ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION Dear Reader, May is history month in South Australia and we have several local events scheduled, which you will find promoted on the cover and inside this issue. This has been a quiet month from an ABRA perspective with nothing to report. With the looming closure of the McLaren Vale pool to make way for redevelopment, there is a petition circulating to get another established in the area of Aldinga Beach. Although we have ready access to one of the best beaches there are an indoor pool is a necessity for water aerobics, hydro therapy etc. Travelling to Noarlunga on a regular basis for these activities is prohibitive to many users. We are down to 44 pages again this issue, due to loss of some advertisers, but hope you can find items of interest. I hope you enjoy the issue. Kevin Hutton - President & Editor

CAPTAIN ALDINGA Its great to see the Council have put a new bush shelter on the busy Row-ley Road bus stop adjacent the shop-ping centre. What a pity the morons, with no respect for property or community spirit, had to spoil it almost immediately with their mindless graffiti tags.

A nursery school pupil told his teacher he'd found a cat, but it was dead. 'How do you know that the cat was dead?' she asked her pupil. 'Because I pissed in its ear and it didn't move,' answered the child innocently. 'You did WHAT?' the teacher exclaimed in surprise. 'You know,' explained the boy, 'I leaned over and went 'Pssst' and it didn't move' A small boy is sent to bed by his father. Five minutes later.....'Da-ad....' 'What?' 'I'm thirsty. Can you bring a drink of water?' 'No, You had your chance. Lights out.' Five minutes later: 'Da-aaaad.....' 'WHAT?' 'I'm THIRSTY. Can I have a drink of water??' 'I told you NO! If you ask again, I'll have to smack you!!' Five minutes later......'Daaaa-aaaad.....' 'WHAT!' 'When you come in to smack me, can you bring a drink of water?'

    MICK

Out of occult and into the light Micks earliest memories of his childhood in New Zealand were of fear, terror and nightmares. His mother was an avid occult follower. Growing up he gravitated to street gangs if fear was going to be his companion he might as well share it and when they moved to Adelaide he joined ranks with the skin heads and punk rockers. Constant partying, heavy drugs and almost non-stop drinking, mixed with sances and Ouija boards, resulted in physical demonic attacks, a crushing fear, sense of loneliness, helplessness and acute depression. He remembered the kindness of a local pastor, Don Drayson, from Christies Beach Baptists, who once said, Mick [very inebriated], where have you been, weve missed you and we love you. This broke him the opposite of what he felt he deserved and he wept. With the help of the love of his life, Julie (a white witch at the time), a series of deliverance sessions at the church and a genuine experience of Christ, Mick gradually broke through. He changed his ways, lost his addictions and now attends Southern Life Church in 280 Beach Rd., Hackham (Psr. Don); where he gets to preach and demonstrate - Gods observable power to release others.

STARS Black Tie Dinner Saturday 21 June The Willunga175 committee is not resting on its laurels. Following on from the Discover Willunga Fair on 4 May, the next big event planned to continue Willungas 175th anniversary celebrations is the STARS (Southern Theatre and Arts Supporters) black tie dinner, which will be held in the Festival Stadium at the Willunga Recreational Park, on Saturday 21 June. This event is yet another way of highlighting the range and quality of what is available in Willunga. Our high profile chef for the evening will be Todd Steele, (www.chefsteele.net.au) who lives in Willunga with his family. He will present a menu featuring fresh local produce, complemented by several local wines. To make the evening perfect, STARS has chosen three local groups to entertain guests as they enjoy the meal and the friendly atmosphere. So residents and their friends are invited to put their glad rags on and come to the Festival Stadium to enjoy a sophisticated and memorable event. For information about ticket prices and when they can be purchased, please go to the Events page/STARS on the Willunga175 website www.willunga.com/175. There is a full calendar of events on the Willunga175 website at www.willunga.com/175. People can also Like Us on Facebook www.facebook.com/Willunga175 A little boy got on the bus, sat next to a man reading a book, and noticed he had his collar on backwards .. The little boy asked why he wore his collar backwards . The man, who was a priest, said, " I am a Father . ." The little boy replied, "My Daddy doesn't wear his collar like that." The priest looked up from his book and answered, "I am the Father of many". The boy said, "My Dad has 4 boys, 4 girls and two grandchildren and he doesn't wear his collar that way!" The priest, getting impatient, said . "I am the Father of hundreds", and went back to reading his book. The little boy sat quietly thinking for a while, then leaned over and said, "Maybe you should wear a condom, and put your pants on backwards instead of your collar."

    Manure...An interesting fact.

Manure: In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything had to be transported by ship and it was also before the invention of commercial fertilizers, so large shipments of manure were quite common. It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, not only did it become heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by product is methane gas of course.. As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did) happen. Methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOM! Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined just what was happening After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the instruction ' Stow high in transit ' on them, which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and start the production of methane. Thus evolved the term ' S.H.I.T ' , (Stow High In Transit) which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day. You probably did not know the true history of this word. Neither did I. I had always thought it was a golf term!!!!

