroom wings. The gym is being renovated and new locker room facilities are being added.

An important goal of the renovation is to reconfi gure the campus in such a way that reinforces the community of Clarke Central High School. Our team designed exterior courtyards and a network of bridges that allow students to traverse the commons with ease. The project scope also includes redevelopment of exterior spaces to improve pedestrian and vehicular traffi c patterns and to keep bus and commuter traffi c separate, all while maintaining the campus’s historic front entry lawn.

Decatur High SchoolPerforming Arts & Athletics Center

Just steps from the historic downtown Decatur Square, the new $24 million Performing Arts and Athletics Complex at Decatur High School is designed to complement the existing campus environment while providing a renewed civic presence for the city.

The overall project is comprised of a 1,600 seat competition gymnasium, a 500 seat performing arts auditorium, and the outdoor synthetic turf football stadium with seating for over 3,800 spectators.

The performing arts auditorium incorporates custom sound and theatrical lighting systems and is designed to serve not only the High School, but to augment the arts programs of other schools within the school system as well as the community. Stadium style seating at the rear and sloped fl oor seating at the front of the space are confi gured to provide optimal viewing for the activities on stage.

The space is complemented by a 1,700 SF multi-purpose rehearsal room, lighting catwalks, a sound and light control room, dressing rooms, and a set storage / construction shop each designed to meet the technical needs of contemporary theater and performing arts programs.

The King & Spalding Childcare Center is an adaptive reuse of an existing 4-story, 55,000 SF facility in Midtown Atlanta. The center was developed to provide a quality childcare option for the employees of the law fi rm. This childcare facility accommodates 108 kids, and resides on two fl oors totaling 15,000 SF The facility was designed with features reminiscent of a treehouse. Forms, materials, and graphics were selected because they were environmentally friendly and helped to communicate the safe-harbor and excitement associated with a treehouse.

The remaining 40,000 SF of the building has been programmed to house the Tort and Environmental Litigation departments of King & Spalding. The goals of the renovation were to provide a better working environment compared to the departments’ previous locations by developing better circulation paths to increase work fl ow, and providing state of the art support spaces, conference rooms, and meeting areas. The program also responded to the client’s need for additional senior level offi ce space while keeping the rest of the layout fl exible for future changes and staff additions.

All of the existing building systems were assessed and replaced in their entirety. This facility is designed for State and NAEYC accredited.

Situated on the historic Oglethorpe University campus between the original academic quad and the residential precinct, the new Campus Center encompasses a main dining hall, student organization spaces, meeting rooms, recreational and study spaces, and student services offi ces. With a growing need to serve an expanding on-campus and commuting student population, the Turner Lynch Campus Center serves a vital role as the fulcrum of student life on campus.

Collins Cooper Carusi Architects engaged students, staff , faculty, leadership, and alumni to defi ne the vision for the project through a series of collaborative workshops. Multiple design concepts, which considered both renovation and new construction, were explored and evaluated based on program content and organization, site utilization, phasing and fi nancial viability. Based on these criteria, a new facility was recommended to replace the aged and outdated 1969 student center. The revitalized design embraces the uniqueness of Oglethorpe University’s architecture, student culture and the natural setting of the site, and reinforces its place on campus as the crossroads between the students’ academic and residential lives.

The Turner Lynch Campus Center is the rebirth of a facility that occupies the essential space between academics and student life, both physically and symbolically. It is a space for students to gather - whether to dine, collaborate, play or relax.

The 40-year-old Library and Academic Commons building at Oxford College received a 10,200-SF addition and a complete renovation of the existing 20,000-SF library building. Located on the historic Oxford campus carriage path, the library is now a vibrant center of academic excellence, research, and learning. The project also includes a new building façade, improvements to the existing building envelope and replacement of all mechanical systems.

Collins Cooper Carusi developed a solution that re-introduces the library as a major focus on the campus, while keeping with the historic character of the adjacent building and the campus. This $6.3 million facility is designed to meet a minimum of LEED Silver rating.

The Mount Vernon Presbyterian School fi eld house is a 10,500 SF building that provides the student-athlete with all the amenities to prepare for game day action or for daily training.

Programming elements of this free-standing facility include a training/taping area and a large weight training room overlooking the fi elds. The building’s programming elements include both junior varsity and varsity locker rooms, showers and toilets for the players, and public toilets for the visitors.

The fi eld house also features athletic offi ces, ample equipment storage rooms, and an outdoor terrace for hosting team meetings and booster events.

The Lovett SchoolBaseball Complex

Lovett’s athletics program is an essential facet to the school philosophy, which seeks to develop the whole child. From movement education in the early childhood program through competitive varsity sports, students gain a broad exposure to the importance of physical activity.

Due to their increasing school population, the school needed to expand and improve their athletic facilities to accommodate the growing athletic enrollment. The Baseball & Softball Complex was developed to allow the addition of a new artifi cial sports fi eld for football, lacrosse and physical education.

The programmatic features required to accommodate the competition, training, and spectator needs included a 400 seat grandstand-style softball stadium and a 900 seat grandstand-style baseball stadium clustered together to develop the central pedestrian plaza. The complex also includes a new 8,000 SF Athletic Field House with coaches’ offi ces, umpire locker rooms, team locker areas, indoor batting cages and ample equipment storage areas located on the lower level. The upper plaza level provides easy pedestrian access to both stadiums and features shared concessions areas and public restrooms.