    Learn how to protect

    your local environment

South Australia was once a biodiversity paradise featuring more than 3500 native plant species, 140 mammal species and 460 bird species. Due to broadscale native vegetation clearance, up to 98 per cent of our native bushland has been lost in some areas and with it, many plant, animal and bird species. Trees For Lifes Bush For Life Program gives people from all walks of life the opportunity to help preserve what little we have left by learning how to restore and protect our States native vegetation through bush regeneration workshops. At the workshop, participants will learn: x why the bush needs your help; x the best strategies for restoring ecological processes; x minimal disturbance techniques; x how to work safely in the bush; how you can get involved as a Bush For Life volunteer Continuous learning opportunities are also provided through the program, ensuring participants discover the best techniques to get native plants regenerating and how to defeat invasive weeds. Bush For Life also holds advanced workshops which cover topics such as native plant and grass identification, advanced bush management techniques, brushcutting and more. Volunteers also choose how they want to be involved in the longer term. They can participate in small group activities every now and then, adopt a bushland site of their own or join our Bush Action Team. If you want to find out more about getting hands-on experience through Bush For Life, phone the office on 8406 0500. Aldinga Beach CFS CADETS

Aldinga Beach C.F.S has a Cadet program that has been running for the last 17 years. Cadets range in ages from 11 to 18. We currently have a mix of both boys and girls aged 11 to 15. Aldinga beach Cadets train to be future fire fighters on a Thursday night, during the school term having a break during the school holidays. Cadet training is run by Aldinga Beach C.F.S brigade members. Cadets wear protective overalls, helmets, gloves and boots. Cadets receive training on using hoses, radios for communication, reading maps, bush fire fighting, structural fire fighting, using a standpipe to fill truck with water, ladders, team building, building fire breaks using a rakehoe, stabilizing a vehicle involved in an accident, using a back board to lift a person. We also show Cadets through road crash rescue Cadets are shown all the tools and how they are used by our rescue crew. Aldinga Beach Cadets have given a few thoughts about their cadet experience and what they enjoy about Cadets -Using Radios and going on fire trucks -Search and Rescue -Team building activities like hose soccer -Learning new skills -Going on Brigade camps -Using fire trucks for drive bys (training for fire fighting from back of a moving fire truck for grassfires) -Friendship and Teamwork -Unique experiences -RCR (road crash rescue) -Climbing on the roof of the station during ladder training -Using a rakehoe to make a mineral earth fire break -From one of our Cadet supervisors it is always a great feeling to watch cadets grow and learn, to be part of a team and to give to the community . As you can tell from the com-ments above Aldinga Beach Cadets experience quite a lot during their time as a Cadet and at age 18 can move up to be a responding fire fighter after further training. Aldinga Beach C.F.S has had many Cadets remain on well after being a Cadet to become long serving members and hold positions such as Captain and lieutenants. Tanya Steele

Fluorescent light tubes (this includes Compact Fluorescent lights now widely being used to replace incandescent globes) contain mercury. If disposed of in landfill (through your garbage bin) this can leach into the soil and water table with disastrous results. They should be disposed of properly through recycling. Do not put them in your rubbish bin. Collection points are available at Mitre 10 stores and the Willunga Environment Centre.

Green waste and cardboard / paper - Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) legislation bans all councils state wide from sending these materials to landfill. As of 1 September 2012 computers and televisions will also be part of this ban. Therefore these materials can no longer be accepted as part of our hard waste collection. The collection point is the Southern Waste Resource Management on Bakewell Road Seaford Rise (the Council dump off South Road N of the bridge). There is no cost. All you need to do is take your Ewaste to the appropriate tip and they will direct you to the Ewaste section. You leave your stuff near two containers and exit the tip depositing the card they issue you with. This card will take you off their computer.

This can be done any day of the week.

Talking Health with Kelly Harding ND

Vitamin D, Vitamin Sunshine Why Is Something So Simple, So Hard to Get? When we think of Australia, we think of surf, sun and sand, beautiful climates and the great outdoors. With vitamin D readily available from the sun, why are so many people deficient? An estimated 73% of adults suffer from inadequate vitamin D levels. Are we spending too much more time indoors? Are we obsessed with the need to use sunscreen? With so many factors influencing vitamin D, can you do be sure you have adequate vitamin D levels?

Delving Into Vitamin D Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin derived from UVB waves from the sun. Dietary sources are limited and include oily fish and egg yolks. Vitamin D is well known for its role in maintaining the health of bones and improving calcium ab-sorption; but D is so much more than this! It also helps im-prove immunity. Vitamin D also improves muscle strength and can reduce fractures in the elderly. Did you realise that low levels of vitamin D have also been associated with an increased risk of certain cancers and other chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes?