The complex has notable sustainable elements to its design such as a 54,000 gallon cistern that stores collected rain water, which is used for fi eld irrigation.

Mount Pisgah Christian School acquired an 18.6 acre portion of a closed, inactive landfi ll site located approximately one mile from their east campus along Brumbelow Road. Design proceeded immediately and approval was obtained for a master plan concept encompassing a football stadium with a track and bleacher seating for 1,100 people.

Two years later, the school acquired the remainder of the site of about 15 acres. Collins Cooper Carusi Architects was engaged to study the optimal master plan for a full featured athletic complex for this larger site. The goal of this study was to develop a master plan for the athletic complex that could guide the development of the site over time.

MPCS is poised to bring to reality a vision that has been nurtured for the past three years: to create a multi-sport athletic complex that will satisfy the school’s current athletic needs as well as support the school’s sports programs well into the future.

Murray Athletic Center, Railey Fieldand Hite Sports Medicine Center

The Lovett SchoolCollins Cooper Carusi Architects is working with The Lovett School to transform the school’s athletic experience with the addition of three improvements. The new Murray Athletic Center facilitates the expanding athletic programs with 4 new student athlete and faculty locker rooms, containing 240 lockers, a 9,000 SF strength training space and a multipurpose room for a variety of sports, including wrestling.

Adjacent to the Athletic Center is the recently completed Railey Field, a new synthetic turf fi eld that provides venues for football, soccer and lacrosse. Opposite the Athletic Center is the newly renovated 4,000-SF Hite Sports Medicine Center, and between these two buildings lies the Lion Walk, a social gathering space that will be accessible to sporting event attendees. This space will have the capability to be closed off to potential traffi c and will provide a safe, enjoyable atmosphere.

For years, the Danville YMCA coped with an ageing and cramped facility that was increasingly inadequate for their mission of serving the local community. They knew they could boost their membership and off er outreach programs to a wider audience in an expanded and improved home, but the search for a new site proved challenging.

The new building is the fi rst construction on the Dan River in over a century, and will act as an anchor and catalyst for future development. The 50,800 SF project includes a gymnasium, exercise rooms, walking track, six-lane pool and physical therapy center. It off ers senior-friendly features, a teen center and a childcare facility.

Collins Cooper Carusi’s design not only fulfi lls the YMCA’s mission, but it represents the revitalization of the city’s riverfront. The building off ers breathtaking views of the water and city beyond, and physically connects users to the river via a public walking trail. These amenities are unprecedented in the Danville community.

The aesthetic is modern and contemporary but evocative of Danville’s historic character. Using a simple palette of rich materials such as warm wood contrasting against industrial steel, the structure is reminiscent of the textile mills that once stood on the river, and even incorporates salvaged timbers that had been left behind. CCCA’s design team also found an opportunity to reuse extracted rock, crushing it into gravel for backfi lling. The design is a literal and fi gurative reworking of the site’s past, but also a symbol of the city’s future.

The Summit Family YMCA relocated from a smaller leased space within a medical offi ce center to a new 60,500-SF LEED Gold Certifi ed building.

The programmatic elements for this new family YMCA include a natatorium with an eight-lane competitive pool and spectator seating, a large therapy pool, a gymnasium with indoor running track, an aerobics studio, a fi tness training center, child care, youth, and teen centers, a multipurpose community room, administrative offi ces, and men’s, women’s, and family locker rooms. The front of the new facility features a drop-off motor plaza and entry court.

The LEED Gold certifi cation of the building by the USGBC was obtained in part by incorporating sustainable features such as drought-tolerant landscaping, trickle irrigation, and low VOC interior materials and fi nishes. The most noticeable savings is achieved by a graywater reclamation system that fi lters water from showers and pool backwash to be used for irrigation and toilet fl ushing.

Located adjacent to Stegeman Coliseum, the basketball and gymnastics practice facility respects the campus context and responds to the expanding UGA athletic program needs. The facility is a two-story structure that includes practice gymnasiums for both men’s and women’s basketball, a practice gymnasium for gymnastics, a multi-sport strength/conditioning facility, a shared athletic room and associated support spaces.

The building is organized to respect both the precinct context and the operational requirements of Stegeman Coliseum. Truck and service vehicle access is maintained at event level. Also on event level are the gymnastics and strength/conditioning spaces, both with direct horizontal and vertical connections to the Coliseum.

One level above at concourse level, men’s and women’s basketball and an athletic room are strategically positioned with direct access to the Coliseum.

Since 1990, Foley Field has served as the home to the University of Georgia Baseball program. As host to numerous post season events, the stadium is no longer the state-of-the-art facility it once was.

To regain its former glory, the University of Georgia is planning a comprehensive renovation of the team spaces including locker rooms, team meeting spaces, coaches lockers, sports medicine room and indoor practice spaces. Other updates include renovated press box, expanded for concourse, new press level and fi eld-level club seating and lounges.

The exterior of the stadium will be updated with a glass and metal façade that creates a new image for the stadium and relates to the athletic precedent. CCCA is the Architect of Record for this project working in association with Populous, Inc.