D Deficiency Is Widespread It may be quite alarming to find out that so many of your family, friends and others in your community may be suffer-ing from a vitamin D deficiency. With our main source of vitamin D coming from sunlight, keep an eye out for those you know who may be at greater risk of deficiency. They include people who are older, housebound, darker skinned individuals, and those who wear covered clothes, work in-door s o r r egu la r l y a vo i d s un ex pos ur e. During the colder months, you may need to spend more time outdoors to obtain vitamin D; compared to summertime, when several minutes of sun exposure daily may be suffi-cient.

Recommendations for Achieving Optimal D Levels In order to achieve and maintain optimal vitamin D levels, here are a few simple steps:

x If getting sun exposure, aim for 6 to 7 minutes mid-morning or mid-afternoon during warmer months, and 7 to 40 minutes at noon during winter; arms and shoul-ders should be visible, and without sunscreen.

x If you know you are low in vitamin D and you wish to avoid the sun, it may be more appropriate to correct a deficiency with a supplement to quickly and safely build up your vitamin D stores.

Put D Back in Your Day Vitamin D is critical for the health of your entire body. With so many people deficient in this vitamin, it is important to get your levels assessed to ensure they are not low. Vitamin D deficiencies can have negative effects on your health and may increase your risk of chronic disease.

    GLOBAL WARMING IS NOT NEW.

The Arctic Ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot, according to a report to the Commerce Department yesterday from Consulafft, at Bergen, Norway. Reports from fishermen, seal hunters, and explorers all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone. Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met as far north as 81 degrees 29 minutes. Soundings to a depth of 3,100 meters showed the gulf stream still very warm. Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared. Very few seals and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals of herring and smelts which have never before ventured so far north, are being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds. Within a few years it is predicted that due to the ice melt the sea will rise and make most coastal cities uninhabitable. I apologize, I neglected to mention that this report was from November 2, 1922, as reported by the AP and published in The Washington Post - 90+ years ago

(This article is a repeat of last Mays entry - Ed.)

    Senior Health Month

For many people, the years creep by and our pets have aged before we realise it. This ageing process is important to be aware of, because many diseases occur or become more common in older pets. Pets older than 7 years are generally classed as seniors, and extra care must be paid to detect potentially life-threatening diseases early. For every one human year dogs age 7 years, and cats 5 years meaning that a 7-year-old dog is equivalent to a 50-year-old person the age most of us begin to have more frequent health checks!

Why is senior health important? Many diseases in older dogs and cats will progress rapidly because of the faster ageing process. This means that a 12-monthly health check may not be frequent enough for the early identification of disease conditions. Many diseases can be present without initially causing overt illness to the animal recognition of these conditions before they do cause more serious health concerns is vital. The best way to accomplish this is regular health examinations; and for the older pet we recommend this happen every 6 months. Common diseases we see in the older pet are: arthritis; dementia; dental, heart, kidney and liver disease; among many others.

What do regular health checks involve? Senior dogs and cats are advised to have a thorough physical examination every 6 months. A urine exam is also recommended at each 6 month check, as this can help detect some diseases. Every 12 months blood testing is recommended to assess internal organ function (eg kidneys, liver, endocrine diseases) for early diagnosis, discussion, and treatment of any conditions present. This will lead to improved prognosis for the long-term outcome, and a better quality of life for your ageing pets. How do we get started? When booking your pet in for a senior health check, a standard consult will usually apply. If your pet has multiple issues that must be addressed, a long consultation may be recommended to give adequate time to address these.

This includes a scholarship system, art exhibitions, and support for incredible events like the Da Ponte Mozart Project where State Opera Stars will perform popular Mozart arias on May 24th at the McLaren Vale Institute. The year 2014 started with beautiful folk belly dancing by local dancer Cathy Phillips. It was a performance which launched Curtain Up, when the audience was also entranced with the exquisite string music of Eva and Minas Berberyan. The indefatigable magician , Wayne Anthony, then mesmerised with his turkey magic. As always, the bar was available and wonderful food. Oh, there is so much to look forward to w i t h S T A R S a t W a v e r l e y Homestead! Lucyna with her Igora Designs, The Year Of The Unsettled Sun. Her pieces are for exhibition and sale on the 5th April, to be launched by Mark Lloyd at 5.30. Later, on May 15th, there is the Cancer Morning Tea which has become a traditional event at STARS . A full years calendar of events is available from STARS.

It is interesting to note that the Noah being saved by God from the flood story, that appears in the Judeo / Christian / Muslim scripts, is reflective of previous similar accounts found in Babylonian / Assyrian accounts that pre date them. This in turn reflects a similar account in ancient Hindu scriptures which predates the Babylonian account.
